Sophomore year has begun, and if Bloom says it's going to be awesome... well, far be it from me to doubt the words of a red-haired girl. 'Winx Club' has returned, and it's just as if the show hadn't missed a beat!

*Previously on 'Winx Club'*
It was the first day back from summer vacation, and as the gang regaled each other with their 'how I spent my time away' stories, Bloom is told that a girl with long flowing hair and traveling with a little pixie will soon cross paths with her.

Speaking of said girl, whose name is Layla, she was on a mission to save a group of pixies from having their energy taken from them. Unfortunately for her, the one who kidnapped them in the first place is Lord Darkar, who's certainly no pushover. With Layla in such a weakened state herself, the best she can manage is to flee with one of the pixies in arm... and search for help in freeing the others...

*Saturday, September 17th - 9:30 am EST on 4KidsTV (check local listings)*

Episode #128 - "Princess of Tides"
Summary: A mysterious girl named Layla has collapsed at Bloom's feet. Who is this girl and what happened to her, the girls will find out. Meanwhile, Lord Darkar employs some new help, and three familiar faces are about to get another shot at the keeper of the Dragonfire!

This Week's Notes:
- Now with one week under their belts, fall competition officially opens up this week as Winx faces off against the debuts of 'Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island' and 'The Buzz on Maggie' on WB and ABC, respectively.
- Keep the discussions civil, please. Luckily, nothing horrible happened in last week's talkback, and hopefully, it'll stay that way.
- Watch the spoilers! If you gotta do it, do so within reason and black boxes... or you'll suffer a fate much worse than Layla's fall off of Lord Darkar's tower.

What are you waiting for? Review this week's adventure already!

I noticed the "Princess of Tides" refrence last week when Techna said "She's a princess from the realm of Tides."

Which of course made me think of that lame movie "The Prince Of Tides".

That film was nominated for quite a few Oscars, Draven (it went 0 out of 8 tho). Then again, Titanic won quite a few Oscars (a record-tying 11!) and people say it's lame.

According to people on the Winx Club interest group on LiveJournal who've seen the original Italian version, you will see a LOT of movie references in Season 2. :anime:

For an episode called "Princess of Tides," we sure didn't learn much about Layla. I still like her and the interaction between her and the girls was cute, but...boring! New topic!

The witches are finally back! Ah, bliss. They're just as delightful as ever, except for Icy saying the b-word. Yecch. Seems so out of character. Yet I'm glad it wasn't Darcy or Stormy. That would be even more OOC. Stormy had the best lines this episode. I adore "Stop the insanity!" Their new jewelry by Darkar is lovely. I want one of those armbands myself. (Not the necklace. Too gaudy.)

Overall, this was a decent episode that moved the plot forward and foreshadowed. Nothing too major happened, but it was solid and efficient.

Moments of annoyance:
-The little pixie Layla called Blinky...her name is supposed to be Glim! I have the wand toy that comes with her and her name is Glim. Right there on the package. *sigh* Blinky is lame. I like Glim. Glim she shall be. (Screw you, writers.)
-Tecna is apparently taking a huge course load. She was nowhere to be seen except briefly in the beginning.
-Icy and the b-word.

I loved this little bit:

LAYLA: *looking at her hands* I've been asleep for four days?
MUSA: You can tell that just by checking out your hand?

That rocked. It's exactly what I was thinking...and never did get explained. Very amusing.

Ahhhh.... welcome back, witches. How I've missed thee. They brought the usual goodness, especially when they were trapped in Happy Fun Land. That place is liable to make even a GOOD guy snap!

No real action (again), but I'll excuse it, on account of the return of the Treacherous Trio. 4/5 on the current scale.

The witches were the best in this episode!!! Darcy trying to convince Icy and Stormy to pretend to be nice to get out on good bevavior, priceless!!! So happy to see them again so soon! Yes though the interaction between Layla and the other Winx Club girls wasn't "exciting" as others had hoped, they did have to learn how she got there, and where to go for their next adventure!!! Great episode and nice balance among the good guys and bad guys getting air time.

Yes though the interaction between Layla and the other Winx Club girls wasn't "exciting" as others had hoped, they did have to learn how she got there, and where to go for their next adventure!!!I think we have to remember that Layla just went through some very exciting times and she's very exhausted from her recent experience. I think she'll be a lot more exciting from now on.... :)

Ok, here's my review:

1. I absolutely love the girls new outfits!:anime:

2. I see that Icy is STILL pissed about Bloom defeating her! It was funny how Stormy couldn't get the P.A. to turn itself off.:p

3. Now that Darkar has given the Trix those amulets, it looks like they'll be even more maniacal and powerful than before!!!!!!

