I stumbled across this one at:

http://www.sltrib.com/2001/jun/06032001/arts/102490.htm

It is mostly about Disney's Song of the South, but it does mention June Bugs...and like every single other news story, rehash those one-line descriptions from the Wall Street Journal (such as the now infamous -- Bugs calls an Eskimo a "big baboon"!)

It also includes this quote:

In Bugs' first feature film, 1996's "Space Jam," the one Looney Tunes character not on Michael Jordan's team was Speedy Gonzales, a character offensive to many Latinos.

Actually, Speedy *is* on the team in Space Jam. He just doesn't speak (neither do some other teammates, like Beaky Buzzard). And there it is: Speedy is considered "offensive to many Latinos".

When I had an e-mail conversation with the editor of Hispanic Online awhile back, I asked if they were aware of anybody or any group who found Speedy offensive. Here was the reply: "I have not heard anything negative about Speedy, nor have I come across any negative reaction to the character. On the contrary, people like myself, who grew up watching him, all remember him fondly. He evidently remains immensely popular abroad."
