NOTES

I hope everybody who has suffered from the hurricanes is alright.
Happy Halloween!
By the way, if you miss this episode somethings wrong. SIX AIRINGS!?
I haven't done the CNF talkbacks by will just to see if people would notice, and you haven't. They haven't been posted at ALL, and there have been little replies when these could easily get two pages or more a week, hopefully this one will. This will stay stickied through halloween as it will be aired to death until then.

Let's Begin!

While I did like the visuals in this episode, and Nazz and Edd trick-or-treating, the rest of the story fell flat. Not that good of a writing job there.

Predictable writing, but the art was just gorgeous, and I saw some incredible-looking monsters (my whole area of expertise/pathetic fandom) - which I never thought I'd say about Ed, Edd and Eddie. The Jimmy alien, Johnny spider and Rolf's freakish mutant pig were just brilliantly gruesome, surreal designs...right up there with some from the Invader Zim halloween spectacular. Loved the opening sequence and musical score as well.

They didn't need to keep showing the same close-ups of Ed's eyes going haywire, but I did laugh aloud at his final hallucination.

I think it's a little ridiculous to say the show is going downhill just because this particular special wasn't that great.

That being said, this was definitely my least favorite of the specials. Parts of it were amusing but it was very predictable in places and I think the ending could of been better.

That was weak. It was poorly written and predictable.

You know what it felt like? The episode of sealab with the Griefer. Each character has something happen to them and they get hurt one by one. And it all leads up to an Inticlimactic ending.

I hope this isn't an indication for the new season.

However, All the Humor from this special came from the visuals. The animation was superb, and the specials are the best animation the show has ever had. The drawings were incredibly off-model, and looked amazing. A far,far cry from Season one.

It was ok, like everyone said it was predictable still the art was cool.

I have to agree with what everyone said: Good animation, yet only decent writing. I think part of the problem resides in the pacing. I kind of liked how it moved along so fast with them running into each kid as they went to spookey town, but on the other hand it didn't leave time for any joke to settle in that long. As a result I chuckeled here or there but forgot exactly what I was chuckling at (I did laugh though at Kevin getting his bike broken by Ed, but only because he deserved it for egging the Eds in the first place). Oh well. At least Ed was defintley the star of this one (Eddy taking the Christmas Special and Edd having the Valentine's Day one) and the animation was incredibley inventve (I still was amazed how I never saw the "hit into door" joke each time it came despite it being used about five times) but it could of been better. At least have more of a climantic ending battle with super crazy Ed vs the other Cul-De-Sac kids or something. I wouldn't call this as a bad omen though for Season 5: All of these specials may have been worked on (at least pre-production phrase) at the same time so I'm sure they'll have a different style planned for the next season. We'll just see which in a week though.

The animation was great. I especially loved it when Ed's eyes were like tv static. :D Though the ending should have been done a little better.

Ugh that was a terrible ending. Why do such a great job and then crap out at the end?

Is it just me or does anyone else feel that Antonucci can't end his half hour episodes of EE&E without making the auidence feel discouraged? There is nothing wrong with the Ed's getting beat up since we're use to it. Yet when other characters don't get their certain punishment or get in the way, we never see any resolution within that. Hugabaloo was the closest half hour special for some sort of resolution, but the majority of the episode was flawed from the start.

Why didn't Ed get beaten up?! That's what ticked me off about the ending he was the one that did the horrible damage to the other characters yet the other Ed's get the beating. That was just unfair, I did not like the ending at all, Ed used to be one of my favorite characters but now this special lowered my opinion of him sorry. I mean come on Double D was trying to help everyone and Eddy didn't do any thing for once yup my least favorite special. It would have been another good one if the ending hadn't been that way but no. Poor Eddy and Double D I hope one happens where Double D and Eddy get away {sigh} I feel sorry for those two. And Double D almost had a shot with Nazz too poor guy. B+ The animation was excellent though, I hope the other episodes will be better than this.

