View Full Version : Do You Like Being a Princess?

I don't know if this makes me a bad person, but I never want to be a girl.

When I play a video game, I use the character as an avatar of myself to be transported into another world were I battle the baddies and get the girl in the end.

And I was looking at the preview for Kameo for the Xbox 360 and kinda frowned at the fact that the game and world look fantastic, but I've noe desire to play as a fairy princess.

Does this happen to anyone else? Do any other of you have, not a problem, but a strong preference to play as your own gender?

It depends on how you look at it.

For games such as WA#3, where the main charachter is a girl, but it is a group of heroes and there are guys, I don`t mind at all.

I could connect with Virginia as a charachter, regardless of her gender.

To me, it is more of "what type is the main charachter" than their gender. If it is "lonely, slighty scared person with courage and conviction", no matter how steretypical that sounds, unless it is too cheezy(which I`ve only found in really one case, Star Ocean 3), I can connect with the charachter.

I suppose that makes me an oddball in liking Tidus over Squall and Cloud(Tough guy with a soft side types), even though I like them all, because I could connect with him more. In the case of Tales of Symphonia, this meant I felt more for the villain than the hero, and sympathized with him a lot. I honestly did not want to kill him, even after all he`d done.

But in a game like Baten Kaitos, where the main guy is a complete ass combined with the horrible voice acting(it takes a lot for me to say that) and IMO, card battle system, I couldn`t get through it.

With an action game like Kameo, I guess it would be much different from an RPG with a group of charachters. I suppose it would be odd, but not enough to prevent me from enjoying the game, as long as the charachter is a type I can connect with.

I happen to like choosing female characters when I have an option. It's clear that the male Japanese programers hold prefrence over those characters, so they're made better.

Seriously, though. I don't mind playing as a female. I never really see the hero as an avatar of myself, so it's not a problem for me.

What about fighting games? Does your "not wanting to play as a girl" apply to that too, or is it just adventures?

I always choose a white male character, doesn't have to be a tough guy. Makes me feel more like me, not that that's necessairly a good thing. But if I can't choose I don't mind playing as anybody.

Personaly the sex really doesn't matter, I mean I enjoyed playing FFX with a male lead and FFX-2 with a female lead

though on a somewhat related note, I would so kill someone just to have Princess Maker be re-released for some system or handheld...I mean that was inventive gameplay for the time...

I have no problem playing games using female characters, but I do prefer male ones.

I never really see it as the character being myself in the game. Quite the opposite, I view it as me controlling the character in which the game has provided. I usually like using female characters because, as Tash stated, programmers usually seem to put a little more time into creating them.

As for Kameo, I don’t think I would have any problem playing with it. The only way I would have a problem playing female characters is if the game got too sickeningly and stereotypically girly. So if Kameo is a princess defeating large armies to save her kingdom, that’s great. However if half the time you spend cloths shopping and taming unicorns for tea parties and checking out the local princes, then I start getting quite uneasy.

I enjoy playing the female characters from time to time. In fact, for the past two years my main character in Final Fantasy XI has been a female elvaan. I've grown quite attached to her after all this time:

Here she is on her "vacation" to the Hall of the Gods...

and here she is sloooowly widdling away at the hp of an ice elemental ("outlast the enemy": that's the paladin motto :p )

There is nothing wrong with a character from either gender. The only gripe I have with female characters are the ones that are just made to be eye candy and not focus on the gameplay. That and certain people on MMORPG's who pretend to be women or hunt down female characters for their own sick pleasures.

It's fun to be girl characters sometimes. I especially like possessing female bodies in Geist (what... stop looking at me like that).

This brings a question to mind. As I said, I have a female character in an MMORPG. I certainly don't claim to be a woman in real life (in fact I hate it when male characters start hitting on my female character....quite an uncomfortable experience...). On the other hand, it's always weird to me when someone refers to me as "he" in the game. Yes, I'm a male in real life, but while in the game I don't see other characters as talking to ME...they're talking to my character.

Anyone else out there with a female MMORPG character that feels the same way?

Normally, I don't really care what gender the figure I'm controlling is, as long as the game is good.

Whether being a girl is an issue depends on how girly she's portrayed. I could never play a Barbie game, for instance....and Peach is really pushing it.

But they either have to look like some sort of Dinosaur(because reptiles look astheticly awsome) or have transformation spells where they can become different things in combat or are able to summon creatures.

Nothing says Suprise in PVP like instantly transforming into/summoning a golem and totaly killing a person 10 levels above you because you have maxxed out strength...

either that or MoBs, becoming nigh invicible allows for greater exploration of the zones...

I don't care about playing as a girl because, uh, they're video game characters that aren't real. I'll play Kameo because it looks great and hopefully plays great, not just because I can be a super fairy princess.

