Here's an idea I just thought of for an hour long Toonheads:

TOONHEADS: THE DEPRESSION-AGE CARTOONS:
[Clips and Commentary]
"Betty Boop's Rise to Fame" (Fleischer/Betty Boop)
"Bosko's Fox Hunt" (WB/Bosko)
"Bars and Stripes" (Columbia/Krazy Kat)
"Oswald the Plumber" (Universal/Oswald the Lucky Rabbit)
"Hot Dog" (Fleischer/Bimbo)

(Of course you may have to get the rights to all of these, but it'll be worth it!)

Well, what do you guys think (including Mr. GAK too)

ALL PUBLIC DOMAIN CARTOONS

Cool idea, Pietro! Here are my idea hour-long episode.

THE EVOLUTION OF BUGS BUNNY
"Porky's Hare Hunt" - black and white
"Elmer's Pet Rabbit"
"The Heckling Hare"
"Bugs Bunny Gets the Boid"
"Falling Hare"

Jeckyl and Hyde

The Case of the Stuttering Pig (Porky)
The Impaitent Paitent (Daffy)
Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Mouse (Tom & Jerry)
Dr. Jeckyl's Hide (Sylvester, Alf & Chester)
Hyde and Hare (Bugs)
Hyde and go Tweet (Sylvester & Tweety)

There's six in there, though the hour-long Toonheads usually airs only four or five. I guess they could toss out one of the two Sylvester cartoons, since that would leave the show with a different starring character(s) for each cartoon.

No offense guys, but, I was just trying to tell GAK about the Depression Cartoons special in general.

Well, in that context it's an interesting idea, but given the fact that Cartoon Network over the past few years has shown no inclanation to run any cartoons that are not either wholly owned by AOL Time-Warner, within their rights-holding domain or in the public domain, I think it's unlikely the last three cartoons on the list would get an airing, since CN would have to make special arrangements with the current rights-holders.

As far as the "classic" cartoons go, CN can air the following without any rights problems:

All WB cartoons
All MGM cartoons
All Paramount Popeye and Superman cartoons
All PD cartoons including the Paramount Betty Boops, which curently are the only PDs Cartoon Network does use.

They could also air the PD Screen Songs, Talkartoons, color Little Lulus and pre-1950 Noveltoons and any of the few odd PD Lantz and Terrtoon cartoons or those from other 1930s studios that are around. (I suppose if they really wanted to tick Disney off they could do a one hour Toonheads about cars in cartoons and include "Suzie, the Little Blue Coupe," which is also on the PD list).

Any possible Toonheads theme can be done with those limits in mind and you won't get into the problem of asking CN to go out and pay Vivendi-Universial or Sony-Columbia extra $$$ for the rights to air one or two of their shorts.

Mr. GAK, I think it is past time for this special to be made. CN has done excellent Toonheads specials over the past several months. IMHO, this special would serve as a great educational and entertainment resource.

How about also considering doing cartoons as part of American history, as part of Cable in the Classroom as well.

Now, if this was just put up as an IMPORTANT message!

I didn't make it important, but I guess I can leave it that way for a couple days. I also have my doubts that CN would ever go out of its way and pay extra money to get the rights to non-public domain, black & white cartoons. Oh well....

THANKS AGAIN JON!:D
You and J Lee are right, CN is probably NEVER
gonna show non-public domain cartoons, so I edited
my post and replaced those "tough-to-get" toons with PD toons.

That reminds me, Pietro, were you ever able to track down a copy of "Hot Dog"? Just curious...

Paramount on Parade

Stars of the Fleischer/Famous cartoons:

Betty Boop -- Betty in Blunderland (or any of the PDs, but please, no Pudgy)

Popeye -- Popeye the Sailor (no problem, AOL Time Warner owns it)

Superman -- Superman No. 1 (same thing, AOL Time Warner owns it)

Little Lulu -- Bargain Counter Attack (my favorite, but it could be any of the PDs)

Casper -- The Friedly Ghost (PD)

Baby Huey -- Quack A Doodle Doo (PD)

Usually the hour-long Toonheads only get five cartoons in, but since the Fleischer/Famous cartoons were slightly shorter than the Warners/MGM/Disney shorts, they might be able to squeeze in a sixth.

Depends on where they could find respectable-looking copies of the PD stuff.

UCLA, which I referred to earlier, is an option, but prolly not the cheapest...

Well, I know the PD of the "Quack A Doodle Doo" that most tapes use is taken off a Paramount Technicolor negative (as opposed to the UM&M or NTA Eastmancolor prints) and at least a couple of the Little Lulus in PD circulation also are off the Paramount negs. Those would certainly look just as good as some of the worst of the dubbed versions currently in rotation. As for Casper, well, a good copy of one of the PDs may be out there somewhere.

The Popeye and Superman cartoons the CN has are in good shape, and as for the Betty Boops, they've got a couple that look decent enough to air in prime time (and how many times have they aired the scenes from "Betty Boop's Ker-Choo" as part of the Groovies segment?)

Who's with me on this one fellas, I think it's about time we see a brand new cartoon channel that will have a huge selection of all types of cartoons and that will cater to the cartoon fan and for history buffs.

How bout it Viacom ?????

CN has shown a few public domain toons in the past. During their 100 Greatest Cartoons stunt a few years back, they showed Gertie the Dinosaur and Felix in Hollywood. And we have seen some toons that CN has paid for, like Rocky & Bullwinkle and Pink Panther, as well as many of the shows for Toonami. But overwhelmingly, they show just the stuff that they own.

Well, once I was VERY close to getting a 16mm print of it, but other wise I haven't been able to track down a copy.....

Hopefully, it'll happen. Right now, someone needs to start a bandwagon going here.

I like this idea, but I'd like all of the cartoons to have their original titles. There are some other memorable Paramount shorts in the Public Domain that could be shown too:

"The Stupidstitious Cat" (Debut of Buzzy the Crow)
"Naughty But Mice" (Prototype of the Herman & Katnip Series)
"Santa's Surprise" (Debut of Little Audrey)

Surprisingly, all of the titles I listed were released in 1947!