I dunno, perhaps I'm vastly more biased than the rest of you guys, but I'm surprised so many folks had so many negative things to say about the writing. Personally I thought it was well-suited to the characters and to the nature of the holiday. It was neat getting to see things through Ed's eyes for a change - he's always off in his own little world in just about every episode; I thought it was a treat to get to see just what kinds of things go -on- in that world of his. And Eddy and Edd were their usual funny selves - Edd's neatly organised pile of leaves there in the beginning; Eddy's Zombie Elvis costume and Edd's plague costume; Eddy's "What, did I win the lottery?" confusion when Edd tried to explain at the end that the house whose door he was knocking on was his own - there were any number of points in this episode where I laughed out loud. I will say that there might not have been quite as many "quotable" lines as in the typical EEnE episode but there were still a good number, from all the things Ed yelled while in Lothar-mode ("Earth is not your salad bar!" and "Lothar don't need no stinking map!" being among my favourites) to the occasional fun Rolf line ("You have made a mockery of Rolf's fungal festivity!") to the running gag about Edd's costume ("'Spore Boy.' Witty. Very witty.") - again it seemed pretty funny to me.

As for the ending being too abrupt - well, I dunno; from a "logistical" standpoint I would hate to have seen them cut any of Ed's encounters with the other kids just to balance the ending a bit more naturally - and from a purely "plot" based standpoint; well, it was -Ed- driving this plot, after all, and he's not exactly the most balanced of characters, is he? He decides Lothar's done, and Lothar is done - that seemed to fit just fine for his character and darn it, the bit with him sitting down in the easy chair with his robe on had me laughing out loud; I don't know how they could have topped that. Actually my biggest "nitpick" would be something I've not seen anybody comment upon thus far and that's the amount of "slapping around" the characters endured this time around. I know it's a slapstick show and I think that usually works wonderfully, but this time it seemed almost a little forced - there were just -too- many times Eddy or Edd got knocked about; it didn't seem quite necessary and after a while it did get a little old for me - but other than that - well again I just flat out enjoyed this special an awful lot =) Got an A from me, quite easily.

Overall, a B. While the art was really great, I think that they played out the Ed seeing things from horror movies thing a little bit too much. The Valentine's one was better, especially because that one kind of gives a more realistic look at the holiday.

The best scene was Eddy and Edd being pictured as people who are running around in a flower garden. And you have to give them credit for using the Lothar name, despite not having Ed talking towards the camera at the start like in those old SNL sketches.

Definitely a better viewing with music and sound effects. ;)

I know I'm in the minority about the ending, but like a couple others here, I loved it. Edd and Eddy caught in the middle of the chaotic dust cloud fight while Ed calmly sits there reading the paper- it's the ultimate irony, since he started all the trouble. It had me laughing.

Everything has been pretty much sumed up, great poses and animation, boring and predictable writing.

Grade: B-

Although I still love the first two specials better, this was still worth watching, even though the writing could have been better. The visuals/animation was definitely worth watching. The ending could have been better, as well. I give this one a B.

Better than the Valentine's Special, worse than the Christmas special. Probably split halfway in-between, ironically.

I think they did well with Ed's monster-riffic visions, though yeah, when you know he's gonna do one for every character, you kinda get less and less excited for each new one, and it didn't help that the latter imaginations didn't outdo the earlier ones.

A big caveat for me was that this wasn't nearly as freaky as, say, the episode where Ed imagines he's a monster (while covered in Chunky Puffs). That was far scarier than anything in this episode, and I'd say that even if I had the ability to watch both of them back-to-back at this very moment.

A couple moments I did love: Ed trying to stab 'vampiress' Sarah with a steak; Edd having a minute with Nazz. Oh, and did Ed call Kevin's 'character' the Haunted Horseman of Cirrhosis of Liverpool? That one was great!

7 out of 10 for "Boo Haw Haw." I'm looking forward to EEE's new season next week, and hopefully with it the show will go back to the shorter, more whimsical and outlandish plots I'm so used to loving about it.

Great animation. I absolutely loved the surreal world through Ed's eyes. All of the monsters were perfect counterparts to the actual characters. I did feel that the Kanker scene was kind of forced though. If anything, I would rather them not be in the special at all. Overall: A-

Did...did Edd just say, "Good lord!"?I know; I feel a piece of me being ripped away every time I hear that, but he's been saying that for a while now.

Just wondering, has his actor said worse on other shows?

Oh, and I liked the episode okay; I hated the predictable ending, but like others have said, the animation and designs are top-notch.

I really liked the animation for this episode. I actually chuckled at the ironic ending to it.

