View Full Version : I hate to ask, but...(One Piece dub related)

Could somebody sum up exactly what's so bad about the One Piece dub? I notice everybody here hates it, just wondering why. Aside from the voices (though I'm not sure how the originals sound) and the censorship. What else was changed?

30+ episodes have either been cut or merged together, including two major arcs along with several mini-arcs. They are Apis Arc, which is a generally hated filler arc between when the crew leaves Rogue/Logue Town and when they enter the Grand Line; and Little Garden Arc, a well-liked canon arc between when the crew leaves Misty/Whiskey Peak and when they arrive at Drum Island (that last one is going to bite 4Kids in the foot, because the villain later returns in the Alabasta Arc, and characters related to the characters in it have recently appeared in the manga). That, and they hate the voices.

The last OP episode aired, episode 58, was actually episode 90 in the Japanese run.

That about sums it up, really.

And this was all done in the name of introducing Chopper as early as possible.

The edits are poorly handled, the voices do stink, and to top it all off, a lot of dramatic tension is removed by 4Kids.

32 episodes removed.

Entire story arcs gone.

One of the greatest characters, Usopp, was completely destroyed in the dub via 4Kids removing all his character development.

Bad scripts
Bad voice direction
Name changes
Name mispronunciations
Music changed

The list goes on and on

4kids made promises but they broke them and now fans of the original can't help but feel like they've just been flipped off.

Well, 4Kids' started on a REALLY bad foot when they said in a press release "One Piece will only have the necessary cuts and edits," then proceeded to cut just about everything they could get away with, starting with replacing their serviceable version of the original intro with their own rap intro, and the fairly good Japanese soundtrack with one of their usual lackluster bits.

Then we moved into the usual 4Kids junk script, with unecessary jokes, almost all silences (dramatic or otherwise) removed, many deaths removed (yes, REMOVED)...

... And then we get to the gun edits. STOP! HAMMER TIME!

This is all above and beyond ~30 episodes being cut from the original Japanese airing.

And more, uncut versions of the episodes have not been released yet. I don't think they've even been officially announced. I'm sure 4Kids has gone back to saying "We'll look into it," or perhaps "It just isn't profitable."

At least it's off 4Kids TV. Hopefully it's gone for good.

Wait, I knew about Zoro changing to Zolo, but has their been more? (In the manga, I mean.)

The manga also used Coco Village instead of Cocoyashi Village.

The manga has also started referring to the Marines as "navy" but doens't change any of the pictures that oppenly contradict that. IE "Marines" is plasterd, in english, all over everything that is Marines related.

I could be wrong, but I think Viz was using Navy long before 4Kids used it on TV. 4Kids just went the extra step of changing all the Marine graphics to Navy.

Yeah, they've always said Navy in Viz's version, annoyingly enough. Its not one of those big deals like 'Zolo' though.

Viz actually interchanges Marines and Navy sometimes......which is really weird.... but very Viz.

Chances are Smoker won't be changed.

I mean they don't go by the dubs EVERY move, Mermen is changed back to Fishmen in Viz.

But most people like the original alot better. Well, in this day and age when uncut releases are pretty much a given (as in, more anime is released uncut than cut), it's kind of hard to like any cut-only release, let alone one this bad.

Thirty episodes? There isn't any excusing that.

You're allowed to like it, and you don't have to justify your feelings to anyone.

But, I personally feel fans should demand better than this.

Well, Japanese One Piece is actually a good show.

At first, I went through the series without seeing one of the Japanese episodes. After the Arlong Arc, I had the opportunity to see it in the original version, and it was amazing how different the two were. Sure, people always mentioned how butchered the English version was, but now I could compare and actually feel why they were so angry. You would have to see the original to understand why the dub is treated so badly.

You can in Soul Calibur 3 also. I've already made a Zoro and a passable Sanji. and I've seen a decent Luffy and ...interestng Usopp online.
