Jessica Alba lands the role of Jeannie the genie in the upcoming film version of the 1960s camp classic I Dream of Jeannie.
Line up to rub her bottle. Former Dark Angel Jessica Alba, recently seen in the films Sin City and Fantastic Four, has been cast in the titular role in the upcoming TV-to-movie conversion I Dream of Jeannie. The actress beat out several other "It girl" actresses, including Kate Hudson, Alicia Silverstone, and Lindsay Lohan. The original role was played by Barbara Eden.
I Dream of Jeannie premiered in 1965 and ran for five seasons. It told the story of astronaut Anthony Nelson, played by future Dallas star Larry Hagman, who stumbles upon a genie's bottle after his rocket crash-lands on a desert island. After he rubs the bottle, a genie named Jeannie pops out and attempts to fulfill her new master's every wish. Unfortunately for Nelson, Jeannie's wish fulfillment only serves to mess up his life in comedic ways!
Former Saturday Night Live comedian Jimmy Fallon stars as Major Nelson. The film will be directed by Gurinder Chadha, who directed the international hit Bend It Like Beckham. Jeannie is set for a 2006 release and is another in a continuous stream of movies based on television shows.

I just don't see it... I really don't. I can't picture Alba as Jeanie. Blonde just don't work for her (re: F4).

Wasn't this role originally taken by Kate Hudson? I wonder what made her turn it down. Although I've never seen the television show, the premise does seem interesting. Hmmmm a female genie played by Jessica Alba...that is enticing. Of course, the hair doesn't have to be blonde.

Yeah, I mean the fan base is limited and newcomers will be scared away...it's the same show as Bewitched pretty much, only this movie won't have the star power Bewitched did.
My estimated gross: 34.9 million
yes, that's oddly specific.

I can actually see Alba as jeanie(but wouldnt put her as the final chioce) but the wackiest idea is Fallon playing as Nelson...I mean thats just wack! :anime:
I hope they dont go with the bewitched idea and make them making the show while finding out that Alba is a real genie...ugh...

We can probably expect Season sets of the TV series "I Dream Of Jeannie" to start coming out next year around the time the movie is released.

Alba seems ok for the part, but Fallon?? The whole dynamic between jeanie and the military man might not be the best in this film. It's hard for me to picture Jimmy Fallons as anything military. Oh well, maybe we'll be surprised. I remember watching reruns of the show when I was a kid, good times.

hot as hellfire and the perfect fantasy jeannie but i don't see alba in a comedy role...would've been better to have alicia imo....and it'll never happen lol, but i would've had tom hanks as nelson, kevin spacey as major healey and anthony hopkins as dr. bellows...but i really detest these tv rapings err 'remakes' anyhow...the brady bunch movies thus far the only truly great ones.

bad casting choices for both roles in my opinion. i CAN see kate hudson as jeanie, but diffenently not alba. fallon has been pretty horrible in anything he's done

Alba's career seems to be on the rebound---so far. She's the least annoying of any of those casting choices. Lindsay Lohan would have been a terrible choice, and I'm really beginning to despise Hudson.

I always preferred Jeanie to Bewitched, but...
Fallon??? Since when can he carry a movie? This project's in trouble already.

Jessica Alba has no comedic skills. This doesn't work. I wish they'd cast comediennes for these sitcom remakes (if they have to do them) rather than these good looking actresses who don't do comedy well.

Knowing Fallon he gonna start saying his line and then in mid sentence gonna start to laugh in every scene.
And then look directly at the camera.

I'm hoping this movie WILL get made as written here... then when it bombs Ho'wood can finally see that they're completely stupid idiots that need to have their kneecaps smashed in and must stop doing remakes.

The sad thing is I agree with you(although I would've preferred Kate Hudson). Maybe it's because I watched I Dream of Jeannie when I was a kid and I'm a little older now, but how was Lohan even in the running? She's a kid! I thought the Nelson/Jeannie dynamic was about adults.
Not that Jimmy Fallon is an adult. I can almost see him as Major Healy, a bumbling sidekick, but Nelson? No way.
I wonder what the plot will be. Are they going to pull it back like Bewitched and make it some sort of self parody/tribute/whatever the heck it is they were trying to do? Maybe they could make Jeannie some sort of being accidentally created by the military to be better prepared in the Middle East. Hm, Alba would probably be better at playing Jeannie's sister.

Jessica Alba dressed as a harem girl sounds like a very good idea.
And I don't think it's necessary for Jeannie to be a blond.
The problem I have is I don't see her as being too funny.
And Jimmy Fallon is a huge mistake.
He may be able to pull off a Major Healey, but with him as a lead this film has disaster written all over it.

Yep.
The way I see it is Major Nelson was an astronaut, the best of the best. He's a strait shooter who's honest, hard working and has earned his way.
The comedy comes from him loving what he's got and all this free stuff threatens that.
Jimmy Fallon comes off like a slacker who if given magic wishes would have a golden hot tub filled with hooters girls inside of 5 seconds.

Just because Jessica Alba is gorgeously hot, blonde, and popular doesn't mean she's right for the part. I'm no casting director and I'm not gonna claim that I have the ultimate word on whether this is a good idea or not, but... she really doesn't seem right for it.

How can any of you say that Jeannie doesn't need to be blonde? One of the many gags on the TV show was that Jeannie had a mischievous brunette twin sister name Jeannie.

If they don't do that gag then I don't see how it matters.
I think the reason for Jeannie to be blonde is because she's supposed to be a "dumb blonde," but that seems old fashioned and Jessica Alba just doesn't look right as a blonde.

I was watching EXTRA earlier today (I know. I know. But They were covering the VMAs, and I couldn't exactly sit through the whole thing last night). Anyway, they interviewed Jessica Alba and asked if she was really making this movie. Her response?
"No, it's just a rumor."
Ladies and Gentlemen, Alba is not Jeannie.

Wow, this movie is a great idea. Especially after Bewitched....But where's Will Ferrell? He should ask Jeanie to make Bewitched disapper!
As long as this keeps up, anyone want to see The Rock as Herman Munster and Antonio Banderas playing Gomez Adams?

No we do NOT need another Addams family movie!
Sorry, but reading Antonio Banderas as Gomez was too much even for a joke.
AHEM that the Jessica Alba/Jeannie movie is just a rumor.
I was scared for a month about this.

So will this be like Bewitched where the plot is about a movie within a TV show about a movie where they're making a TV show, but it's reality? The only difference will be Fallon looking at the camera and smiling half the time.

Note to Hollywood: Leave Jimmy Fallon alone.
And for that matter, go back and get Kate Hudson. That's an order.
