As I'm typing this post, CN is broadcasting "Frigid Hare" on the "Bugs & Daffy" show! Somebody goofed...!! Of course, the line regarding Bugs not having to go back to work until July 1953 was edited...

Thanx for the confirmation - man, I thought I was dreaming! What a Christmas present!
And the only edit I noticed was the "1953" line!

I'll have to catch it later (if they play it again). I have an unedited copy on tape already, but I still want to see CN play it (it's fun seeing them "break the rules"). Anyone ever notice the insides of Bugs' ears are sometimes yellow in this cartoon? I guess he took a vacation from hygene as well... :p

I admit, I don't get it. We all know the cartoons were made decades ago. Why did they cut the line about how six-month days mean not having to be back until 1953?

It's a ridiculous cut, but I think it's more of a case of current events that caused Turner to cut the line. I saw that cartoon on TBS some years ago (I think 1996) and that line had already been cut. After all, Frigid Hare was a 1948 copyrighted cartoon that was released Oct. 7 of 1949 (according to Jerry's book).

Because of that line edit, even though it's one of the Censored 11 (or 12), I only consider it a stocking stuffer because of the edited line. It's a REAL present IF the whole thing is shown in its entirety...the way it's supposed to be. I mean, DUH! Can anyone see the copyright date on the opening WB shield?

The origins of that edit go all the way back to the 60s, so It's hardly new (but it has been edited in various ways, I think). I think CN's copy of this cartoon was pre-edited, CN seems to have little problem with admitting how old the cartoons actually are (Toonheads mentions dates all the time). The fact is, people KNOW the cartoons are old. Maybe not how old, but they know. It's really stupid of WB to stop celebrating character birthdays and such for fear some little kid will hate Bugs because he's over 60.

When ABC aired "Frigid Hare" on the original prime-tiime Bugs Bunny Show and later on Saturday mornings, the ending gag wasn't edited. Later, when CBS got control of the rights to the cartoon, it was cut out and then when Nickelodeon was sent the cartoon by WB, the 1953 gag was back in.

CN has gone back to the CBS edit, which going by that logic, means they should never show a certain Clampett Bugs cartoon ever again because all the action obviously takes place in the past, and of course, they will have to take "Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2 Century" out of the regular rotation sometime around the year 2367....

Out of curiosity..when WAS the last time we saw that certain Clampett cartoon in regular rotation? It has appeared on the Bob Clampett Show and on June Bugs, but...when else?

I think the cartoon I think you are thinking of last aired on 11-04-2001.

Actually, IIRC, Warner Bros. is avoiding any more birthday celebrations because they're worried about possible impending copyright expirations. They don't want someone to figure out when something like, for example, "A Wild Hare" would go into the public domain.

This is the same reason there hasn't been any new or revised history books on the studio published. The last one we saw was, what? "Chuck Reducks?" (and I'd hardly call that a studio history as opposed to memoirs)

If you notice, the last character birthday the company acknowledged was Marvin's 50th in 1948...and even then, it wasn't anything special compared to Bugs' in 1990 or even Taz's 40th in 1994. Two videos and a handful of promotional items.

Not even Hanna-Barbera celebrations (Scooby's 30th in 1999 and Flintstones' 40th in 2000) were done, and I'd hardly call those in danger of losing their copyright.

BUT, WB really has nothing to worry about. Copyright laws are being rewritten and revised now as we speak. If things go the way they are supposed to, once an item is copyrighted that will be it. No renewal will be necessary. AND, it will work retroactively as well! Public domain cartoons will become a thing of the past.

Warner Bros. is just waiting to see how this will all turn out. Disney is the first company that will be affected by these hopeful new laws. So until the early Alice and Mickey stuff is officially protected, you probably won't see too many historical specials or references from most of the studios.

You mean films that are already in the public domain will once again become the property of Warner Brothers when this takes effect?

Actually, they should take out the 1980 sequel of the Return of the 24 1/2 Century now...and put it back when they put the part that is missing back in, whatever THAT is!
