This is not a joke. This is the original version of Batman from Batman Beyond. See what the costume may have looked like:

That would be a great suit for an Underground batman resistance fighter in a Guerilla war.
But i'm very glad they decided to stick with the suit they have now :)
But nevertheless, that is a very cool design!

Huh. I'm glad they decided to give him eyes. :)

I am not fond of this design, and am VERY glad that they re-designed him for the final version. He just doesn't look, in any way, like Batman... or even a spin-off of Batman. His current design (the one that made it to the cartoon ;) ) is great though, IMO.

Ugh! That's horrible. I glad they wetn with the other design, much better than this one.

This design would have fitted if Batman Beyond was not trying to be Batman-y (in regards to the way he works through stealth and observation). He's more fit for some guerilla combat movement in future Gotham, but it is a cool design. I would have liked an episode where is revolved around a Batman drone designed just like that to kill him, or he could have had it as some environmental suit like Superman did at times in his animated series.

I beleive that was Glen Murakami's take on it. He is very anime influenced and that design really shows that aspect of his art. Its cool but I like the one they ended up with.

I'm pretty sure I have seen that before. It's not a bad design, I'm just really glad they went with the design we all know and love. :)
Still, it's not a bad design. I could have made of an interesting Killer Moth update for the show (just looking at the brown and orange/red on the design), or maybe an original Batman inspired villain.

Looks like there's a tiny bit of Azrael in there, what with the red and goldish colors.
Also looks like they used a little bit of that for Shriek's design. Clawed fingers, armor over the hands, faceless mask.

Looks to me sort of something that Batman would wear if he were in Teen Titans and working for Slade. With some tweeking I wouldn't have a problem with it. I think it needs some eyes.

I seem to recall seeing that image back when they were in concept stages and calling it BATMAN TOMORROW.... definitely not as good as the final concept.

Also looks like they used a little bit of that for Shriek's design. Clawed fingers, armor over the hands, faceless mask.Claws and fingers yeah, but not the mask. Shriek's helmet DOES have a pseudo-face. The big circle looks like an eye and the slit looks like a mouth. Frankly, it reminds me more of Firefly, but I haven't the slightest idea why.

But the style of it, how it's not exactly smooth, got some rough edges, etc. Besides, the khaki looks yellowish enough :).

Yeah, but both masks don't really have a face. I don't think i'd consider one eye resembling a face very much.

Binker! What is Batman: The Complete History? Is it a book? A website? What? Anyway in regards to the design it is pretty cool, the only real problem I see is the lack of a "face". Especially the triangular doodads above where the eyes should be. With no eyes on the face, my mind's eye tries to make the triangles into the eyes. Except that they're too high for eyes, making the "face" look distorted, like a child's drawing with the eyes at the very top of the head. I wonder if this design came in first, and somebody said, "no, no, it doesn't look a thing like Batman," then they moved toward what we know as Batman Beyond. If so, its a testament to the value of having more than one person working on the project. One guy to take it way out there, another one to reign it back in a bit. I still remember when I first read about "Batman Tomorrow" in TV guide, a cyber-teenage Batman of the future! It sounded so F-ing lame, I thought my beloved animated Batman had been ruined forever! Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be as good as we all know Batman Beyond to be. Goes to show, you really and truly canNOT judge a book by its cover, or its TV GUIDE synopsis. So if this design was a necessary step to arrive at a show that ROCKED then far be it from me to write it off as "horrible" or some other nonsense.

It could've worked, with some tweaking. The face would've needed to be more expressive, and there's way too much brown, but I kind of like the blocky body armour. It makes more sense than the final design, which is very slim and body-hugging and is seemingly crammed with electronics, yet somehow offers a ludicrous amount of protection against the bumps and bruises of being Bats.

Its sorta strange looking, but it still woulda worked...at least for me. The show was so well writen and ahead of its time...almost anything would've worked. It was my fav show next to Batman TAS at the time.:D
EDIT: You know what? Now that I look at it again it looks like the costume for "The Repeller" in the episode: "Untouchable".

It's OK. But I'm glad they went with what we all know and seem to love.

Personally I like the design in general, just not as a design for Batman. I am also glad they decided to rework it to the design we all know and love.
However... you can see that they used parts of this design for other character like Shriek and the general line Gotham PD uniforms.

They actually released a promo shot that looked mostly like the final suit, but with the mouth section open, around a year before the show.

What is Batman: The Complete History? Is it a book? A website? What? It's a book, written by Les Daniels:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0811824705/qid=1126851292/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/104-8230381-2785531?v=glance&s=books
Full of fantastic pics (including some cover art under the dust jacket & other stuff Alex Ross may have done just for this book, although I'm not really sure about that) & lots of interesting stuff from the history of the Dark Knight. I'd highly recommend it for any Bat-fan.
My particular copy is a Special Edition produced for the comics specialty market. The only difference from the regular version, though, is that mine has a number of pages at the end showing Batman comic covers down through the years.
... And according to the caption for that pic in the book, MilkManX is exactly right: it is an original concept drawing that Glen Murakami did for BB.
