According to Variety TNT is eyeing another comic book property to serve as a companion to Witchblade, and this time around, the AOL/Time-Warner company isn’t looking to far from the home offices. According to the trade, the network is looking to adapt DC’s Deadman as an ongoing series.
The network has already committed to setting a Deadman series up in a similar fashion to Witchblade - a two-hour movie will serve as a standalone TV movie, and also as a pilot for an ongoing series. TNT sources were quoted as saying that Deadman is still in very early stages of development.
While a new Deadman series just launched from DC, the character debuted in Strange Adventures #205 in 1967. Originally a human named Boston Brand, “Deadman” was Brand’s onstage persona at the circus where he performed as a trapeze artist. Murdered in cold blood, Brand was given the power to possess the living, most often in order to avenge crimes. Brand also has the ability to travel to spirit realms, and is a figure among DC’s spiritual pantheon among others such as the Phantom Stranger, Dr. Fate, Dr. Occult, and the Spectre, and the Demon. Closely tied to the human realm, Deadman often acts as a guide to travelers in the spiritual realms of DC, and has found use in both the companies mainline titles as well as it’s Vertigo line.
If the script for the Deadman movie gets TNT’s approval, it will be filmed in Canada, with an estimated $1.4 million-per episode budget.
