New Lost tonight. I'm seeing Serenity in an hour so the talkback is a little early.

Next Episode:

"Orientation"
Jack, Locke and Kate learn more secrets about the hatch. Meanwhile, after being beaten and taken captive, Sawyer, Michael and Jin wonder if their captors are fellow survivors or the dreaded "Others."

C'mon! Discuss!

You know...you really don't have to put these talkbacks up so early. From when you posted it, there was over six hours left before it aired.

Jumping the talkback a wee bit, aren't we?

So, where's the big huge Airlock go?

EDIT: Well, that's creepy. Does that mean there are more labs on the Island? or other Islands? or nothing at all?

The Psycologist BF Skinner was a bastard (an incredibly smart and accurate one though). If they're following his teachings, that means that they are interested in operant conditioning (invasive mind control through manipulation of the target's environment.)

When the timer runs out there'll be a big confetti drop

Could 'the sickness' be part of this experimentation?

Ah...PROGRESS! Thank you!

Hurley is once again The Dude. All ready to screw everything just to make sure the numbers don't continue their tyranical hold over everyone's psyches. And that look when he stumbled onto the pantry was great, but it didn't top Kate's chocolate whoreing last week.

The Button may possibly be the most important element in the first half of this season. It's already broken Jack, and I wonder how its constant appeasement will affect the survivors that toil over it. (Plus, it would seem that the "Man of Faith" was in fact Desmond, not Locke.)

THE FLASHBACK - Relevant AND informative! Now we have to find out how Jack and Locke both lost their beaus.

INSTANCES OF THE NUMBERS - I'm not even going to bother listing them. They all came from the countdown clock, along with a slew of non-Numbers. I didn't notice anything else, even when doing math on the 6-month anniversary and the 1980 copyright on the old film.

I predict the tail survivors will stop being all tribal and our boys will convince them they're not Others. I also predict Shannon will find, or at least continue her search for Vincent. I'd like to see another Hurley episode. Now that the Numbers have become a huge factor in the story it's time to see some more of his awesomeness.

So we finally get a name for the group behind the island - The Dharma Initiative. I was completely entranced during the orientation tape. It really felt like we were getting some serious revelations. Finally.
They're probably not responsible for all the mysterious happenings on the island, but it's nice to have some real layers pulled back.

I don't usually feel this way, but Jack was a MAJOR a-hole tonight. His stubbornness was more than usual, and just came off as annoying.

(I realized, though, that Matthew Fox would've made a PERFECT live-action Cyclops in the X-Men films...)

Because of this, half the viewers are going to side with Jack; being scientific folk, who see the logic. Where as the other half will be the faith group siding with Locke. The way they set up that particular inter-character relationship is just THAT good...that it even intereacts with the viewers.

Awesome episode, I dare anyone to hate on it (tho I do hope we eventually get back to showing all the characters, Shannon and Claire were nowhere to be found, Walt doesn't count) They found Vincent, Hurley was playing catch with him when Kate came for Sayid. (now we only need a focus ep :D)

In season 1, when Locke was on the phone with "helen" wasn't that like a ...phone sex operator or something? perhaps after falling out with Helen he calls one of these numbers and talks to a woman who sounds like Helen and allows him to call her that and eventually falls in love with the false one(dude...that's sad). or am I jsut mis-remembering (damn, now I wish I hadn't lent my DVDs out)

zmanjz - I've been hearing the same thing. Apparently a radio station played it backwards on the air and you could easily tell that's what was said.

Discloner -
That woman is much older than the big guy. I really doubt they're married. I'm not saying it isn't possible (I'm 12 years younger than my wife), but they look to be at least 25 years apart. I got the feeling she "knew" who her husband wasn't dead because they'd been married for a very long time.

About Helen..

We assumed that she was a phone sex operator because she mentioned the cost of additional minutes. However, if he's calling long distance AUS-US, it could be that she was saying don't waste your money on this long distance call.

Sneaky LOST writers, you. :p

Stoked by the Preview. JIN??

Ana Lucia is totally different than what I expected her to be.

So, this Darma people... there are at least 5 labs (i think the film said 3 of 5), each of them must have a different animal association. They called this one Swan, and a Swan is on all the memorabila.

The electromangetic thing... actually explains alot if you think about it.

Five Stars, easily. LOST never fails to disappoint. :anime:

This is insane.

The island houses a doomsday button, the others speak english, and Sawyer gets his ass kicked by Michelle Rodriguez. Wow.

