Ocean Master (Aquaman's half-brother Orm) captured Aquaman and left him to be eaten by some vicious piranhas. It turns out that Aquaman can only communicate with the creatures of the sea, not necessarily command them, and so the piranhas chewed off his hand before he was able to get away.
In my opinion, the way it was done on JL was a lot more dramatic and made a heckuva lot more sense. ;)

Geez, the comic book sounds pretty lame in comparison. There was a reason from the heart for the loss in JL, but in the comics, it just sounded like a stupid plot gimmic they came up with over donuts. And here I thought it might be in my best interest to check out some Aquaman comics, but I think I will stick with Timm's version for now!

It's funny, that Aquaman issue is the ONLY comic I own of that series. I think I got it in some combo-pack someone gave me for Christmas.

Am I the only one who thinks its absurd that a bunch of small fish with bony teeth could bite through the flesh of someone who can withstand the pressure of about 15000 feet of water??

I thought the same thing Calhoun07, but then Later in the comic books, one of Batman's Plans to defeat Aquman, was to revert to the same way his hand was eaten off.
Which I personally think is an overkill, there are many other things the Bat could do to him.
But hand it to TAS to make a better story. If they did'nt who else would have?

....one more reason why I prefer the animated style over the others. :)

All I'm gonna say is DC really needs to get their act together with these comics. If people who love JL decide to check them out, and are disappointed, new readers will not stick around to see silly and lame story lines.

Orm wasn't in the comic story. It was another villain, Charybdris(spelling?). The battle scene was pretty intense and cool looking.

It was a villain named Charybdis (later the Pirahna Man). And the reason given for why Aquaman couldn't command them was because they are basically "all teeth."
Oh, and throwing Aquaman into a pool of pirahna wasn't one of Batman's ideas, it was just an idea tossed out by Grant Morrison in a Wizard interview. But he never did the story, so Batman's real idea was to psychologically scare Aquaman away from water (used in the infamous Tower of Babel storyline).

See, that what happens when you don't bother to re-read issues of Aquaman! All his villains start looking the same to me after a while. Thanks, superfriend and Karkull. :)
Stupid fish! :D

Very observant Karkull, I knew I read that somewhere before.
HOWEVER...wait a sec. How about this, JLA secret files and Origins. When Batman goes through each member, with ways to Destroy them. Batman does mention the pirhana's in there as well. He's never actually done it, but it is listed in the book as something he would consider.
