I got a call from EB today about the X-Box 360 I reserved awhile back

Apparently they arn't even getting enough to fill the reserve orders and I may(not rock solid definate) be able to pick up my reserved X-Box in the next shipment

the guy then went on to tell me or the 3rd shipment, or the 4th shiopment, but I should have it at the end of the year, or January.

sorry to hear your pain, art. hopefully somebody at microsoft does pay for thisI mean honestly, this is a big caliburr item, and Microsoft is a large large large company with alot of revenue, I mean wouldn't they think to pour all resources in to meet and sustain demand. However EB does allow for full refunds on reserves, so if I do find one at another retailer I could get my cash back.

Good thing I didn't reserve any games for the system, or I woulda had the games before hand and nothing to play them on.

Not to be too surprising, unfortunately. I'm a Gamestop manager, and our store got about 150 reserves for it. We are only getting the first 10 reserve systems on release night. From there, they told us that we should get weekly shipments that will hopefully cover the reserves by new years (though it isn't guaranteed).

Microsoft has really botched this one. I can't believe they're being this bad about it. This only further aids in damaging their relationship with the consumer. Most of our customers who are getting hosed in this have said they will probably just wait for the PS3 or Revolution (or both).

And it isn't just Gamestop. Every retailer is rumored to be only getting 10-20 systems total.

Way to diss our state. Anyhoo, friends that I have working in Best Buy said that their store received 40 or so, while a friend of mine at Toys R Us said they got 25. Taking into account the number of game stores I have in my vicinity - I'd say there's about 300 avilable in my area, just probably have to camp out for it.

I work at Gamestop and my store has about 80 pre-orders and we are only going to fill a total of 10 of those pre-orders on launch day. I am not one of those 10 people, so I am taking all, but $50 off my system and we are going to camp out somewhere and get our 360's. If we somehow can't get them we won't lose our pre-orders at Gamestop.

While I find the enthusiasm of the people on this thread to be admirable, I have to ask: Why is it SO important to get the system on launch day?

I'm not trying to put anyone down who wants to camp out, so only nice replies please. :p

In all seriousness though, I think a lot of it is bragging rights/status. Let's face it, if you're one of the first to get a 360 in your dorm, you're going to be one popular room. :)

To be honest one has to wonder if all those give away promotions such as "everytenminutes.com" have anything to do with the Shortage. How far back did you reserve?

I've been waiting four years to play Kameo & five years to play Perfect Dark Zero, I'm not going to wait any longer. Besides, I would have all the Thanksgiving break to enjoy the system.

Well, good luck to all the campers. Let's hope most of the inevitable disappointed people on launch day are people that aren't on this board. :anime:

I've officially enlisted myself as a campee. I'm not even sure I'm gonna keep the system if I get it, but might sell it. No matter how much profit I make on top of it, the waiting period will still be worth it. Ideally, I'd like to double my money. During the Ps2 launch, myself and a few friends were able to do so. Hopefully there's a severe need/buzz around the 360, otherwise I'll just keep it.

Doesn't this just further add to the rumor that Microsoft is doing this on purpose...? I thought the whole idea of pre-ordering was so that the company could produce as many units as possible before the release, not the two months after. Knowing this thing would be in high demand, someone messed up. Either Gamestop for taking in 100 pre-orders knowing there would be a shortage, or Microsoft for not telling them that they were only getting 10 units.

Oh, and to an extent MS is rigging some of this. According to Gamespot, some retailers have been told to put up giant "SOLD OUT" signs in order to spread the "so hot that it can't be found" rumor.

According to Gamestop they are to blame for the pre-order problems since they pre-ordered to many, but we only have 80 pre-orders at my store and I think that is a good ammount that should be filled through after a few shipments, but the way it looks now it could take up to 12 shipments or more in order to fill the pre-orders for 80 units. Alot of people won't have a 360 until around Christmas. I don't want to be one of those people so I will be taking my money and going camping with it in hopes of getting a 360 on launch day.

So I have the new hardware to play around with when it's all fresh-like, I've had the reserve for awhile and usualy priority is expected.

M$ as usual going about this in the right direction.....for them. By not releasing enouph systems to meet the demand, they stir up more buzz about it, and a lot more people would want to get it. See, a lot of people want items that they simply can't get or can't get easily. If they release the reqired demand, than the buzz would die down, the media will stop reporting the shortage and people will be Quietly playing their games. The more M$ is in the news, the more money they make. But thats Micro$oft for you. What can you do.

Eh, this really isn't anything new as far as console launches go. I'm glad I'm waiting 'til Spring or a price drop until I pick one up. Save me some headache and some cash.

Penny Arcade's actually been talking about this lately, too - supposedly if you went for the bundle packs or order extra accessories with your console, you got placed higher on the reserve list. Which, considering how much more the store will make on accessory/game purchases than a brand new system, isn't too surprising.

Don't all systems launch with "unexpectedly high demand"? Shouldn't they just, I dunno, expect high demand and plan accordingly?

Since this is a re-occurring problem I am beginning to see why people beleive this is a constructed problem.

As though it's important news to anyone aside from gamers (who would probably be too busy playing games or standing in line to bother watching the news. :p ). I seem to recall the PS2 getting attention from the media as well.

... or get a component switcher.

Yeah, I've regretted selling every console I've sold, because it's usually just a matter of months before I get nostalgic and want to play something on it again... so, it's definitely a good idea to keep everything, even if you'd like the money towards newer games... 'cause it just ain't worth it.

I fall somewhere in the middle. I still have all of my old systems and games, but I rarely have more than two hooked up to the tv at any given time. The others are in boxes in the closet until the time comes that I feel like playing something on them.