4. My favorite dialogue was when Stella mentions that she never sleeps for 4 days after shopping. Then, Tecna says, "True. You sleep for a week!" LOL!:D

Well, not much has happened just yet. The real action will be in the next ep. I'll be waiting for it.

As for this ep, I give it 3 stars. I can only shudder to think what Icy, Darcy, & Stormy plan to do to Bloom, newcomer Aisha/Layla, and the others with their brand new powers. Sounds like it won't be pretty.

I'm not sure if it's the worst episode of the series, but it sure was the dullest.

Wasn't expecting much from Layla waking up and the Winx girls, but surely they could've provided something. Though we do get a small bit of background information on the pixies... or at least the ones from her realm.

Lord Darkar meanwhile searches for some assistants, though it's not clearly mentioned why. He turns to the Trix, our favorite witches stuck in a so-called 'Affirmation Camp.' Which drives them nuts...

Which reminds me... I don't think they were playing into the whole 'we're annoyed at being here' vibe as well as I thought they could have. Their VAs seemed to force a lot of their dialogue, and that's quite a disappointment considering how convincing they were with their lines in Season One.

I'm not too proud about them working under Darkar, but I know they did it so they could get out of the 'camp.' I'm wondering how long it'll take the witches to betray Darkar and go out on their own again.

Quote of the Episode:
Hmmm... in all actuality, last week's episode was a lot better for quotes.

Still, I ended up picking this little gem, featuring silly ol' Stella (and Tecna):
"I never slept four days after shopping!"
"That's right... you slept for a week!"

Score: 6 out of 10. Very slow week, it seems...

Next week looks as if things will start to pickup, as the Winx girls head to the UnderRealm to help Layla rescue the pixies... and a rematch with the Trix and their first meeting with Darkar seems very likely.

Stormy: I AM SO OVERCOME WITH PEACE AND JOY!!!!

Sorry Freedom Fighter but I don't agree with you. I LOVED this episode.

Lot's of "setting up" work got done. And LOT'S of great lines.

The highlight of the episode was, of course the Trix in the hell that is Light Haven! Man, I don't think I would have lasted a DAY in that place. Cupcakes and tea on the north lawn while Lucas Luckshire seranades me with his Pan Flute? Uplifting numbers from Chrissy Cutebutton? And no escape from the PA system? My head is racked with agony just THINKING about it!

And I think the voice over work was GREAT from the Trix. It was MEANT to sound forced, since they REALLY don't believe what they are saying. Case in point...

Darcy: (monotone) Ah, what a beuatiful couple. Young love is the fruit on which my happiness feeds. (sarcastically) Yep. All you need is love.

I bet she wanted nothing more than to make fun of that couple, like they did with that Knight on the unicorn. But her FIRST priority was gettng OUT of Light Haven, so she forced herself to be nice.

The whole Light Haven scene was completely brillant. I must have watched the whole thing about 3 times over I loved it so much. And people call this show a "hack job".

And yes, the Trix were desperate to get OUT of Light Haven, so they didn't care what it took to leave. I loved the Trix little verbal jab at Darkar...

(Darkar teleports them to another part of Light Haven)
Stormy: We're STILL in Light Haven!
Icy: Great. Some break out.

But good point with the Trix cutting loose and calling the shots on their own terms again at some eventual point...

Two thoughts here....the Trix DO seem to like Darkar, so maybe he's a permantant addition, even if he DOES think he's in charge.

Also, the jewelary he gave them, MAY bind them from ever using their powers against him, or getting too far away. Time will tell here.

i wonder whos Bloom's opposite.....
Total speculation, but I have a feeling Bloom's opposite is Icy. Think about it, they were total rivals all first season, complete with a final show down. Icy, is mean, cynical, uncaring, ruthless. Everything Bloom is not.

But I think this episode absolutlely rocked. More favorite qoutes!

(Knight arrives from the west riding a unicorn)
Icy: Get a load of this loser. Keep on prancing pal, we're not into lame.
Stormy: Yeah, nice hair. Your mommy do it for you?

Icy: (angerily) Oh, how the blossoms dance in the breeze on this lovely afternoon. (With increasing venom in her voice) It makes me, oh, so happy.

Stormy: Life is such a beuatiful and precious thing! *growls*

Remember guys today is a gift, that's why they call it "the present".

i wonder whos Bloom's opposite..... I think its a safe bet to say it'd be Darkar. :D

I think the jewelry is suppose to 'control' them to the point of following his orders.. i think. Didnt he mention something about them being his or something after giving them the jewelry?