Unfortunately, most games that force you to play as a girl are actually made for little girls, or feature pathetically one-dimensional femme fatale-stereotypes. Which is to say that they suck. I.e., Barbie Horse Adventures or Bloodrayne.

For once I would like to a thick black woman (that actully) looks black in a game. But I always did like playing Peach In SMBII, next to Luigi's jump she has the best power in the Mario games. No one beats Chung-LI in fighting games.

Makes no difference to me.

"But, you're already a female!!" Yes I know but at times, I prefer playing as a guy. For instance, I cannot STAND Jill [Valentine]. I play Resident Evil 3: Nemesis often and being able to play with Carlos is what I long for. And hearing him, too. :anime: I can hear his voice actor as other characters as well in the game. :D

With the Onimusha series, I prefer to play with Samanosuke and Jacques than Jubei. I don't much enjoy playing as Oyu and Michelle. I MUCH more prefer Kaede.

With the Dino Crisis series, hands DOWN I love playing as the hot Regina!! Dylan's cool but he's certainly not a huge favourite of mine. Mike [Wired, Dino Stalker] is so damn cute!! I love playing Dino Stalker.

I guess it's just me.

Fighting games I'll play eithe gender easily, but I'm more apt to pick the guy who resembles me most, most of the time.

WA 3, while it has a female lead, I can get behind Jet or Clyde who more resemble that which I like outta my heroes.

Not when I'm playing Chun-LIE.Hona can do the 1000 slap to counter the 1000 kick

besides Alpha Chun-Li and SF3 Chun-Li can't do the contant 1000 kick...besides Gil is quite possibly the character that can kill instantly w/o even trying

I prefer to play as a male character. Mainly in RPGs, though. Especially, if the main character doesn't have any lines. It's a heck of alot easier for me to imagine what he's saying.

It won't keep me from a good game, but, yeah, I prefer to be a guy.

That doesn't make you a bad person, just a healthy male. ;)

I've never really thought about this issue. Maybe it's because the majority of games I play have male main characters. Yeah, I play female fighters in fighting games. Yeah, I played Peach in SMBII and I played girls whenever they were part of a team in a game. But I don't recall playing games where a female was THE main character. If I did, it certainly wasn't memorable. Maybe it's because most games with female main characters aren't really for girls as much as they are for sexually-starved guys given their skimpy character designs, crappy gameplay, and just all around suck.

Oh and no I don't mind playing female characters in video games because...well it's a video game.=/

I don't know if this makes me a bad person, but I never want to be a girl. For games where you build the main character from scratch (more or less) I can see where you're coming from. But for games where you're playing predefined and premade character, I don't usually see myself as that character. Those are the kind of games I play for the story. Kind of like a good book or a good movie. In those situations the main character isn't an avatar for myself, I'm just an observer along for the ride.

Also, why is it when I saw this thread the first thing that poped into my head was the only memorable scene of the only episode of Juniper Lee that I've seen?

JC: "AHHHH! I'm a little girl!"

I just choose whoever. Usually in fighters (which is the main type of game I play), it tends to be female characters more often than not. Not really anything to it other than the fact I like the characters (be it from a visual standpoint, personality, play style, etc.). Hell, as an aside my favorite video game character is female (May Lee from the KoF games).

Actually I do that with my books too. I just like to live through the character I'm playing or reading about. With a feeling of, "Yes, yes.... I know what he means," or "...ah yes, I'd do that myself," or lastly, "I WISH that would happen to me."

Can't do that when the main character's fawning after the high school hunk or sporting a cute bikini.

There's a game out there a friend of mine can't stop raving about... Beyond Good & Evil and he says it's up there with God of War in his book. And I remember hearing about it and that it was awesome, but I have to say I didn't rush out to buy it cuz.... I don't want to play as a girl. :(

I know it makes me a bad person, and I swear I'll play it sometime, but I can't help but think about how much quicker I'd've picked it up if the main character were a sarcastic and cocky fighter named Jack or something.

I don't mind playing girls. I'd rather look at a girl on my screen for 95% of the game over a pretty boy or some generic musclebound (although I'll choose a goofy looking male if I had the option to).And whenever I play girls, if there is a romantic option (which is actually quite rare in today's games) I usually try to dump the guys and be as rude to them as possible. She's MY girl!

My very first Baldur's Gate game was as a girl. I played an evil female thief. The problem is I end up making customizable females a little too masculine in personality (but hot in looks!).

I'd like to see more Princess protagonists reach our shores to be honest. I actually thought Princess Toadstool was one of the stronger characters in Super Mario RPG. Near the end, her weapon was more reliable that Mario's unpredictable turtle shells and Bowser's attack power seemed to level off. Toadstool was the only character who actually seemed to really get stronger as the game went on.

I've never really been too fond of playing as female characters because they don't act like I want them to most of the time (they're often kinda wishy-washy or PMS~y).
