What the heck is going on? What's with Kyle's new name and look? What happened? Is this another Parallax thing?

HELP!

I'm kinda lost, too, and I even read it.

Basically, Kyle's been on this major power surge for the last few months. He discovered he could make anything with his ring and the creations weren't even green. He once shined his ring on a book, told his girlfriend Jen to pick a page, and he read exactly what was on that page.

Also, he hasn't charged his ring since the Circle of Fire story, which came out August of 2000.

It turns out that when Parallax slamed into the sun, he left an energy residue. Well, that residue kept on growing, and eventually Kyle gets super-duper powers. So eventually Nero (the new dude with the yellow ring) shows up, and he and Kyle duke it out big time. Somehow the Spectre show him he could go back and not be GL, and somehow Kyle figures out that he's practically invincible and becomes Ion.

I dunno, you read it and figure it out.

Nero...

Does that strike anyone as VERY similar to NERON?

I'm not a regular reader of GL, but I happened to pick up that issue also. (And I'm glad The Guard started a thread about it on these boards so I won't have to wade through all of the crap on the DC Comics message boards regarding this.)

Anyway, has it been leaked that this is a permanant change for Kyle? I can't imagine that they would bring back Hal Jordan after all these years and the entire "Emerald Twilight," Parallax, Sun-Eater, hey-I'm-dead, hey-now-I'm-the-new-Spectre thing.

I CAN however see DC Comics wanting to bring the comic book universe more in line with the more widely viewed animated universe, so can it be that John Stewart is going to be the new #1 GL? It's been revealed that his disability is all in head, hasn't it?

Anybody know what's up?

Where is DC heading with this I wonder? Will John Stewart return due to his appearance in the JL animated series? I find Mr. Timm and company's take on the DC universe better than DC's own take on its own universe.

I was pretty sure that John Stewart was crippled for sure. And a glaring problem...the only remaining GL ring will only work for KYLE...

Well, considering Batman had a broken back not too long ago and Superman was actually DEAD, I don't think it would be that big of a deal to write up a creative solution to those two (minor by comparison) problems.

Good point.

Well, I believe Jen has one of the original GL rings (weakness to yellow, 24-hour charge), and they can replicate themselves. Or will Jen be the new GL? How will this be affected in JLA? Do I dare respond to hot rod's post about animated vs. mainstream? :D

Forgive my ignorance.

Jen=Jade?

It's either a really dumb stunt, or they want to bring back John Stewart for a while (to coincide with the mega-hot T.V. show).

Yes, as Toddman said, John Stewart found out a little while ago that his paralysis is psychological. I'm not a regular GL reader, so I don't know if he's on the route to solving this or anything.

I wonder if this could possibly explain the real story behind Parallax? I mean, I think that the Parallax story was pretty universally hated. It really didn't seem to make a whole lot of sense. Is it possible that there's some better explanation for Hal's madness that will confront Kyle? Hmmm....

Anyways, it could be interesting to see Kyle confront the past GLs..Hal as Spectre, maybe a returning GL John, and maybe even Alan and Jade thrown in?

It could be bad, it could be good. I'm not so quick to put down any idea, especially before I really know what it is. So I'll just wait and see what goes on. I wouldn't be at all surprised if John returned to the GL role. They did bring back Aquaman as a result of JL, so maybe JL is influencing the GL book too.

Ive noticed a pattern on DC books taking after animated series, Batman's costume change after TNBA, Superman's new style of art the past year or so resembling the toon, etc. Now at first I thought it was a way to bring Hal Jordan back after I read Green Arrow #8 and saw how these things can happen, but with the JL thing Im thinking that perhaps the rings power, an original one replicated by Jade, may be able to allow John Stewart to walk and stuff again, if his will is strong enough to do so. I havnt read the book for a few months so I don't exactly know his whole situation, but I remember him getting hurt. I know Guy Gardner died in Our Worlds at War so he's out, and Hal's still Spectre, Jade doesn't really have what it takes, so I think John will have to come in to play and maybe save Kyle, otherwise this will turn into something that ends witht Hal lecturing Kyle on power trips and what happened to him.

Yeah, sorry, Jen is Jade. She doesn't go by that anymore, 'cause her secret ID's been public for awhile, so I just got used to calling her Jen.

a growing trend in dc comics is to make everything overly complicated

Well, the problem is psychological, so psychotherapy could solve the problem. Also, hypnosis could potentially solve the problem, though hypnotic cures for those sorts of problems tend to wear off after a while. Ideally, he would see a psychologist who would be able to get to the root of his problem and help him resolve the issue in his past that is causing this paralysis. That would let him walk again.

Amen to that brother!

Get John and the TAS costume in that book ASAP!

As for Kyle, I love him but I'm afraid this stunt will probably doom him to lame-new-series status before he basically ends up as a 5th string DC cosmic character or just an annoying obtrusive element that lingers around the GL title.

I'm just wondering if Judd Winick was smoking funny cigarettes when he came up with Kyle's new codename! Heck, I have to wonder if he's been smoking funny cigarettes every time he sits down to write GL, because it's not nearly as good as his other books! :p

See, I really like Winnick's stuff on GL (and go find the Frumpy the Clown collection, you won't regret it). Back when Ron Marz was writing it, I just could not get into it, despite the fact that I love GL. But now, it's a must-read book for me. Ya gotta support Winnick for doing something like this on GL, with all the HEAT people and Kyle Rayner fans (whatever they call themselves).

You mean you have a different opinion on a comic book than I do? COMIC FAN POWERS ACTIVATE! SHAPE OF: FANBOY! FORM OF: CONFLICT!

Just kidding. ;)

And I've actually read Winick's other stuff like Frumpy and Barry Ween. I guess I was just expecting more crazy sci-fi action in GL (or at least Gorilla Grodd), since I've seen it in Barry Ween! :)

Well, c'mon, Barry Ween and GL are different ends of the spectrum (well, it seems like it, I've never actually read Barry Ween). And, c'mon, there's been a lotta crazy sci-fi stuff, almost all of GL has been focused on Kyle and his ring (well, besides the first seven issues which was GREEN LANTERN AND HIS LI'L BUDDY TERRY). And there was that whole deal with Oblivion awhile back...

Then I want to see Grodd! I've read Barry Ween, I know Winick can write giant genius gorillas! Make Mine Monkey! :D :bosko: :D

LOL Green Lantern--pardon me, ION--fighting Grodd? Doesn't seem like it'd take very long. But ol' Wally West tangled with Grodd recently in THE FLASH #178. Check it out, it's cool stuff.