ManicWebb
10-06-2005, 01:35 AM
The fact that Ana-Lucia and the Tailend Survivors automatically assumed Michael, Sawyer, and Jin were lying implies that they know of the Others. After all, why wouldn't she believe their story if they didn't think there were hostiles on the other side of the island? I wonder if the Tailenders have met the Crazy French Woman.

Well well well. It looks like we finally got some answers as to what's going on with the island. The Dharma folks built the station on the island to study and electromagnetic field. I can only guess there was already something strange about the island before Dharma set up camp; why else would they bother studying it? But then there's that incident that setup the countdown. What could they possibly be preventing? Is it the Sickness that struck Danielle's crew? Remember, Danielle has been on the island for 16 years, and 1989 (when the film was copyrighted) was 16 years ago. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks Danielle knows more about the island than she's letting on. She's been on the island for as long as the Orientation film has been there. You mean to tell me she didn't know about the hatch? Right...

I find it amazing that Jack instantly refused to believe the Orientation film. Of course, I can see why he'd think it was a total farce. Why would the scientists set such a short reset? Why place a Quarantine sign on the inside, except to scare the person inside into staying?

Where the hell is Desmond going, and why wouldn't he simply stay with the 40-something survivors Locke talked about? He's been lonely for years. Then again... maybe Desmond knew there were Others on the island.

Did anyone else notice the part of the film when the guy said something about not using a computer for something?

I saw the preview of next week's episode. Oh. My. God, Becky.

Stupid previews. I'm not watching them anymore. You know why. That would have been a total mind-screw as a revelation next week.

I agree that the tail-enders probably thought Sawyer and Micheal were the Others. I don't know WHAT to think about Jin. I just don't think the tail-enders ARE the Others. (I theorized this last week that Jin may have mistranslated them but now... Well, you know).

Remember last week when I was complaining about how reckless Locke was? This week it was JACK who was unreasonable. The flashbacks were so great because even though they didn't reveal much they helped us understand Locke a heck of a lot better. I'm betting IF Locke was in a car crash and that's what crippled him that Helen died. I'm surmising that the phone-sex operator that Locke was talking to in Walkabout was a fantasy of Locke's that she was still alive. Locke was completely right this week.

I also think that folks in this thread are right by saying DESMOND is the Man of Faith referred to in the season premiere's episode title, not Locke. I'm kind of bummed he left so early but him being here three years tells us something: The government KNOWS about the island. This lends weight to the "this is an expirament on the castaways" theory and as far as I'm concerned puts the final nail in the coffin of the "this is purgatory" theory.

Does anyone have any background information on this B.F. Skinner guy? I think I've heard of him before. I also like the idea that there are more stations on the island. Is it possible that the castaways are NOT the folks being experimented on and it's the people in the hatches? Maybe the Others are experimentees who have outlived their usefulness and have been driven insane? I also agree that considering the timeline Danielle probably knows more than she is willing or able to tell. The "sickness" at this point MIGHT be a hoax.

And yes, even though this raises that question I still think Jack was reckless. Wouldn't it make more sense to input the code first and worry about the mystery of it later? Besides even if it IS a government experiment there are waaaaay too many supernatural happenings on the island to dismiss it out of hand like that. Of course Walt's backward "Don't push the button" as well as him being leery of opening the hatch gives me pause. But Jack doesn't know about that.

This an excellent episode that unlike last week use the flashbacks well. I really enjoyed it and am glad we are seeing that the creators OBVIOUSLY have answers in mind for the questions they have raised. Score: *****.

(I theorized this last week that Jin may have mistranslated them but now... Well, you know). If the tail survivors have met the Others before, they should know how unbelievably strong and relentless they are. How could they believe these wimps are Others? Of course, they still have a bit of reason for locking them away just because they know nothing about them. I just hope Michael and Sawyer are able to convince them next week.

Ah, but that's just what the creators of the video want the viewers to KNOW. It could easilly still be one huge psychological experiment, especially since they mention this Skinner guy. Remember, the video never says why they need to push the button, or what it accomplishes, but Desmond is convinced , due to Kelvin's actions, that it "saves the world" ("his words , not mine" ^__^)

Local radio geek speculates that Kelvin might be Ethan O_o

I think it's safe to say that the "others" were the tailenders. Unless AnaLucia's (who I still can't stand just cuz she's Michelle Rodrigues) story was true and she met up with a pack of varying survivors for random wrecks (Speculation that the big scary black man is or is related to the Nigerian drug smugglers or a Black Rock slave)

Something else comes to mind, Desmond mentions (or at least makes it sound like) Kelvin came rushing on to the shore just shortly after he crashed, and they made it back to the hatch to "push the button". Now, how would "Kelvin" have known there was a boat crash when Desmond wasn't even aware a friggin plane smashed into the island?

