Yep, the boxart for Sonic Team's latest project has been released. While not only looking cool, it also provides the long-awaited answer as to the game's rating. Here it is:

the E10+ rating was invented for hard to rate (otherwise) games like this. Now if only they could have gotten the Streets of Rage games into Gems Collection and gotten an E10+

I've loved that shot since I saw the ad they used it for recently. :D Looks really good, and certainly grabs your attention.

Yay for good boxart and the E+10 rating!

Man, this must be really pushing the E rating. It's really hard to rate games like this.

It's not quite E, it's E10+, but still I agree that it's boardering on T (in fact, it originally had a T rating according to the ESRB website).

Shadow is probably borderline T.

Cover art looks nice.

Nice boxart.

Though I don't know why they opted for E10+. If One Piece Grand Battle (editted, no less) can get a T, then what's keeping them from giving this game a T? This game looks alot worse by comparison...

boxart looks good.

the only "bad" thing in this game is realistic guns, right? then E10+ is fine. there's no blood, language, or innuendos so T would be over-rating it.

If that Bazooka wasn't in his hand in a failed attempt to make Shadow look "hardcore" that would make for a pretty nifty cover!

Language is a discriptor.

But this proves my theory that the ESRB pretty much tries to keep the same rating across a series. I came up with this theory when Sonic Adventure 2 was rated E, and this just proves it even more (even if it is E10+, it's still got the E in it).

that couldn't be more wrong.

i think the rating systems are pretty bad i mean most of them is cartoon violence, there should be a "Y-7", and "PG" i know people that take the ESRB to heart and would not let their kids play a game with the age it states...

You know, with the E and E-10 rating, is there really a point for the "EC" rating? I think E stands for Everyone for a reason (even if little kids are the only ones who end up playing the game. :))

EC games are not for "everyone" EC are pre-school games.

Does it really even matter what the ESRB gives as a rating? Seriously, it's not even going to make a difference.

Unless you are incredibly self concious and think by buying an E game the demons you created mentaly will start laughing at you.

Obviously the higher the rating, the less restrictions they have with the darkness of the story (& the multiple endings).

They don't have to abide by "E" or whatever...the company makes the gmae, the ESRB deicdes on what catagory it falls. It really doesn't effect anything

Unless you are incredibly self concious and think by buying an E game the demons you created mentaly will start laughing at you. it doesn't matter to me but i know parents that follow the ESRB to the dot, so no matter how safe a rated T game is they won't allow them to play it.

its just like movies, the rating isn't given until it is done. But everyone has heard how they didn't film some stuff or tweaked something so they could get a lower rating. Same thing with games.

and if you live with one of these individuals who are members of these small sects then I shall just point my finger and laugh manicly at you...

The movie developement cycle and the game developement cycle are different. It's like apples and oranges. Beta testing isn't the same as test audiances. And thus the ratings are applied at different stages for each

and if you're expecting Shadow to be some dark brood fest you shall be sorely dissapointed, it's no worse than the first ZOE in terms of violence and massplosions

Parents really don't care about the ratings, only small sects do. I don't know the statstics but i can assure you it is more than a small sect, specially with the huge marketing the ESRB has gotten in the past years.

and if you live with one of these individuals who are members of these small sects then I shall just point my finger and laugh manicly at you... wow, that is really mature of you :rolleyes"
no, my parents always let me play my games regardless of rating and in anycase it doesn't even matter at my age anymore.

I base my opinion on countless of times i've seen parents tell their kids they can't get it because of the rating, now i don't really spend much time in the videogame section at stores, i don't even play games that often but i've heard that many times, for it to have been a "coincidence", so unless you have statistics to prove it your speculation is very wrong.

both try to go for a rating while there are exceptions where they don't care but many they have the game designed on what target audience they want so they don't want to add too much violence to get a higher rating if it is aimed at a lower demographic, it is the same in movies and games.

sonic games are fun light hearted or dark, SA2 is already dark enough i wouldn't expect it to be any "darker".

Rather than understanding violent nature or whatever...

Meh I've seen alot of parents buy their kids M rated games, it may just vary on area to area. Everyone in New Jersey owns some sort of high powered assault weapon, so GTA may just be a reality simulator with soft cuddly bunnies

bad analogy.

They never had to de-bug a movie, the entire process of developement involves different obsticales. Especialy in MMORPGs where developement is always always constant

Excpet part of me wants to see cute and cuddly animals being injured and malciously mis-treated by a character who is essentialy a diet coke villan.

Especialy in MMORPGs where developement is always always constant that is probably rarely done but that doesn't meant they don't take it into consideration while they are programing the game.

and of course i've also seen a lot of kids with GTAs and Halos and other M rated games, i mean most million seller M games i can assure you most kids under 13 own them, that is also why i get annoyed when people use M rated games as showing the demographic that more and more adults play videogames, which is true but they also need to take into account kids buy those games too, i mean i think anyone that owned a PS2 when i was in high school owned a GTA game..

but now that we went totally off topic,

i think the artwork is ok, not bad but could be better.

I'm going to buy this game because it looks laughably bad. It's like Sonic + Guns + "edgy". Which EQUALS DISASTER.

I actually think Sonic Adventure 2 could've gotten a Teen rating.

It had three character deaths (Shadow, Dr. Gerard, and Maria), and in fact one of them was put to death (Dr. Gerard, by firing squad, IIRC, though it wasn't explicitly shown). Plus, the lyrics to Knuckles theme song had "damn" in them.

That rating was introduced early this year. I think Donkey Kong:Jungle Beat was the first one with that rating (could be wrong though).
