View Full Version : Songs that remind you of things, due to circumstances

Songs can be pretty powerful memory-recallers, sometimes. If something is played heavily during a certain time in your life, chances are good that every time you hear the song from then on, you'll remember that time and how you felt.
I'm sure most of you have a better example than this, but it's true for ME: whenever I hear "The Sign" by Ace of Base I can smell sawdust.
What brought THIS phenomenon on was the fact that when the song came out, it used to get played every day on the radio right before I headed to school, and shop class was the first period. I smelled a lot of sawdust while "The Sign" went through my head. So there, there's my story.

Great topic, and what a coincidence. I just recently made an entry in my LiveJournal that was pretty much this same topic. Rather than repost it due to its length, I'll just give a link to it - http://www.livejournal.com/users/michael1978/2005/10/11/ :)

"Happy Together" reminds me of Cross Country, because the team would always sing it during practice. Long story.

"Hear You Me" by Jimmy Eat World always makes me think of my grandmother now because I played it to get some comfort after we found out she had died suddenly a few years ago. Back then it gave comfort and now it only makes me sad.
the thing is i have some cds i just love and listen over and over so i eventually loose the "first" time moment you describe :/
it feels great the thing is when you listen to it so much to remember the time it doesn't work as well anymore :/

"Good By My Master" by Yoko Kanno reminds me of the Pope. Maybe it's because I played it alot before he died.

I can trace alot songs I've heard to a certain circumstance or thing. Here are some of the prominent and/or unique ones:
"Dust In The Wind" by Kansas reminds me of the full moon, night time adventures and Halloween. My friend and I spontaniously sang this song during a cross country candy run to Connecticut during a full moon. :p
"One Headlight" by the Wallflowers reminds me of obessesive fans and MTV. My sister watched MTV and VH1 at all hours to listen to this song during a two week period.
"Fly Like An Eagle" by Seal reminds me of my cousin's "swiftness" and Mario Land 2. Whenever Princess Peach hovered in the game my cousin would try and sing this song. The lyrics were garbled to say the least.
"Forca" by Nelly Furtado reminds me of Portugal. It was the theme of the Euro Cup I saw there in 2004.

Whenever I hear Bruce Springsteen, Creed, Tom Petty, or Stevie Ray Vaughn I always think of cleaning. My mom used to crank any of the above listed artists when she cleaned, and it sucked in the mornings because I'd be woken up by that crap. *shudders*
You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall and Oates makes me think of hospitals because that song is in Wedding Singer, and I saw that movie like 20 times when my mom was in the hospital back in the day.
And I've had many songs and CDs ruined because I was in a suck-ass mood when I listened to it like a junkie. What I do to fix that is listen to the said songs/CDs when I'm super happy, 'cause it balances things out, usually. Some CDs I don't "fix" though, because I need something to use when I want to wallow.

Whenever I hear "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey, I think of serial killers. That song was played in Monster, and whenever I hear it, that's the 1st thing I think of. Then I immediately think of skating in Iowa. Freaky.

I sure hope I've got the gist of this topic, but here goes.
This song, "Suffocate (http://www.lyricstime.com/cold-suffocate-lyrics.html)" by Cold, reminds me of this girl I used to chat with, up until she became so impossible that I just had to ditch her and never look back.

I associate "Walk This Way" by Aerosmith with Beast Boy of the Teen Titans, because I listened to that Toys in the Attic album over and over while I was reading their Perez/Wolfman adventures, specifically the Tales of the Titans one that retold Gar's origin...

Neat topic! And gosh, I could spend all day answering (as could, I'm sure, just about everyone else!) - there are just so many songs that are instant links to very specific memories. This is one of my odder ones, though: every time I hear the old Foo Fighters song, "My Hero," I think of Superman and I feel frustrated. Back in the days when that song had initially come out, I remember driving around town once, trying to find a parking space so I could go deposit some checks at the bank; I'd been playing the radio at the time and the DJ had said that they had a song about heroes coming up right after the commercial break. At the time another song was being played on the radio quite a lot and I absolutely loved it - the Flaming Lips' "Waiting for Superman" - so I stayed tuned to that station all through the commercials. By the time the commercials were over I had STILL not found a parking space - and to add insult to injury, the song they played was that blasted Foo Fighters one and NOT the Flaming Lips one I'd been hoping for ... so ... yeah. Ever since, "My Hero" has left me wanting to grit my teeth and just get all grouchy-like ....
For me I think the question is what does a song remind you of, not are there songs that remind you of things. I can usually recall a specific scene to go with a given song. Riding the bus to O'Hare airport in the rain goes with Rip Slyme. Walking on one of those crisp snow-covered Midwestern winter days reminds me of Suzanne Vega's album Songs in Red and Gray. Driving in zero visibility thunderstorms goes with Kraftwerk's Radioactivity. And so on and so on.

I have this extreme enjoyment flowing through my body whenever I listen to "Holiday" by The Outlaws. That used to always be my favorite song from their Greatest Hits album ever since I was a 4 year old living in Omaha. It reminds me of my old neighborhood in Omaha because my mom used to pop the casette tape in the car and play The Outlaws' 8-track greatest hits album. Even though "Green Grass And High Tides" is The Outlaws' biggest hit song,"Holiday" will always remain my absolute favorite. It's a catchy southern rock tune with an unforgettable chorus.