I'm just about done with this show. When are they going to stop piling questions on top of riddles, on top of enigmas, and start giving us some answers? Not only that, but they have ruined most of my favorite characters. Locke went from being the edgy guy whose judgement was direct and sound to being the crazy bald guy that you don't want your children around. Jack went from being the voice of reason and the castaways' pro tempore leader to being a slave to The Button (which, I expect, will become this season's polar bear: they'll drag it into the plot when they want to throw everybody off balance, then make it irrelevant the rest of the time). At least Hurley and Sawyer are still keeping me interested, but if they don't stop digging this hole, they'll eventually reach the point where they can't climb out and they'll turn the show into Twin Peaks.

AWESOME! We finally get some answers! So it was a scientific experiment ... last season I thought it might be some kind of government experiment, close enough. I think maybe the button doesn't "save the world" but rather stops a self-destruct sequence on the island... afterall things already look out of hand, I'm sure the creators of the experiment wanted some way to end it if they weren't there.

In some ways I understand Jack's point of view, in others, he's being excessive. When he asked Desmond what he was running away from I shouted at the TV, "A crazy man with a gun! In other words, you!" A better question would have been "What are you running TO?"

Locke is more understandable as a person now, but he still looks too giddy at innapropriate moments.

I don't like where it's headed according to previews though... a big squabble over the food and secrets being kept... I'd rather people leanred to stick together to survive, not fight. I won't even comment on the certain someone speaking how they shouldn't.

And lastly, I still don't like the polar bears. Brought there to be studied by biologists? What kind of nutso biologists were that? They'd study them in Canada, not a tropical island, what use is it studying something that's not at all adapted to the kind of climate you dragged it into? There are other ferocious man-eating animals more appropriate to that kind of climate, tigers, for instance...

Did the hatch/door/whatever that Kate left through also have "Quarantine" written on it? If not, I'd say that having it on the hatch they found is a red herring.

Okay, so the huge pyscho experiment deal was concluded by many people last season and helped by last week's episode. What throws me for a loop is who is in on the experiement. I think that the only ones we can safely say are not in on it are Jack, Locke, and Hurley (mainly because he seems so clueless, but you never know about him either). Oh and Walt's father.

That preview with Jin speaking perfect english made me say "WTF" out loud. So is he in on it as well? It seemed like he didn't know that chick when they were in the hole, but it could have just been he didn't know a new person involved with the project.

It's also how it was said, with the movements and inflections. If it was just a sentence he threw together off the list of words his wife gave him to study, that might explain it. But there was a "knowingness" exhibited in the sentence that makes it seem like second nature and not a second language.

That's sounds a little too well organized to me. I think it's fair to say that none of the 13 main characters on this show are "in on it." It'd just be far too convoluted for, say, Sayid to get on a plane that he knows will crash, and hope he'll survive long enough to aid in a massive experiment. The same even applies to Ana-Lucia. Danielle, Ethan, Desmond, and any number of island-dwelling strangers are fair game, though.

Personally, I think there's something strange and paranormal about the island, and there always has been. Then Dharma started studying the island, they weren't prepared for the unexplainable happenings, and some sort of incident happened that (I believe) caused the unseen Beastie to become somehow machine-like. Even if we're to assume "The Button" is nothing more than a ruse, I think the hatch itself was setup to keep the paranormal things out.

Which begs the question, "Who intentionally snipped out pieces of film and what was snipped out?"It's more likely the old film was just watched so many times parts of it broke (in very convenient places) and it had to be patched back together. Watching it reminded me of this original theater print of Holy Grail I saw last month. It had so many gaps that a lot of good punchlines were lost. I have to hand it to whoever edited that film together. They simulated the look pretty good, and even delayed the audio breaks to mimic how the splice would work on an optical film print.

They mentioned electromagnetic activity, but wouldn't that cause Locke's compass to malfunction? Hasn't Sayid noticed this?

Alright, done. I just figured previews at the end of the episode were fair game, JLU rules.JLU is an exception, not the rule. The previews at the end are an actual part of the episode and the producers craft them SPECIFICALLY not to ruin anything. Like Temple Fugate said, in almost ALL cases networks will go all out to get people to watch the show at any cost even if they ruin for everyone. So, as rules stand JLU previews=okay. Network previews=avoid like the plague.

At the http://www.thehansofoundation.org

they've started making changes, and the Orientation video is available to watch....

