View Full Version : Movies on CN....

The recent controversy over Time-Warner airing live movies on CN and the Ghibli movies on Turner Classics caused this question to cross my mind....
If CN were ever to set up a movie block again, what features (strictly cartoon, for the purposes of this survey) would you like to see? Are there any pictures on the old Cartoon Theater that you're itching to see again?
Maybe back-to-back showings of the most recent Looney Tunes movies "Space Jam" or "Looney Tunes: Back in Action", or some of the 1970s compilations? Real old school like the Fleishers' three Popeye minifeatures and two features "Gulliver's Travels" or "Mr Bugs Comes to Town"? More recent efforts like the UPA's Mr. Magoo's "Arabian Knights" or Judy Garland's "Gay Purr-ee"? English features like "Yellow Submarine" or "Watership Down"? Maybe the NEA-funded "Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe" to cash in the upcoming live-action release? Or likewise the Ralph Bakshi version of "Lord of the Rings" because of the fairly-recent hit LOTR live actioners? Some of those anime theatricals that American International Pictures used to release in the 1960s?
Seems there are enough non-Disney animated features out there to sustain a good movie block, if CN were aggressive and imaginative enough....

I wish they could show "Twice Upon a Time" one more time. It's been so long since I saw it last I hardly remember much of it and as far as I know there's no way to get a copy of this film anymore.

Well I always figured with the Dreamworks pair-up that they'd get...like...Road To El Dorado, Prince of Egypt, Shrek 1, (and later Shrek 2), Chicken Run, SharksTale, and Sinbad (and later the Wallace and Gromit movie).
I don't know why the Wallace and Gromit shorts haven't aired anywhere, though those seem like nice pickings as well.
Lets see here...
If Disney is willing to give up their "Honey I shrunk the Kids" rights, what's to say Treasure Planet isn't a possiblilty considering it's the bastard child of Disney, and they want nothing to do with it.
A couple of Current films are likely contenders down the road, like the before mentioned Wallace and Gromit movie, and even the Corpse bride. Kaena is a bit cerebral...but it'd add a nice touch of diversity (and if you're grasping for straws there, Final Fantasy:TSW is always a posibility considering CN seems awfully chummy with Sony).
Titan AE is sitting somewhere waiting to air, CN got Anastasia which is even older by the same studio...so...I mean it only seems smart ( ) for them to pick that up for Toonami or something. I'm sure there are more that I'm forgetting off the top of my head (probably some that I even own), but those are a few that come to mind in the relm of animation.

Why hasn't The Nightmare Before Christmas aired anywhere yet.
Down here, the Wallace & Gromit shorts have aired on Jetix Channel.
I second the suggestion for 'Kaena'. Yes, it is very cerebral and might be a bit too 'out there' for some, but I found it to be one of the best 'indie' animated movies in recent years. (And it's also notable for being Richard Harris's last performance too) It certainly would work in a Toonami setting IMO. Not to mention the dubbing is surprisingly good. (It was originally a French film, for those curious)
I'd also like to suggested a little-known German movie called 'The Snurks'. (Well, it's called 'Back to Gaya' in Germany and 'Buu, Zino and the Snurks' in England) It's CG, yes, but alot of my friends who have seen it love it, and from what I've seen the English version isn't all that bad. I could see it working on Cartoon Cartoon Fridays IMO.
In regards to Final Fantasy: TSW, I get the impression Square-Enix is treating that like George Lucas does the 'Star Wars Holiday Special'. (I.E.: they'd like to think it never happened) Can't say I blame 'em too...

Address to Gary L Thompson:
Your statements incriminate TimeWarner as if they were involved. Mind you, Turner is completely immersed in and owns both Turner Classic Movies and Cartoon Network. TimeWarner just owns Turner, simple as that. Turner, otherwise, controls all aspects.

CNUK has gone back to airing movies on weekends (Cartoon Theatre... oh joy!) But it's mostly the same regurgitated crap recycling itself on a monthly basis. I'm so damn sick of The BFG! Here's a list of the movies airing in November:
Bratz Starrin' and Stylin'
Tom and Jerry: The Magic Ring
The Toy Warrior
The BFG (AAAAAGH!)
Kong: King of Atlantis
Acceleracers: The Ultimate Race
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
Tom and Jerry: The Movie
I'm very surprised that The BFG wasn't on at least 2 more times during the month, but including the Batman Beyond (not called Batman of the Future) movie airing on CN (it's been aired on Toonami numerous times) shows that Turner UK is some way including.
It is very unlikely that big-name films will go to CNUK. Disney Chanel lives off their films, and gets its highest ratings off of them (even though they get very low ratings anyway). The biggest animated films go to the movie channels - such as Shrek, Spirited Away, and even the Wallace and Gromit shorts went to movie channels when the film came out over here.

