Here's a little game for the board.

Imagine you have been put in charge of Warner Home Video's Family Entertainment division. On your first day of work the head of WHV, Mr. Cigarchomp N. Fatcat, waddles into your office and says...

"Look kid, we need to see how the market will respond to a Looney Tunes DVD. I'm going to put you in charge of programming the first one."

You are given the challenge of compiling a list of twenty cartoon titles to put onto a DVD called "Looney Tunes All-Stars." However, Mr. Fatcat has given you these rules to follow:

1. You cannot use cartoons from the former Turner library. Mr. Fatcat doesn't say why, but you hope so they can be remastered first.

2. Each of the five major directors (Friz, Chuck, McKimson, Tex, and Clampett) must be represented.

3. You cannot include any cartoons banned from June Bugs, or dealing with Indians, or starring Bosko.

4. Bugs, Daffy, Porky, Tweety, and Road Runner each must have two cartoons (regardless of team-ups...so, in theory there could be four Daffy-and-Porky's).

5. In addition, Foghorn Leghorn, Pepe le Pew, Speedy Gonzales, Elmer Fudd, and Yosemite Sam each must have their own separate slots. Elmer and Sam's cartoons don't necessarily have to star just them.

6. Marvin the Martian and the Tasmanian Devil must be represented, but they don't necessarily have to have their own spots (for example, Taz can appear on one of the two required Bugs shorts, etc.).

Mr. Fatcat then tells you that the final DVD must be a product that all audiences can enjoy, and reminds you that the future of any future Looney Tunes DVD rests solely on the success of this first disc. If this disc fails to sell, he will punish the world by releasing four more Scooby compilations next.

What do you do, hotshot? What DO you do?

(And just to make this clear, this isn't a race or contest to see who can come up with the best ideas. I'm just curious to see how everyone would plan such a release. Discussion and queries about choices should be encouraged. :bosko: )

Yes, I know, but I was trying to emulate the same likely restrictions Warner would probably put on their first release. God forbid these DVD's be marketed to collectors, huh?

"Plane Dippy" - Fred Avery

"The Impatient Patient" - Norm McCabe
"Eatin' On The Cuff" - Robert Clampett
"Daffy Dilly" - Chuck Jones
"Mouse Wreckers" - Chuck Jones
"Odor of the Day" - Arthur Davis
"For Scentimental Reasons" - Chuck Jones
"Hen House Henry" - Robert McKimson
"Hillbilly Hare" - Robert McKimson
"Golden Yeggs" - Friz Freleng
"Sahara Hare" - Friz Freleng

"Lumber Jerks" - Friz Freleng

I dunno if I went by the rules 100%, but I think this would make a good collection. All the cartoons would be restored and uncut.

Then, with all due respect you can't include any B/W cartoons. Much as WE like them, WB doesn't seem to think they're "marketable".

Also, let me display my ignorance here, but would you give me a general idea of what the Turner library includes - so I can EXCLUDE it when I compile my list?:)

That would be all of the color cartoons released before "Hare Devil Hare" (including that cartoon). Unfortunate considering there are so many excellent cartoons in that package.....but if they're being remastered, then it's okay...

I agree that it's unlikely that Warner would allow "black & white's" on their first DVD, but at the same time they also probably wouldn't care if a "dubbed" pre-1948 is put onto it.

I personally hate that possibility, but I also didn't want to take away two entire groups of cartoons. I didn't want to stifle anyone's ideas too much. :)

(I myself have a strong feeling that barring any chronological release, the only black and white films we'll see for a while on the discs would be something like "Porky in Wackyland" or "Porky's Duck Hunt." Even then, I'm sure Warner Bros. will be tempted to use colorized prints.)

I would assume no since Indians and the Bugs Bunny Censored 12 aren't allowed (several of those contain blackfaces)

I don't quite get why black and white cartoons are allowed, but pre 1948 cartoons aren't. The only explanation for such a move would be that they are restoring those titles. They should restore the 1948-1951 cartoons with BR replacement titles as well.

Because in the realm of the fantasy, it is believed that the pre-1948's will be restored.

But as far as I'm concerned, because I hate the dubbed prints, and that is more than likely what Warner Bros. would use if they had their druthers. :)

Besides, it wouldn't be a challenge if I said "Any of the 1000+ cartoons." :bosko:

Here goes :

1. Porky In Wackyland (1937)
2. You Oughta Be In Pictures (1940)
(I included these two because Warner has released them before and I wanted at least ONE Clampett on my list - though I'm sure WB'd go with "Dough For The Do-Do"(1949).
3. Fast & Furry-ous (1949)
4. Duck Amuck (1953)
5. The Rabbit of Seville (1950)
6. Bad Ol' Putty Tat (1949)
7. A Bear For Punishment (1951)
8. Bully For Bugs (1953)
9. The Cat's Bah (1954)
10. Birds Anonymous (1957)
11. The High And The Flighty (1956)
12. Speedy Gonzales (1955)
13. Hare Trimmed (1953)
14. What's Opera, Doc? (1957)
15. What's Up Doc? (1950)
16. Ducking the Devil (1957)
17. Zoom And Bored (1957)
18. One Froggy Evening (1955)
19. The Three Little Bops (1957)
20. Duck! Rabbit! Duck! (1953)

The only requirement I couldn't meet was the Tex Avery toon :(. All his best Warner's are either B/W or in the Turner library, IMHO