It's creepier the more you watch it.

I suppose that is why the Others take children, judging by the film, children make the best test subjects for the parapsychology experiments. And the polar bears. And what caught my eye was the figure they zoomed in on at the end of the film. I can't remember if he was identified but wouldn't it be something if he was the benefactor of the Dharma Initiative and Locke's Father?

Speculation wise, the accident referred to can be one of two things I can come up with right now; Danielle's crew finding the hatch as well and attacking Kelvin or the Others are an offshoot of the Dharma Initiative that went rogue and decided to live the principles of the Initiative in their own way and create their own mini society.

The button, could be nothing. But it seems like a plot device the staff are saving for the mid-season or season finale for a situation in which the numbers aren't executed in time and something really does happen. Hopefully it's cool and leaves us hanging as with the hatch being blown open.

That one doesn't have a Disney/ABC Privacy/disclaimer link. It looks like a fansite created to mess with people.

(ALL of the other LOST sites have had the ABC/Disney disclaimer/privacy policy link.)

Seeing as how Rose will be in the next episode I figured I'd bring this up...

I was reading over at the IMDb message board that if you listen closely to Rose and Shannon (?) talking in the pilot when the monster makes that noise Rose makes a comment about that sound being very familiar. And she's from The Bronx.

Think anyone overlooked that comment or it could be that it just reminds her of the subway?

zmanjz - I've been hearing the same thing. Apparently a radio station played it backwards on the air and you could easily tell that's what was said. Yeah, I mentioned it in a previous Lost thread here.

How many ABC-run Lost sites are there? Just the two? This new one and the Oceanic Flight 851 site?

The difference there is b.t. and co. take care to make the previews as non-spoilery as possible. ABC, FOX, etc, are willing to throw the most shocking thing in their previews just to get people to watch the next episode.

But, it doesn't matter what they put in the previews, because half the time the previews are misleading. saying

Jin spoke perfect English

isn't really a spoiler because it's really only speculation. It's very possible that the line was dubbed just for the preview. It's also possible that the line was from a flashback. Remember in the Sayid flashback how the people in the flashback weren't really speaking English in the context of the story but they spoke in English anyway?

I don't remember anything about that, but it's very likely I've forgotten. Either way, I don't think it has any bearing on this situation. In all the previous flashbacks Jin (and the other people) never spoke in English.

It was the transitional effect they used. I forget exactly how they did it, but Sayid and his friends were speaking in a different language and then mid sentence it switched to English. It's a relatively common effect when you want to let the audience know that a character is speaking in another language but you don't want to use subtitles and have the character speak another language the whole episode.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the two prior Jin/Sun flashback episodes presented with the two speaking Korean and us having to read the subtitles throughout the entire time?

Did they? I watched season 1 on DVD about two weeks before season 2 started and I don't remember that. Anyone know what episode that was in? I'd like to check that out.

That's why this is so weird. It's a safe bet to assume that in Sayid's flashbacks they weren't really speaking English, they just didn't want to subtitle it (or quite possibly couldn't find a dozen or so actors who could speak whatever language they use in Iraq). But they went ahead and subbed the Sun/Jin flashbacks. When the show started we were supposed to think neither of them spoke English though.

With Sayid's flashbacks, you have an actor (Naveen Andrews) who's an English-born Indian playing an Iraqi. So yeah, after a few lines, the show switched to "translation mode," and the rest of his Arabic dialogue was spoken in English.

Daniel Dae Kim and Yoon-jin Kim are South Korean immigrants playing South Koreans. Their flashbacks are always in Korean with English subtitles because, I assume, they can handle speaking Korean for an entire episode. Jin and Sun's dialogue has never been verbally translated like Sayid's.

That's what makes next week's spoiler all the more puzzling.

The DeGroots, aka the creaters of Dharma, as shown in the Orientation film... bear striking resemblences to some kidnappers, do they not? Coincidence, possibly... but coincidence means a LOT on this show.

Judging by the preview clips of this week's episode Those people that caught Jin, Michael and Sawyer are the survivors of the tail end section of the airplane. They probably went savage/ Lord of the Flies due to a lack of a leader like Jack. And I think I heard there were 23 survivors but a whole bunch of them died and they entered some bunker. Perhaps, the sickness or just they don't have survival skills.

I read in my TV Guide and my guess on whose flashbacks we'll see this week are Hurley's

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the whole reason he spent time in a mental institute. Those particular habits are a problem, but that doesn't necessarily make him crazy. It just means he lacks a degree of self-control.
