I mean the entire concept of him getting drugged and kidnapped and then being forced to fight doesn't really seem to work. It worked for Battle Royale, but not really for this. It came off as "unheard of worst case scenerio that nobody would beleave"...

In the old days it was common practice for armies to build their ranks by abducting drunks.

I mean there is indoor plumbing

But there are still mercenaries in the service of foreign governments around the world, mostly in Africa I believe. It's not impossible to believe that some are not voluntary. Or at least it's not too much disbelief to suspend. And remember the series takes place around 1980.

Ah, well the games were based off the original manga and OAV. I've got two on my computer.
