In today's Comics Continuum report (http://www.***************.com/) they've released the names of the characters who will make up the Justice Guild of America in Legends. They are:

1) Tom Turbine (the Atom/Superman-like character)
2) Black Siren (the Black Canary-like character)
3) Catman (the Wildcat/Batman-like character)
4) Green Guardsman (the Green Lantern-like character)
5) Streak (the Flash-like character)

I think that they sound really neat. "Tom Turbine" sounds quite a lot like Tom Strong (from Alan Moore's ABC Comics line) and it seems like he'd be more of a pulp hero. I like the name "Catman," but I just can't shake the image of the orange-suited guy from Batman's rogues gallery (I wonder if they'll go with that look--it would be kind of cool). I actually think that "Black Siren" sounds a lot cooler than "Black Canary" (and the other two names sound cool too).

Any thoughts to how they might look?

All those names sound cool and I'm sure their look cool as well.

I got the names in an email not 20 minutes ago! I can't wait to see the looks of these characters! I really like the names of these characters. And Black Siren sounds so much better (and so 1940's) than Black Canary!

It'll be interesting to see how they explain the similar powers in Green Guardsman and GL. I was kind of annoyed that I couldn't see the actual JSA, but I am now started to get psyched up over the JGA.

And I agree, they did a great job on the names.

Tom Turbine?

TOM...TURBINE?

Lol. Wow. Okayyyyy.

I would have preferred something like...oh...Power Man (Yes, that one.), umm...God...anything but Tom Turbine. Lol.

As to how they'll look...

No clue on...snicker...Tom Turbine.

Black Siren would get fishnets...and a jacket.

Catman probably looks like Wildcat with a cape...

The Green Guardsman would get an Alan Scott look-alike outfit.

Streak gets a helmet, and wings on his feet.

Tom Turbine?

I'm working on my versions of what these characters would look like. I'll post them in this thread when they're done.

To whet your appetite, here's something I posted in my gallery in the Drawing Board.

Anybody else thinking of the Ray Stevens song, The Streak?

Here he comes,
Boogity-Boogity,
There he goes,
Boogity-Boogity,
And he ain't wearin' no clothes!

Oh yes, they call him the streak
Boogity-Boogity!
Fastest thing on two feet
Boogity-Boogity!
He's just as proud
as he could be of his anatomy
He gonna give us a peak

Oh yes, they call him the streak
Boogity-Boogity!
Likes to show off his physique
Boogity-Boogity!
If there's an audience to be found,
he'll be streakin' here around
Inviting public critique

Hello once again, everyone.
Your action news reporter
on the scene at the gas station.
There seems to have been some
disturbance here.
Pardon me, sir,
did you see what happened?

Yeah, I did.
I was just in here
tryin' to get some air in my tire and
he just appeared out of the traffic.
Come streakin' around the
grease track,
didn't have nothin' on but a smile.
Ethyl's in there gettin' her a cold drink.
I hollered in there.
I said ' DON'T LOOK ETHYL! '
Too late,
she'd done been mooned.
Flashed her right there in
front of the shock absorbers!

He ain't crude,
Boogity-Boogity,
He ain't lewd,
Boogity-Boogity,
He's just in the mood
to run in the nude.

Oh yes, they call him the streak,
Boogity-Boogity!
Likes to turn the other cheek,
Boogity-Boogity!
He's always makin' the news,
wearin' just his tennis shoes,
Guess you could call him unique.

Hello once again, everyone.
Your action news reporter
in the booth, at the gym,
covering the disturbance of the
basketball playoff.
Pardon me, sir,
did you see what happened?
Yeah, I did.
It was halftime,
I was just goin' down there
to get Ethyl a snowcone.
Here he come,
right out of the cheap seats,
right down the middle of the court,
didn't have nothin' on
but his hightop Reeboks.
He was a dribblin'.
Made a jumpshot,
got out through the concession.
I hollered up to Ethyl.
I said, Don't Look Ethyl!
Too late,
she'd done got her free shot.
Grandstanded her,
right there in front of the home team!

Oh yes, they call her the streak!
Whoa! Here he comes again!
Who's that with him? Ethyl?
Is that you Ethyl?
Where do you think you're goin'?
You Get Your Clothes On!
Oh yes, they call him the streak!
Ethyl, you brassin hussie!
Say it isn't so, Ethyl!

I'm kinda disappointed about how they ripped off the JSA/JLA powers. :(

I can't wait for this storyarc. The only problem I have with is that I hope the JGA characters don't look bad in costumes

They're supposed to. These characters are supposed to be homages to the original JSA since they were unallowed to use them.

How come they aren't allowed to use Justice Society of America? That really sucks! If they can't use them, then will we see Black Canary anytime in the future?

When I think of the Brave and Bold Episode I think of the 1970's comics with Green Arrow, Black Canary, Green Lanter, and Batman.

Where did everyone find storylines on upcoming episodes?
I am looking forward to Paradise Lost!!! Love Wonder Woman!

They weren't allowed becuase DC wouldn't have it. DC thoiught the story wasn't doing the team...uh...justice (heh) so they asked Timm and the crew to change it.

Joe Tully

DG posted this in the News a while back, guys. Timm wanted to poke fun at some of the old superhero stereotypes but DC didn't like that because they've done a lot of hard work to make the JSA respectable and it's now one of their top-selling books. So the JGA was the compromise.

There's no need to get ticked off about any "rip-off". Like DG said, they did it on purpose because they couldn't get the rights to the JSA. There's a difference between ripping off and doing an homage to something.