Anyway, this episode was more like a 3 out of 5 for me, only because of the Happy land part. Just loved the torment, 'specially Stormy. Of course, my favorite of the lines was when Prof. Wizzy was talking about the Fashion of Balance between light and dark and then Bloom commenting on talking to Stella about that. Very amusing indeed.

I would have given it a 5 out of 5 if they actually STARTED a bit of the rescue mission on this episode, but no go. So It got dropped by 2 points in my opinion. Talking about the Rescue mission is fine and dandy, but i wanted to see them at least preparing for it or something.

It's not Rainbow that made this show a "hack job", it's 4Kids for editing the heck out of it.

That said, sounds like a pretty good scene. (Wonders if any of our local b'casters will pick up season 2 soon.)

Bloom's opposite? I can't be certain, but I'm pretty sure I know. This spoiler is only for those that really want to be spoiled.

Bloom's opposite is herself. Darkar spells her and she turns into "Dark Bloom." (Insert Dark Phoenix joke here.) Here's a pic of her. I think she looks way better like this, but then I am witch girl.

Okay, making an evil twin for Bloom? What is this, a _soap_? Better recommend "Snark Weighs In" (http://snarkweighsin.blog-city.com) to watch it.

In response to Darcy's SPOILER space:

WHOA!!!! Darkar will turn poor Bloom EVIL?!   I will admit, it does sound like an interesting idea for a story. However I have to say, say it ain't so! NOT BLOOM!!!! SAY IT AIN'T SO!!!!:(
No wait, what am I saying? It WILL be so. It probably will happen near the end of the season. Makes me wanna cry.:crying:

Ok, I'm finished. I just had to say how I felt about this.

Bloom is without a doubt the strongest main character, power-wise, so she's the obvious choice for Darkar to make his. If she was enough to take out Icy, who had part of her own power, she could easily take out the entire Winx Club and then some. I've heard that she's actually evil for a good portion of the show. Quite a few of the last episodes, not just one or two. I like it, because it shows vulnerability, something she didn't really have enough of in season one. She went from knowing nothing about magic to suddenly knowing a lot and being able to do all these spells. We only saw her bumbling once or twice in early episodes, which is really not enough, considering she didn't have a clue about magic before she got to Alfea. And then bam, she's this all powerful goddess thing. Totally Mary Sueish. I'm hoping she'll be much less of a Mary Sue this go round and Dark Bloom is going to help with that a lot, I think. I love the fact that the Winx girls are going to have to defeat her somehow to save everything, instead of her saving the world again. It's a nice change.

Viper

Meh, I dont know how i feel about Evil Bloom. I guess it might be alright, if they deliver the story right. But that still doesnt explain who's opposite Darkar is. Bloom even mentioned last episode that she could sense her opposite and their power is getting stronger. Obviously Darkar hasnt spelled her yet, so i still stand by my idea of Darkar being her opposite.

Was originally going to post this on Monday, but I was working on some ratings comparisons (see accompanying thread here in the General Animation Forum).

Ratings for last week's season premiere... 2.1 for Kids' 6-11! 3rd best for the day on 4KidsTV, 8th best among all broadcast competition! It's also the show's best performance for an episode airing for the first time. But, it fell just short of tying the series-best 2.2, achieved four-and-a-half months ago (April 23rd, 9 am show). If I remember right... that was the first repeat of the Season 1 finale. Granted, the premiere airing back in December '04 garnered the show's then-series-best rating of 1.9.

Well, there's the jump that was kinda expected, especially since 'Winx' didn't really take off until spring of this year, partially benefiting from taking the 9 am hot spot away from 'Sonic X.' But, Kids' WB and ABC Kids debuted their fall line-ups in Week 2. Considering ABC Kids will only have three more full weeks before Thanksgiving (many pre-emptions for college football this year), this may be the one and only impression 'Winx' will get to make against its normal competition in this season's opening month.

They'd better make it a good one.

Ah, possesion. (Okay, not exactly, but still...) Another favorite plot of soap writers. At least it's not "Brandon turning out to be Prince Sky" from season 1...

Not too surprising, but I'll wait to see how it all goes down before making judgement. Bloom does seem the most obvious choice, though. She does look rather wicked in that screenshot. Frankly, I hope Bloom's going all darkside involves beating the crap out of the Winx girls. If it's one thing I have a hard time with, it's villains (or villainesses in this case) who have all this absolute power and all they do is monologue and "mwah ha ha" at the good girls. At least the Trix opened a can of whup butt on the Winx girls WHILE they were taunting.
