Does Hawkgirl have that mace in the comics? Does she have a secret identity? If so, how does she hide her wings? Are her wings organic? What does J'onn eat or drink to keep him alive without starving? Does he eat at all?

As far as I know, Hawkgirl doesn't have any hypertech weapons, in the comics; he favored weapon is a spear, and a normal one, at that.

AFAIK, her wings are artificial in the comics.

As for MM, I don't know if he eats or not. He probably does.

In the comics, Hawkgirl does have a mace, but not a techno one.

J'onn eats OREOS! OREOS! And lots of 'em. He used to, but I'm not sure now... :D

He still eats Oreos...

I could be wrong, but I think there was a story where it was established that Oreos were like a drug to him, so he had to stop.

Please tell me you're kidding. The Martian Manhunter eats Oreo cookies... and they're like a drug to him? That's sooo corny...

I hope Dini & Timm don't touch that one from the comics with a 10-foot pole... I'd rather never know whether or not Martian Manhunter eats at all than to turn one of the Justice League members into a walking advertisement for Nabisco...

I can just see it now:
Shade: "What are you doing?"
Martian Manhunter: "I'm changing the molecular structure of the wall your shadows are on so that the wall is transparent. I can do this because I eat LOTS OF OREO COOKIES."  :(

It's true. He got addicted to Oreos. It's not the WORST that could happen, but he liked them A LOT. Anyway, a recent issue shows him sitting in his home. eating Oreos, with Oreos piled around him...

Actually, I was so fond of Oreos as a kid that people would give me packages of them for my birthday!!!

--better if he was addicted to something like Chinese food? No telling how MSG affects the Martian constitution. "As backward a planet as Earth may be, I'll concede it produces a very patatable spicy pork." ;)

In the comics, the original version of the Thanagarian version of Hawkman and Hawgirl (there have been three or four versions of Hawkman and Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman, depending on how you count) use a variety of earth weapons, depending on what is needed. Ordinary maces (not high tech ones) became more and more common over the years.

Both Hawkman and Hawkgirl have secret identities. Hawkman (the alien Katar Hol) is known as Carter Hall, museum curator. Hawkgirl (the alien Shayera Thal, Katar's wife) is known as Shiera Hall, Carter's wife. The odd thing, though, was that to make it harder for people to figure out their secret ID's, it was not common knowledge that Hawkman was married, so Carter's assistant Mavis was constantly hitting on Hawkman.

The wings are high-tech. Basically, the outfit consists of an anti-gravity belt which combined with the wing-harness allows for flight. Without the wings, the anti-gravity belt pretty much just lets you go up or down.

The above info is based on the particular comics version which most closely matches the cartoon version.

Maybe Hawkgirl is a museum curator in Justice League. She did know about the island of the Amazons...maybe there's a connection (she found artifacts or something).

Caught WHAT? Hawkgirl knows about Themyscara (sp) because she heard legends on Thanagar. Isn't that what she said in Secret Origins?

Not really (how could she hear legends about a place that exists on a planet that she never heard of before?). She said that she heard about Themyscara because "a little bird told her." She could have heard about the legends while on Earth, but how could she--an alien--have heard about a place that other people (who are natives on this planet) have never heard of. So, she either:

1) Came across evidence of the civilization in her duties at the museum (assuming she is one--which would be tough considering that she'd have little to no knowledge of Earth history or archeology going in).
2) Actually heard it from a bird (she can communicate with birds).
3) She flew over the island one day and made a mental note of it.

Thanks for the praise, Ricochet and Flash.

Well...she says

"The home of the Amazons. I always thought it was merely a legend..."

So I guess I was wrong. Makes sense. But it clearly indicates that before Wonder Woman said she was from the big T, Hawkgirl didn't know it existed.

It's most likely that your second idea is right, IMO. It was probably intended as just a little joke for everyone who knew about her bird-communication power.

I wonder if Hawkgirl goes to the park and talks to the pigeons in her free time? :)

Heh. Now all we need is a "pigeon shakedown scene" in the Hawkgirl spotlight episode, like they did in Men in Black with the pug.

Hawkgirl: "I mean it! Spill, or you're going to be squab in a fancy restaurant tonight!"

BTW, anybody interested in the incredibly tangled story of Hawkman and Hawkgirl should visit http://www.comicboards.com/dcguide/HW/newindex.html. It does the best job so far of trying to untangle the mess that is Hawkman, Hawkwoman, Hawkgirl, and Wings the Hawkdog (OK, I made that last one up, but you get the picture).

Hmmm. I get a 404 not found error when I try to go there.

I might instead recommend my Hawkman FAQ web site at:

That is truly bizarre. I can see the site fine through Netscape, clicking through to links and everything, but IE barfs and dies on it.

In any event, your FAQ provides the same information, plus more info on the latest incarnation of Hawkgirl and Hawkman from JSA. I'll need to browse through it more thoroughly later.

Wait a minute. The Guard got it right. After Wonder Woman says that she has been in Themyscira all of the Flash's life, Hawkgirl says "The home of the Amazons. I always thought it was merely a legend." And that's it. There's nothing said about a little bird telling her anything. So she must be up on her Greek Mythology from having spent some time on Earth. If the reason for that is because she works in a museum, who knows? She obviously didn't think that the place was real though, so she definitely never saw it or visited it.

Just remember that "Themyscira" was the name of the Amazon's city-state in Greek Mythology. However, it wasn't an island. The comic books added the part about the Amazons leaving man's world to live on an island (Paradise Island), and the Amazons named it after their former home. So while the first Themyscira is in the Greek fables, the second one is probably unknown to most people on Earth.