You think CN would've aired the Wallace and Gromit shorts again with the movie and all.

If they would bring back a movie block on Cartoon Network, I'd make it weekly dinner hour block: 6 PM EST/PST every Sunday night and a "more mature" movie block every Friday night at Midnight, and this is how I'd program it:
For the Sunday movie:
The Iron Giant (Warner Bros)
Cats Don't Dance (Warner Bros)
The Powerpuff Girls Movie (Warner Bros)
Quest For Camelot (Warner Bros)
The Prince of Egypt (Dreamworks)
Road to El Dorado (Dreamworks)
Shrek (Dreamworks)
Chicken Run (Dreamworks)
Sinbad (Dreamworks)
Ferngully: The Last Rainforest (20th Century Fox)
Anastasia (20th Century Fox)
Ice Age (20th Century Fox)
An American Tail (Universal)
An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (Universal [and THAT'S ALL])
Jetsons: The Movie (Universal)
The Secret of N.I.M.H. (MGM/Sony)
The Nightmare Before Christmas (Disney)
Arabian Nights (Miramax)
James and the Giant Peach (Disney)
Robin Hood (Disney)
The Sword in the Stone (Disney)
Bionicle (Buena Vista)
Bionicle 2 (Buena Vista)
Wallace and Gromit Triple Feature (Aardman)
Star Wars: Clone Wars Vol. 1 and 2
And some of the usual stable of animated movies they air
For the "mature" block:
Kaena: The Prophecy
Titan A.E.
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker
Akira
Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro
Escaflowne
Read or Die
The Animatrix
Waking Life
Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights
Appleseed
Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within
G.I. Joe: The Movie
And the usual Dragon Ball Z movies they air

I'm still waiting for Road to El Dorado. Considering that CN signed a package with Dreamworks a few years back and that they have now aired Antz, Road to El Dorado should be next in line. It may not be Dreamworks Animation's best, but it was a fun movie, and surprisingly "adult" at times, probably more so that even Antz or Shrek.

CN Japan's movie lineup is too random, plus they air a lot of anime movies in Japanese only (of course). CNJ's movie library is, however, larger than probably any other Cartoon Network in the world.
From what I've seen they've aired:
Tobias Totz and his Lion
Babes in Toyland
All the Barbie movies made by Mainframe
The first 8 Land Before Time movies
The ex-Driver movies
Ah My Goddess
Panda Go Panda and it's sequel
Chie the Brat
Gauche the Cellist
Some Anpan-Man movies
Kirikou and the Sorceress (in French and Japanese)
Tom Sayer (MGM's animated movie)
Race for Your Life Charlie Brown
Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown
Gay Pur-ee
Return to Oz
Ego Trip
Globetrotters (the one that aired on Nickelodeon)
Jetsons: the Movie
Titan A.E
Both Cardcaptor movies
Star Wars Clone Wars Vol. 1 and 2
Tamura Shigeru films including Phantasmagoria and Glassy Ocean
and a WHOLE lot of DiC Movie Toons.
just to name a few.

MTV actually showed something good? Personally, I liked "Liquid Television" when it first aired. "Sunday Pants" is essentialy a toned-down clone.

Someone else actually knows about Gay Pur-ee?
ANYway, CN has been doing good (IMO) airing anime movies on AdultSwim. Dispite the censorship, it gives me a chance to see movies I didn't think of to rent yet. Hope it continues. Showing movies like IronGiant and Balto, I saw movies that I liked but didn't expect to. As Disney has the lions share of US animated movies, I never expected to see them cross to CN, probably why the Ghibly movies are on TBS (?).

I would like to see CN make a point of airing animated movies that never got very much theater exposure.
Admittedly, not every limited-distribution movie is of outstanding quality (to be honest, some hardly deserved to be released at all), but I'd be grateful for an opportunity to judge 'em for myself.

I really want CN to air Flight of Dragons and Twice Upon a Time.I believe Twice Upon A Time aired on the old Mr. Spim's Cartoon Theater back in the day. They used to air that, The Hobbit, The Return of the King, and The Phantom Tollbooth a lot back then.
And as much as I liked it (seriously, it's a good African story that blends elements from Tom Thumb with African folklore), I really don't see Cartoon Network US airing Kirikou and the Sorceress. Heck, Starz felt a little squeamish about the family movie, giving it a TV-MA because of the nudity issues.
