You know, I was watching Big Brother today, and it was Maggie's birthday, and Big Brother gave her a PSP as a birthday present, and she didn't have a clue what it was. Beau explained to her that you could use it to play games, and movies, and music. So, anyway, do most people actually know what the PSP is? I mean, I'd imagine Gameboy has name recognition even among people who don't play videogames, but does PSP have any name recognition among the non-gamer?

Honestly I don't think so....at least not yet. Whenever I play in public like at a fast food place, I get asked all the time what it is. Some people think its a new version of a gameboy, but others think its a black ipod lol. It will catch on after GTA releases and prob gets some mainstream press from the media (hot cofee backlash etc)

The kids sure know what it is. Last time I went out with it in public (quite a while ago) every child that walked by gawked at it or asked me "Is that a PSP?" and went on to tell their closest buddie about how cool it was. Yet I've only been asked twice by the older crowd what it was and they immediately lost interest after I explaned it.

Sort of. The mainstream generally won't know the difference between a PSP and a PS2, or between a PSP and a GBA. It's all just "that thar game thingy."

I have yet to meet anyone in my city that has a PSP...I do know about three people with DS's, though.
Playstation will register with a lot of people, but the acronym "PSP" still has a ways to go before it gets recognition like that.

I think that the PSP is gaining more recognition, but the DS has an unfair advantage in this realm due to the public's misconception that it's a Game Boy. Seriously, I have heard plenty of people refer to the DS as "Game Boy DS" or "that new Game Boy."

Hah! Not what Sony had in mind! It's the desired effect that Tobacco companies want...
Honestly though the PSP is certainly far from being in the same ditch that the other handhelds that competed against the gameboy were in...
I mean it has certainly kept appeal to warrent a large release of the UMD movie discs

It helps to have Sony Pictures to fall back on.

Is Sony going to be releasing more games for the PSP? I only see UMD movies getting more of a release and not enough games! I hope Sony hasn't decided to drop support for the PSP altogether just to focus on the PS3.

What do you mean? It's fairly obvious that Big Brother was paid by certain companies to give certain gifts to the players. Unless you mean they paid the players to advertise it, which wouldn't make any sense, since the player who got it didn't have any idea what it was until another player explained it to her.
i think many people know what the psp is, i mean i also get people that ask me what a gameboy is.....
its not as knowledgable as a gameboy but a lot of people do know what it is.
