View Full Version : A KP rant I found... on Television Without Pity

Television Without Pity has a board dedicated to cartoons, and while browsing around randomly (mostly checking through the Winx and Witch threads), I found this gem on "Hidden Talent" which basically complains, "Why the heck does Kim sing instead of showing off her Kung Fu?":
I saw the talent show episode for the first time yesterday. Was anyone else really annoyed that Kim ended up singing for her talent? All throughout the episode I thought they were doing such a good job of setting it up so that she would use her mission skills for her talent (she even mentioned knowing 16 styles of kung fu, for crying out loud!), and then she ended up...singing a generic pop song. Meh, I was disappointed.
Make of that as you will, but at least she didn't learn her Kung Fu at a secret Japanese school like Ron and doesn't have to keep her heroics silent like Ron. Maybe she would have beaten Bonnie and Ron with it (not literally!)?

Violence in school is always a bad thing maybe. Or maybe they did it to help Christy Carlson Ramone's career.

My guess is the latter.

My guess is the latter.
To paraphrase Ron on Kim's "Cheer camp stinks" comment: "Yeah, that works too." Maybe that also explains why Cree "I released a solo CD in '99" Summer's Susie Carmichael in All Grown Up! frequently finds herself singing (in fact, the next new episode features that as a subplot).
(in fact, the next new episode features that as a subplot)....you know, after a while it kind of goes without saying that any given new episode will feature a subplot that leads to Suzy singing.
Anyhow, I blame Hillary Duff. They had her record a song for the last episode of her show, and she took off for some reason. Therefore, in order to be in a Disney channel series, you must be able to sing, because the more singers they have, the more likely they'll have another Duff.
Duff. I blame her.

Gee, what did they expect? To see Kim kick someone's ass on stage or something? This episode is important, because it shows there is so much more to her than just heroics.

Just dropping by to say that televisionwithoutpity is extremely good for a website. The forums are a little weird though.

A few reason she sang instead of doing kung-fu:
1. The voice actress is a singer. They figured they'd show off her vocal talents in the series. Since Kim won't really have a chance to singer otherwise, why not at a talent show?
2. There wouldn't be much of an episode if she only did what she was good at. If I recall, that Kim Possible episode had Kim's voice in question. It was the overcoming of the obstacle that was the entire plot of the episode!

I think the reason they had her sing was also for the sake of the story. Yes, she can do kung-fu and wow people that way, but for Kim the whole karate thing is a daily thing and not that remarkable.
It's like when she was breaking into Dementor's. She says, "I'm not even sure I have a talent." then totally ninjas into the place. The viewer, I believe, is supposed to be going, "If you don't have a talent, then what the hell was THAT?"
Plus, the whole "high note" thing was needed in order to break the ice for her to escape.
