Individual stations that used to purchase the Warner Bros pre- or post-1948 syndication packages always had the option of editing the cartoons as they saw fit.

In New York for example, the endings of "Fresh Hare" and "Goofy Groceries" were cut 40 years ago the same way as they are on Cartoon Network today, but back then, if New York took offense, maybe Boston, Chicago or Dallas didn't care any those same cartoons would air uncut.

ABC and CBS edited their cartoons differently, because they had to deal with a national audience. So their edits were more severe because they had to worry about the sensabilities (and possible protests) from places like New York, where problems were more likely to occur.

CN is in the same boat -- they edit for a national audience and therefore cut out anything they think might offend anybody (even, in some cases, if it only offends people whose main goal in life is to be offended and garner some publicity for themselves by being offended in front of newsmen or TV cameras).

thanks for the reply but now it brings me to 2 questions

1.who determens what 'good' and what not for broadcast

2. why does differnt networks edit the same cartoon differntly

(ex. Hoppy Go Lucky on ABC The footage gone was the part with Sylvester saying, "Yup, I'm left hold the bag." but cbs cuts
Sylvester strikes Benny, the huge, stupid cat, over the head with a sledgehammer but cn airs it uncut)

thanks

The networks censor differently because there are different censors at each network (Department of Standard and Practices, to be more percise). Two different censors may both agree that scene A should be cut, but one censor may think scene B is K while the other cuts that one, too.