I'm also glad that it didn't end in "Spook-E-Ville is the trailer park" like I had expected it to.

So uh... when did they start going to school again?

So uh... when did they start going to school again? That would be during the Valentine special, since school general is in session during that time. All the previous episodes had taken place during the summer/winter vacations.

With SIX airings on Friday (and repeats throughout the weekend and tonight 10/31), how can you NOT miss it?

You can have the Snickers, but all the Almond Joys are MINE! MINE! MINE! MINE! (I might let you have a Reese's Pumpkin or two.)

Anyway, the show was an entertaining 30 minutes for the casual E3 viewer.

Those effects for Ed's eyes were quite impressive.

Ed is still watching VHS horror movies? Either this is a "period show," or his folks don't have a DVD player. (P.S. With all the horror movies Ed watches, he'll either be a "Slasher Film" maker...or the editor of a Fangoria type magazine. (Say, do they still print that mag?)

Either this is a "period show," or his folks don't have a DVD player.I've heard somewhere that EE&E takes place in the 1970s as seen from that championship banner in the Valentine special, and I haven't been able to find anything the contradict that assumption.

So, what to say about Boo Haw Haw?
I had read before watching that the writing was weak. This was apparantly it's major flaw. Personally, I wouldn't say it was bad writing, just a "lack-of". It was a story that pretty much wrote itself and I feel a few more plot twists were needed, as well as, of course, a different plot to tag alongside it. For example, in the previous specials you have Eddy learning about the spirit of Christmas the hard way, while at the same time you gain valuable insight into the other characters and see how they celebrate Christmas. Jonny and Rolf being the characters which pull out the laughs. You've also got the Kankers "3 Kings from afar" thing going on there, as well as Ed and Edd attempting to right Eddys wrongs. Hanky Panky Hullabaloo makes up for it's single-streamed plot by showing us Peach Creek Jr. High. Something we never thought we'd see. I also found it gave out quite a few laughs at both the beginning and the end. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for odd couplings? Who knows? It's none of your business.
Apart from seeing what the characters wear for Halloween, there isn't really much that makes Boo Haw Haw "special". I was actually quite surprised that I hardly got any laughs out of it. It seemed to rely heavily on the random nonsense that Ed said from time to time.
Note how I said I hardly got any laughs. That doesn't mean I got none. I did enjoy the animation, a lot. In fact, it could well be one of the best displays of traditional animation I've ever seen. Excluding movies of course. It was just plain awe-inspiring. Everything was so crisp, so detailed, with such fluid movement. It really did make this worth watching. I've currently seen it 4 times and it really was much better to watch on the second run. Isn't it always?
I feel that all that was needed to make this show better was more character involvement. Because let's face it, most of them got a few seconds of screen-time, the majority of which just had them getting beaten up.
In my eyes, Halloween specials should all be visually impressive, since I doubt CN would let any writers do a story which would actually strike fear into the viewers hearts. So what better way to attempt to scare people than with visuals? And when it comes to that area, this special really does take home the gold. It was definately the best out of tonights Halloween specials lineup, but with that said, it was only Scary Godmother 2 and Billy & Mandy's Jacked Up.
So I'll stop rambling now. I thought Boo Haw Haw was above par in comparisson to the normal episodes, but out of all 3 specials to show in the last year, it was my least favourite by quite a bit.

I've heard somewhere that EE&E takes place in the 1970s as seen from that championship banner in the Valentine special, and I haven't been able to find anything the contradict that assumption. But there's not really anything to prove that's true either. It could just be a commemorative banner. But personally, I'd agree with the theory that the show is set in the 70's. Perhaps in future we will see more evidence.

I taped this onto my DVD player's HDD while I was having the Halloween party. Pretty good stuff there.
Artwork = A (Nice!)
Storyline/Script/Plot = B- (It may have holes in places, but it's okay aswell)
Halloween Spirit = A (Sure is high on the good stuff)

The biggest problem though is not in the actual episode, but from the presentation CN UK gave us. Because they started it 2, 3 or 4 minutes too early making me miss the entire opening titles AND both Ed and Eddy's entrances because the DVD player was set to "timer-record" (it started recording from Framegrab No.41 from Los3Eds). Bummer! :(

But for now, I give this special a B+
