Excellent X-Men site X-Fan recently had a chance to talk to Steve Gordan, character designer on X-Men: Evolution, about th eupcoming appearance of Nick Fury in the episode "Operation: Rebirth". Here's an excerpt:
"Nick Fury was an interesting character to design," Gordon told X-Fan. "I knew there wasn't going to be a lot of screen time with him so I wanted the audience to recognize in an instant what type of man he was (even if they weren't familiar with the character from the comics). I tried to get across that he was a tough old nut and had seen plenty of action in his day - and a guy you wouldn't mind having some drinks with in a bar, but I also wanted to get across that he was an authority figure and could command others with just a glare of his eye."
"Boyd [Kirkland, X-Men: Evolution producer] and I discussed costuming for him and decided to avoid the skintight 'super hero' look, so for awhile I played around with just a nice suit (kind of the director of the CIA look), but it just didn't seem right for Fury's character. So we decided to go for more of a para-military look, which we could use as a sort of uniform for S.H.I.E.L.D. when necessary."