I like the new team and plot for Legends. It almost gives the episode a kind of Alan Moore flavor to it.

And Tom Turbine is a cool sounding name, :p.

James Harvey

I really wanna see how these two teams collide. The JL doesn't really trust each other completely yet, and the old school JSA-like team JGA is one of those "to good to be true" teams. I think this will definatly cause an interesting confrontation.

Also, Berkowitz told me that this episode may not be the time travel episode. In an email he told me "the time travel episode is not the one your thinking about". He said that during a conversation about Legends. I wonder...will this be the time travel episode and if not...how will this be pulled off?

I think it may be pulled off similair to DC's old "Earth 1"/"Earth 2" concepts.

Karkull

Well, if they are going to do the Crime Syndicate, there's no reason that they couldn't give the Justice Guild it's own alternate Earth.

Here are my ideas for the JGA. Keep in mind, tese are cheesier 40s and 50s style costumes.

Yeah, I followed the idea that they were archetypes based on JSA characters. Green Guardsman is supposed to be JL's version of Alan Scott. I also wanted to keep the costumes a little cheesy on their designs so that they would invoke some of the sillier aspects of Golden Age character design (i,e,Ton Turbine's bare legs and Streaks ridiculous bolt on his head. I also tried to keep Turbine smaller than the others since he is a mix of Superman and the GA Atom.

Those pics look really good, and look like great variaitons on the classic costumes. I wonder how close these wil be to the final look.

I like those designs, CarterHall. Like you said, they're a bit cheesy, but they sort of have to be! I'm expecting a moderate amount of corniness to be thrown into the JGA to make them decent Golden Age look-alikes.

The Guard

About Carter's designs:

The T-Man (No...I REFUSE to call him Tom...shudder...)

Umm...no comment. I doubt we'll see the bare legs and Hercules look.

The Streak:

It looks kind of like Quicksilver. I think the JGA Streak will be red and blue, and have some kind of helmet, a la Jay Garrick.

Catman:

Your's isn't bad. Maybe it'll be black and grey or something. And I don't think he'll have a symbol.

Black Siren:

Your looks a lot like The Silhouette from Watchmen. I wouldn't mind seeing that design, since I'm sure we'll eventually see Black Canary, and her fishnets and jacket, so that has to be saved.

The Green Guardsman:

Hmm...not bad. Drop that huge mask, give him a domino one, and lose the stylish boots, and I think that's about what we'll see.

"And Tom Turbine is a cool sounding name"

God help us all...

James Harvey

Maybe the costumes used for the JGA will be wild, overly 1940ish taleon the characters. The female superheroes will wear dresses, for example.

Tom Turbine
The name sounds more like that of a pulp hero more than a super-hero, so I picture him wearing an outfit reminiscent of Tom Strong or Doc Savage (more of an adventurers outfit).

Catman
Sorry...I'm no good...I still picture the orange-suited Catman from Batman (which would actually fit in here, considering that it's a homage to the Silver Age, :p).

Black Siren
I picture a Black Canary costume with a bit of Wonder Woman's design (the sirens are from Greek myth). Perhaps she'll have a bit of Phantom Lady's look too (I don't know, that's the other Golden Age heroine I think of).

Green Guardsman
I don't know, the name makes me think more of a knight-like character. Maybe he'll have a bit of Green Lantern's armor from Kingdom Come in his design (or, at the very least, armor like Captain America's).

Streak
I'm thinking something that looks like Max Mercury...maybe.

Joe Tully
12-29-2001, 03:27 AM
For Streak, I think that the old Flash helmet would be too similar for the bigwigs at DC, but I wouldn't be surprised if they borrowed other elements from the Greek god Mercury from who the helmet idea was taken. Namely, I think that we might see some wings on his boots, kind of like the thunderbolts in CarterHall's design.

And like or hate the name Tom Turbine, you have to admit that it is pure Golden Age.

The Guard
12-29-2001, 01:37 PM
It is very Golden Age. Kind of reminds me of...Adam Strange for one...

I am now. "This is your action news reporter, reporting live from the supermarket. There seems to have been some sort of disturbance here. Pardon me, sir--did you see what happened?" "Hee-yeeeeeeah, I did. I's standin' over there by the tamaters, when here he comes. Past the pole beans. Ethel's standin' over there by the sweet pertaters; I hollered out, 'Don't look, Ethel!' She dropped a whole jar of kumquats and fell back into the sweet midgets. It'as too late--she'd already been incensed."
I do the redneck very well. :D
Wasn't Turbine the name of one of the wrestlers on the crappo Saban show Las Luchadores?

I don't think that they can really animate those. The best we could hope for is grayish legs, :( .

If they can animate Spider-Man's costume's web pattern, they should be able to do fishnets.

Spider-Man got animated really, really badly. The Fox Spider-Man was done by TMS, but it was so expensive they had NO money for reshoots and editing, and so it was crappily put together.

Timm, on the other hand, knows that characters that are more simply drawn are easier to animate. So I'd be genuinely surprised to see fishnets.

James Harvey
01-01-2002, 03:22 PM
The animation in Spider-Man was split between TMS and KOKO, and you can really tell. TMS animated some great episodes, like the beautiful pilot episode, and KOKO did some mediocre animation on episodes like "Enter The Chameleon". I wasn't a big fan on how the series constantly reused the same footage over, over, and over.

As for JL...it's possible they could do the fishnet stockings. They didn't for Zatanna in BTAS so I can't see Siren's stocking happening here.
