Ok, I saw 'Unbreakable' in the theatres, rented it on DVD and just this weekend watched it on the Starz channel. When I got to the end I noticed something...THEY CHANGED THE ENDING!!!!!!
Well, they didn't change the WAY it ended, but they did add something to it that just ruined it.
Now, for those who haven't seen the movie, STOP READING NOW!
Alright then.
When Bruce Willis confronts Elijah at the end of the movie and learns who and what he is he, originally, turns in shock/disgust and leaves the studio. End of movie.
Now in the version they just aired on Starz they added a couple of things. When Bruce first turns to walk out of the room after learning about Elijah's actions over the years they do a 'freeze-frame' on Bruce Willis' face and paste over it:
David led federal authorities to Limited Edition where they discovered evidence linking Elijah to 3 recent acts of terrorism.
Then they cut back to Samual Jackson as he tells Bruce that it was the childrens fault for calling him Mr. Glass. Now second freeze-frame:
Elijah was convicted and is now serving a life sentence in a prison for the criminally insane.
THAT'S JUST WRONG! The movie did NOT need this! Of course this was obviously added for the benefit of....SOMEONE....in response to the WTC tragedy. But do they REALLY think that we are stupid enough to think that Bruce's character wouldn't have come back and whipped-up on Elijah later? Did they have to add this little 'message' so that we'd feel better about the hero after being told that, yes he did bust him, and that the villain is now paying the penalty?
Yes, I know this seems a bit trivial, but it seems to me that the media, the government and everyone in-between is force-feeding us the idea that the WTC tragedy should not be forgotten (which it should not...don't get me wrong!) while at the same time erasing images of the twin towers from pretty much every new movie that is coming out in the future.
So maybe it's just me, but I found this to be an insult to the intelligence and sensibilities of the average American, not to mention spoiling a perfect ending to an excellent movie.
