I strongly suggest that everyone reads today's Freeplay column (http://www.gamespot.com/features/freeplay/index.html) at Gamespot.
I think that this guy hits it right on the head. People today can't get past a game or company's image. It's shameful, really. Also, gamers percieve way to many things about others. This is one of the best columns i've ever read.

But I look forward to the time when it's treated like an actual industry and not like the latest fad. It's definitely the responsibility of the developers and the media to usher in the mature age of gaming, and when they do, I promise you'll see less of a focus on who's buying them and more of a focus on what's actually being bought. There isn't a single branch of the entertainment industry that isn't driven by image today. Unless I'm misunderstanding him, he seems to be suggesting that the game industry is unique in the fact that it hasn't matured to a point where image isn't important. If anything, it has matured to a point where it does matter, as it does in all other entertainment industries.

The idea that you are what you play is prevalent in our cruel community.People are equally stereotyped by what kind of music they listen to or what kind of movies they watch. There may not be as many pointless message board posts about it, but it does happen all the time.

I agree with the guy's observations, and I agree that it's annoying, but it's neither a unique or unexpected result of gaming's growing popularity.
