Howdy,

Hot on the heels of DC:

Marvel Comics Solicitations for January 2006 (http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=6055)

Quickies:

- X-Statix: Dead Girl #1:

After a brief hiatus caused by their, ahem, deaths, everyone’s favorite mutants are back! And this time, they’re bringing a host of...questions with them. Like why do some heroes and villains keep on dying, only to return from the dead? And why do other heroes and villains bite the bullet, only to remain dead? Who decides on this craziness? Is it some karmic wheel in the sky? Some fickle finger of fate? Or is it just some guy in the marketing department? To coin a phrase: BWAH-HAH-HAH-HAH!!!

- Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four #8 sounds like more fun than a barrel full of teleporting mutated canines. Or maybe it's just that I'm a total sucker for Lockjaw.

- Following up on the Daughters of the Dragon one-shot open for pre-order this month is the new mini by Justin Gray, Jimmi Palmiotti, and Khari Evans. I run hot and cold on these guys, but I really liked Vengeance of the Mummy by Gray a lot more than I thought i would, so maybe I won't even wait for the trade for this.

- C.B. Cebulski comes back to Marvel with New Mangaverse #1. Hmmm...

- Warren Ellis' Nextwave hits stores. On the fence whether this is a wait-for-the-trade or single-issue series.

- From She-Hulk #4:

Also in this issue, discover which old school AVENGER is joining the cast! You won’t see this one coming! Well, unless you look at the cover to SHE-HULK #5 in February’s previews... darn it! >snicker<

- Sable and Fortune sounds like it might be fun, though I've never heard about any of the creators involved.

- Cable/Deadpool #24: at least nobody can accuse them of a lack of truth in advertising...

- Roy Thomas gets the Marvel Visionaries oversized HC treatment. Cool!

- 1602: New World TPB. Also Cool.

- Spider-Man vs. Silver Sable TPB, collecting many books by Tom DeFalco and Peter David. Cool x 3.

- In the Essentials line, we get Essential Godzilla and the oddball Essential Handbook of the Marvel Universe. The latter was the bee's knees back in the day, and I think I still have my set in bags someplace.

- EDIT: One late addition: Astonishing X-Men Saga cover is brilliant.

Sowhatchagonnaget?

Is anyone else dissapointed that the Ultimate Annuals TPBs are tied together, instead of being released in the actual trades? For example, I already own the Ultimate Fantastic Four and Spider-Man annuals as I read those titles monthly, but I read Ultimate X-Men and The Ultimates in trades. Will those of us with similar reading schedules have to track the individual annuals down if we want to read them?

Did I miss something, where is Young Avengers at here?

I haven't been reading in a while, but I do know what not to get (i.e. anything X-related).

What floats my boat for January?

Sable & Fortune. Sounds like a souped-up "Moonlighting", don'tcha think?

Daughters of the Dragon. Anyone wanna bet that either Iron Fist or Luke Cage will show up before this miniseries is done? Looks swank.

As usual I'll just try UFF/X-men, USpidey, and UX-men in store. X-Statix does sound hilarious so I might give that a whirl.
Both an old and new handbook to the Marvel U. They should have started this last year and done the theme ones afterward. Can't decide if I want to get the old one(though it would complete my collection since I have Vol.s' M-Z & Book of the Dead I) or just get the new updated one.
Essential Godzilla Vol.1 I'm definitely getting. I use to read that all the time as a kid.

Marvel has solicited an Essential Godzilla collection. randomguy will repeat this because it's important.

Marvel has solicited an Essential Godzilla collection!

I am officially excited beyond all measure. Being a massive Godzilla fan, as well as an appreciator of Marvel's 70s output, this should be a very fun collection. The Godzilla issues are silly and stupid as all get out, but boy are they fun. It's neat that Marvel managed to print this one despite licensing issues. They must have repurchased the rights to the Godzilla franchise.

If only we could get an Essential Star Wars...

Anyway, moving right along, there isn't a whole heck of a lot to excite me this month. House of M has been an okay story but I'm not interested in following the aftermath at all (mainly because I liked the Morisson approach to mutants, with them being a certifiable ethnic group). That means I'm soundly uninterested in all of the X-Men books.

The exception would be Ultimate X-Men, which features the new creative team of Robert Kirkman and Tom Raney this month. I must confess to being somewhat interested in this pairing, particuarly since this is Kirkman's highest-profile work yet and I'm curious to see how he'll handle it.

Ah, Spider-Girl, where Hawkeye is still alive and the Scarlet Witch is a perfectly sane heroine. Good stuff.

The new X-Statix mini looks like lots of fun, although I'll probably wait for the trade, as I've been accustomed to doing with Marvel minis. The same goes for Ed Brubaker's Books of Doom and Marvel Zombies, which has a neat cover and could be a lot of fun.

New Avengers #15 promises some lineup changes, carrying on the long tradition of the Avengers title not being able to keep a stable team for so much as eight issues. Sounds good, and I'm looking forward to the inevitable "J. Jonah Jameson slams the New Avengers for having Spider-Man on the team" moment, which I'm sure Bendis will have fun with.

She-Hulk solicitation text is amusing, as always, and the thought of an old-school Avenger joining the cast is cool. Any bets on who the mystery Avenger is? Hmm...

Great cover on Astonishing X-Men Saga, although I don't quite get why Marvel feels the need to put out a one-shot compressing that title's first year into 48 pages. Whatever.

Cool collections this month include more Busiek/Perez Avengers (apparently dropping the hardcover format used on the rest of the run), more Essential Avengers, and an Essential Handbook.

Will those of us with similar reading schedules have to track the individual annuals down if we want to read them?Actually, yes, I'm highly annoyed by this choice. The annuals should be packaged in the trades of the regular series, not together.

Did I miss something, where is Young Avengers at here? It's probably running late. Jim Cheung is a bit on the slow side. Similarly, there's no Ultimate Fantastic Four this month.

Been awhile since I did this:
Alright looking month, really nice for my wallet, although that's because so much of my money goes to DC these days, a reverse of times past.

I'll get the three Spider-Man books, because I'm going to go through with this "The Other" crossover.
Spider-Girl is always enjoyable. Not the best book on the market, but a nice read. An issue of dead/gone-insane ex-Avengers sounds good.

Black Panther hasn't caused me to drop it yet, so I'll keep on picking it up.

I'll get Fantastic Four, because JMS has done a great job with the book so far.

Incredible Hulk sounds good, and I've been buying it for a while now.

New Avengers has been excellent, worth the hype and more.

Runaways is a given, of course. One of the best books out there.

I'll check out New Excallibur(characters I like, and I'm giving Claremont one last shot to prove that the guy who made X-Treme X-Men so good hasn't been completely replaced by the writer of Excalibur and Uncanny X-Men.), New X-Men's new team(still pissed about how DeFilippis and Weir got taken off, but the new guys deserve a shot), and X-Factor(3 letters PAD), so assuming the first two issues of each don't blow, I'll be there in January.
