Anyone know if the X-Men arcade game(the one that spanned 3 screens or so) was supposed to be a tie-in with this pilot? So much stuff seems to be exactly the same(heroes and villians, art style, setting, etc). Or did these two things just happen to borrow very faithfully from the same comic source?

I've never heard of any official confirmation but the game was too similar to the cartoon for it to simply be a coincidence.

I'd say so. They used the same designs in both of them (I even think Kitty is wearing the same street clothes in both), and in the comics, some characters, like Storm, changed costumes as early as '86.
Both the arcade game, and the 90's animated series were released in '92. Either the game was in development for a long time, ever since Pryde of the X-Men aired, or it was simply pure laziness on Konami's part, and they quickly put it through development to coincide with the series premeire.
