I Just Saw the "Rebirth" again, At first I thought Bruce gave up because of his heart problem.

Then, I've noticed him looking shocked at the gun in his hand and dropping it to the ground.

I forgot the fact that Bruce HATES using Guns, because he would see himself as the person who killed his parents. Pulling the gun at the hood in desperation probably made him feel if he continued as Batman for long, he'll step out of his line of control.

Did I realise this too late? Or am I not making any sense?

I always thought it was because of the shame of dedicating his life to keeping other people from making that mistake. All that training, and it comes down to now, and he uses a GUN! He turns a gun, the one thing he feels is responsible for his ruined life, and he finds himself in the same position as the gunman who killed his parents. Also, he finds his whole life basically meant nothing at all, and he felt, why continue to be the Batman, if you no longer find yourself holding up to your own standards?

But heres my thing, ok maybe the suit did'nt have rocket boots, but was'nt it bullet proof, and very durable?
What was he worried about?

And now that you mention it...THAT was my most hated scene in the WHOLE BB series. It was just a mtter of me getting past that point to like the show. But as the episode went on, I remember myself continually saying..."Bruce would never do that". He's take the beating before picking up a gun.

And to be honsest among anything else, THAT is why I think they keep saying BB, is a POSSIBLE futue for BTAS. Because normally something like that just would'nt happen. And the fact it was just some petty crooks.

Myself, I thought that scene was absolutely brilliant. I was so stunned by how appropriate it was to the character that it took me a while to snap out of it. Batman hates guns... to him they're a cowardly way to give yourself power, without skill, honor or determination. This has been mentioned several times in the comics and the TV shows.

That scene STILL gives me chills whenever I watch it.

And don't forget that the unedited version of Return of the Joker adds a whole new meaning to the scene!

If I remember correctly the suit did have the rocket boots in that scene and nowhere has it ever been said that it's bullet proof. And while it is very durable remember he had not only just suffered what is quite possibly a major heart attack, he was also getting the snot beat out of him by thugs with huge wrenches.

Add all that up and my take is that his self preservation instinct took over. I mean here is the Batman, a man who has spent his entire life dedicating himself to total control and in one moment of panic let his instincts take over. That probably horrified him just about as much as having picked up the gun, which of course has an entire symbolism attached to it just to Batman.
