So folks - a rathar simple question...will Lord of the Rings beat Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone at the box office?

I read an article on EW.com earlier today that said some guy didnt even expect LOTR to reach $200 mil, which I think is ludicrous. I'm not sure if LOTR could beat HP in the 1st week, I'd guess not, but over the long haul I think it can make more $.

Well, since LOTR has at least two wizards that could make that four-eyed little geek their [explentive deleted]... :D

I think it's very unlikely, however I think in retrospect, Lord Of The Rings will be regarded as the far better movie of the two.

I don't know...Harry Potter was really good (and offered a sense of closure instead of a 12 month wait!).

Money wise, maybe not. But I'm sure it will be seen as the better movie though. I guess we'll have to wait and see the results first.

i haven't seen the movie yet but i heard that the movie ends abruptly. the reason for this is that tolkien meant lord of the rings to be one big story. the publishers wanted him to separate the story into 3 books, so that is what he did. and because the movie follows the book, the closure is not there because there is none when a third of the story is told.

I know it's one story--but it's still a really long wait for parts two and three!

I don't know if it will beat Harry Potter, but it may come close. I haven't seen LOTR yet (shoot, it only came out yesterday), but who knows, I may enjoy it even more than I did HP. I love fantasy books and movies to death, so I don't think I won't enjoy it, whether or not it "ends abruptly." I've read all the books, so it's not like I'll be pondering what happens next ;)

Beat? Maybe not, since Potter is a bit more "accessable" than LOTR. But if LOTR doesn't make at least $200 million, there's something wrong with the world...

If Lord of the Rings beats Harry Potter, it probably won't be by much. Right now, Potter is at about $253 million and only made $10 million last week so it doesn't look like it will break $300 million total. Lord of the Rings should easily hit $250 million, but beyond that, I'm not sure how much more it will make or if it will be able to pass Potter. It depends on the film's longevity, which is something that Potter doesn't really seem to have.

i don't think it's that long of a wait, i heard that they made all three movies at once and now it's all gonna be released close to each other. so december is fellowship of the rings, january is two towers, and i guess february is the return of the king. keep in mind: that's what i *heard*.
harry potter had more publicity with the books and all, both children and adults are into harry potter, while lord of the rings...the first time i even heard of j.r.r. tolkein was in 8th grade. it's not that well known among really little kids...and from the trailers it looks like there are some really intense scenes that can scare the little ones (like the black riders/ringwraiths...and the orcs...nightmares! :p ). i think eventually it'll beat harry potter. :D i can't wait to see lotr!! ^_^

I think LOTR will easily hit the $200 mill mark and possible falter after that. I can't see it going furthur than $250. Potter will die out at about $280 or so, since it's been holding steady at the $8 - 10 mill mark.

You're right in that they filmed all 3 together, but there's still a lot of work to finish up each individual movie, including reshoots and all the special effects. Two Towers is coming out in December 2002, and Return of the King is out in December 2003.
It'll be a one year wait between films, but hopefully we'll have the DVD soon.

But I doubt the DVD would be out before the movies?

Ah, I was thinking of the lavish box set we will see once all three are out. So...will there be the added footage in that Aug 2002 release or will we have to wait for the box set to get the whole kittenkabootle?

The DVD is expected to contain at least 30 - 40 minutes of extras. It looks like the LOTR Box Set in 2004 will resemble the Jurassic Park Box Set. The release will more than likely be under the infinifilm banner as well.
