DC restart?

I just finished reading "crisis on infinite earths" and boy, what a read! I thought about how post-Crisis incarnations of heroes are all that many of know about the heroes... would you keep on reading DC titles if they totally rewrote the continuity again?

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I'd even read them if they wiped out the effects of the Crisis, and went back to parallel worlds.

I would. Good stories are more important to me than continuity. That doesn't mean I want continuity to go out the window, but if a new writer on an old book forgets something minor that happened back in 1988, I am not gonna throw a fit over it and go on a letter writing campaign.

Actually, the Crisis accomplished a lot, but DC has already given quite a bit of it back. Take Superman. Since the Crisis, he has:
:yakko: Lost his cousin, Kara (Supergirl)
:wakko: had a complete reboot from John Byrne where he (supposedly) lost some of his powers but got his parents back.
:dot: Let Lois Lane in on his secret identity.
:bosko: And gotten Supergirl, Superboy and Krypto back.
Still no Streaky, though... :(

The Crisis was, in my opinion, one of the best things DC did. On a continuity basis (not to mention story-basis), Pre-Crisis is awful. They are wonderful, classic stories, but I'm really glad Superman isn't still invincible, and Kryptonite can't be picked up off the shelf at the local drug store.

I think that would be an improvement, actually. Crisis was a mistake. It failed in its central goal: to make DC's continuity more, um, continuous. And look at how much of the alleged "silliness" of Silver Age DC is back: Krypto, the Bat Family, the Super Family, etc. I'd be happy if it turned out that the end result of Crsis was that the multiverse was, in fact, restored, but, as a side effect, this new, messed-up DC Universe was created as well.

Pre-Crisis we had the Wolfman/Perez New Teen Titans and Roy Thomas' Infinity Inc. and All-Star Squadron. And a new, more serious tone was already taking hold (Crisis or no) in the wake of Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen. The Crisis destroyed Roy Thomas' work and ruined Wonder Girl and the Legion of Super Heroes.

There were good DC titles before the Crisis. I cut my comic book teeth on Marv Wolfman's "Lord Satanis and His Ex Split Superman in Two" stories in Action back in the very early 80s. Actually, the story was a lot better than that description, trust me. The thing is, all of these alternate universes were getting ridiculous. Off the top of my pointy little head, I can think of Earths 1 (regular DC), 2 (classic DC), 3(evil DC), X (?) and C (Captain Carrot's DC, which I'll still defend to my dying breath)
Point is, all of this was done to satisfy Mr. Fanboy's obsessions with continuity and how stories related to one another. Today, DC has pretty much surrendered the issue, and everything they publish is either "in" the DCU or it's "out". IMO, that makes a lot more sense, in that we can bring back anybody we want, anyway we want, and Mr. F can just back da funk up.
Thus, we can still have our JSA (excellent reboot on Hawkman, BTW) and our JLA, too!
And don't blame the LSH mess on Crisis. LSH was a mess LONG before Crisis, and until a Legion Czar is appointed "Keeper of the Flight Ring" at DC, it always will be. :)

I wasn't at all saying that Pre-Crisis sucked. It was awesome, and there are a lotta really cool stories. I'm just glad they put all that behind them.

No, 2 was filled with the original DC heroes, or at least the versions who starred in the "Golden Age" books from the 30s, 40s and early 50s. Earth-3 was pure evil, with Lex Luthor as the sole hero, and Earth-prime was our real world.
And Earth-prime bit the dust in Crisis, too.
Kinda nice seeing Jim Shooter caught up in that anti-matter wall. :D

I don't know. I think someone like myself, who's wanted to get into comics but was afraid of being left in the dark because of continuity, would like it if the universe "restarted." It would be a way to get new readers. I wouldn't want to alienate older readers who've followed these characters for decades though.

Hey, I love reading pre-crisis and post-crisis, so I don't care. Alternate worlds make great stories, so if Crisis never happened, I'd be fine!
