I did one of these last year, and I'm doing it again. Usually the year's biggest releases come in Q4, but this year it seems that most of the anticipated Fall releases have been postponed, so whatever was Q123 GotY will probably be overall GotY.
EDIT:
Oops, I tried to post a poll with this, but my server got stuck and I had to refresh and it was already posted. Oh, well, I guess that leaves more options, but these are the options I would've put on the poll:
(in order of release)
Resident Evil 4
Zelda: The Minish Cap
Lumines
God of War
Guild Wars
Meteos
Conker: Live and Reloaded
Killer 7
Madden NFL '06
Nintendogs
Advance Wars: Duel Strike
Other
Haha, I guess it hasn't been such a great year for gaming.
Resident Evil 4 gets my vote so far, and the only games that MAY change my mind are Shadow the Hedgehog and Fire Emblem: PoR.
Killer7 - No contest.
No other game this year has gripped me quite like this did.

Shadow of the Colosus
no contest Can't really say it's the best game so far considering it hasn't been released yet. Sure the demo is great, but it's a demo from E3 in May, the game has changed alot since then and im sure it will be a contender for overall GotY.
Thus far I'd have to go with God of War for best game of 05'. I loved Resident Evil 4, but God of War was alot more fun and Kratos is easily the coolest character of this console generation, sorry Dante.

Of the ones I know, Resident Evil 4. Killer 7 was awesome but not in a "game of the year" kinda way.

RE4 probably gets, but the years not up yet...I reserve my vote till I play Star Wars Battlefront 2.

RE4 for me right now, but I'll give you a definite answer when I play more of God of War.

Just to prove how behind on games I am (damn you EverQuest!) I'm going to have to vote for Pokemon Emerald. The best game I've actually played this year is Metroid Prime, which had been sitting on my shelf untouched for about two years.

I'm behind on games, too, Dirtbag. I don't think I've bought any game released in 2005 so far. That will soon change with Capcom Classics Collection, Mega Man X Collection, and Midway Arcade Treasures 3, though. And possibly Soul Calibur III; we'll see how much I have left after DVDs.
For the game that I've enjoyed the most that I've PLAYED in 2005, though, it'd have to be a tie between Burnout 3: Takedown and Mortal Kombat Deception. Mmm, Konquest Mode was fun. Also, GTA San Andreas gets an honorary mention.

AWdS No other game has drained my DS's batteries or social life like that. Then again, I don't have uch of a social life yet.

I'm gonna have to go with WWE Day of Reckoning 2. The new blood system was awesome.
So far? That's easy. It's called Kirby: Canvas Curse. Screw you, RE4.

We Love Katamari.
I mean...duh.
If I had to pick one game right now, I would definately put my money on FEAR. I've only played the demo, but it's good. Scary good.
