Yooooooooow, Kelly Clarkson!- Andy Stitzer, having chest waxed

Release Date: August 19, 2005

Rating: R

Studio: Universal Pictures

Director: Judd Apatow

Starring: Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd, Romany Malco, Seth Rogen

Plot Summary: 40-year-old Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell) has done quite a few things in his life. He's got a cushy job stamping invoices at an electronics superstore, a nice apartment with a proud collection of action figures and comic books, good friends, a nice attitude. But there's just one little thing he hasn't quite gotten around to doing yet--something most people have done by his age. Andy's never, ever, ever had sex. His friends at the store consider it their duty to help, but nothing proves effective enough until he meets Trish (Catherine Keener), a 40-year-old mother of three. Andy's friends are psyched by the possibility that "it" may finally happen...until they hear that Andy and Trish have begun their relationship based on a mutual no-sex policy.

Comments:
I just went and saw the movie at my theater's sneak preview last night, and I've got to say...it is, bar none, the funniest movie of this year. I'd go as far as to say that this is the "Anchorman" of 2005.

So many positive points...

- Steve Carell shows that he can be an amazing actor, and is completely believable as an old virgin and a nerd (his house is stocked with countless toys and videogames)

- His friends, mostly played by unknowns, are also utterly believable...those of us who are in or have been in college know these guys.

- Nudity is present, but it never becomes a main focus or a, "OMG LOOK we have boobiez in our movie" thing. Nothing sexually explicit.

The only negatives I could come up with...there was more product placement in the movie than I would have liked (Halo, Mortal Combat, Bourne Identity, Dawn of the Dead, for starters). Other than that, if you're comfortable with partial nudity and a bit of cursing (it does deserve the "R" rating, after all), then go see this movie.

I haven't laughed like that at a movie since Team America was in theaters...

Saw it. It is a great comedy. Carrell is reliably funny with his deadpan delivery although he does play the straight man here instead of wacky support like he usually does. Still, he is appropriately nerdy.

Catherine Keener probably keeps this movie believable, she gets a pretty standard role as "the girl" but of course she's such a good actress she can play "normal" more believable than everyone else. Just watch how she acts, and her mannerisms. She tells a lot without having to rely on just words. I like how she made her like a real person with her stop-go laughs during regular conversations, like real people do while talking.

However, I can't give it completely perfect marks because it has the requisite vomit scene, which I hate. Why does every baudy comedy have to have vomiting? Do people actually like these? Or find them funny? Gross-outs are one thing, but vomiting is just, eh. It seems like Hollywood thinks people like these scenes in their raunchy comedies. You can still be raunchy without vomit scenes.

And I also found Carrell's friends a little too pushy and somewhat annoying. Onscreen it's amusing, but if my coworkers were always trying to push me to get laid or go to bars every time they talked to me, I would have killed them. Seriously, I would.

Watch it for the great leads, but I found the supporting characters a little annoying. They're good actors, but annoying characters.

The guy with the beard was playing a next-gen Mortal Kombat game with an N64 controller.

Plus Andy's character also likes to collect Gundam models (you can see a box of a Gundam Mk. II Titans Color lying around as well as a Dragonball GT action figure).

But other than that, it was a great movie.

I haven't seen this yet, but I am a huge fan of Steve Carrell. It's beaten the expectations on friday with more than $7 million! That's pretty great for an R-rated movie starring unknowns. I hope that it helps "The Office"'s ratings, because that show has seemed to perpetually be on the bubble since it's start earlier this year.

It is just as if not better than Wedding Crashers. This film was awesome, I bet it will hit $100 million due to word of mouth

Me and 2 buddies of mine saw a late showing of this last night and everyone in the place laughed their freakin' heads off. My favorite part was when Andy got locked in the surround sound room and there was porn in the background and the 3 other guys just stood there laughing. It wasn't as good as Wedding Crashers, but it was pretty darn good.

Well I saw this movie last night and to be honest with you all, I thought the movie rambled on for way too long. There were so many unneeded scenes that could have made the movie only an hour and a half tops, two hours was just too much and felt redundant after a while. I mean it was funny for like the first hour and fifteen minutes then it just got annoying. Some scenes I did like though, like the condom scene, I laughed my head off at that part and the part where the drunk girl was driving and kept asking Andy if she was pretty.

Any way it was an okay movie, worth seeing once just to see it or just for some good laughs. I give it **1/2.

Are you kidding. If this film ran at 90 minutes, we'd lose all the heart & character development, if anything the 120 minute runtime made the film much more developed & actually made us feel for the characters
