View Full Version : Can They Say Jesus Now?

Last night I saw the episode of ATHF in which they refer to Jesus as "Geewhiz," and it reminded me of when AS refused to air some production (I forgot which one) because it had the J-word back in the day. Is that ban lifted, or is Jesus still a naughty word?

Jesus is only prohibited when used as an exclamation. The instance you're thinking of is probably the times when they mute Farnsworth's exclamations of "Sweet Zombie Jesus!" on Futurama. However, they've always been allowed to refer to Jesus in other contexts (Family Guy: Is this the blood of Jesus? This guy must've been wasted all the time!)

They can use it as an "exclamation" through some clever wording. For instance, in one episode of Family Guy, God was lighting a woman's cigarette with lightning, which sets her on fire. God immediately yells, "Jesus!" and a second later Jesus walks in and says, "Yes?"
Other than that...nope.

There was an episode of ATHF where Shake kills the TV again, and Frylock asks him where he thinks the replacement TVs keep coming from. Meatwad says "Santa Claus?" and Shake says "Jesus?"

Is that ban lifted, or is Jesus still a naughty word? You're thinking of Rejected, which, due to the phrase "Sweet Jesus!", would only have been allowed to air with a TV-MA rating, and they weren't allowed to do that.
These days, they have done a few TV-MAs (though their purpose/necessity has been debatable). Still, they'll probably never air Rejected simply because they've been hurt too many times before. They might be able to, though.
It's not just Adult Swim, though; it's a general "not without a TV-MA" rule. There have been a few slips, and no one's really sure why. For example, the FOX airing of that Futurama episodewas allowed a "Sweet Zombie Jesus!" But that was a while ago; maybe the rule just wasn't enforced as often back then. Because these days it seems that Adult Swim is more edgy than FOX, when you compare Family Guy airings.

Did FOX air that line?
If so, would this be one of those rare instances in which Adult Swim edited something that FOX aired uncut? Usually it's the other way around.

They can't say Jesus' name in vain, but according to Aaron McGruder they can say ******.

You're right, it was Rejected and not Futurama that she was probably thinking of.
Rejected is quite possibly the funniest short subject I've ever seen. It's a real shame that Adult Swim never got to air it.

It was a while ago, though (I mean, it was that far-far away time when FOX aired Futurama), so standards may have changed. Or it's just some strange network anomaly or loophole... who knows.
I personally still wonder why Professor Frink is allowed to say "Jesus, Mary and Glaven!" in a clearly exclamatory context in "Last Tap Dance in Springfield".
They can't say Jesus' name in vain, but according to Aaron McGruder they can say ******.Which makes me wonder if it'll be TV-MA. Anyone know yet? If the show is TV-14, I can't imagine the S&P handing the battle over like that before the show's even on the air. Is it because Aaron McGruder's black? I feel like they wouldn't take that into account.

Isn't the line "Sweet Zombie Jesus!" unedited on the TBS airings?

No one knows yet. Its airtime however is 11 PM.

Move it what? Move it Zombie Jesus? Yeah, I've always wondered what that line was.
Language barriers for cable television are always just arbitrary, since the FCC regulations do not apply. I've yet to understand why even PG-rated movies can sometimes drop an S-bomb or a "God" with a "Damnit" placed immediately next to it and yet even TV-14 and some TV-MA cable shows aren't allowed that luxury. But, as Chapelle's Show teaches us, you can say "the n-word." Many many times, at that.

You know, in syndication, I've heard Reverend Lovejoy say "Sweet Jesus!" on The Simpsons at a TV-PG rating. Networks standards are so weird.

I remember hearing about the word kraut being edited out of Oblongs on Adult Swim, but kraut has 5 letters, not 7...I don't know of any seven letter swears...

Definitely not bleeped. I very specifically noticed it.
Some FOX affiliates apparently didn't bleep it either. But Cartoon Network doesn't have affiliates, so... *shrug*
