This was brought by the thread asking if Bruce Timm should try tackling Marvel Characters in Animation.

Recap: This comic was produced to resemble a 1960's Avengers Issue (The comic was written in 1999). It takes place after the formation of The Original Avengers (Avengers #1). The main enemy of the issue is Doctor Doom (though it's up in the air on whether or not they fought the real Doom or a Doombot). The issues full of 1960's style ads (some showing an actual classic comic, and some psuedo ads). Even a letter page with letters written from "kids" such as Kurt Besiek :).

The story was written by Roger Stern, and artwork by Bruce Timm (In Jack Kirby style).

Anyone opinions?

I loved this issue. Art wise, it's a very interesting attempt by Timm to try to do Kirby. He's been quoted, particularly in Comicology, to have failed miserably at aping Kirby here. I think he did a fantastic job channeling the energy and feel of Kirby, while working in the parameters of his usual style, and I wouldn't have had it any other way... because it offers what is very much a blueprint of how Timm would do these guys for animation.

Timm did a much better job aping Kirby in 'The World's Greatest Comic Book Magazine FF Anniversary issues', so if you're looking for more dead on Kirby, give that a look. That's not to say he didn't do a good Kirby in this Avengers issue... he did but it's certainly a different mix of ingredients, there's more cups of Timm here with a few healthy dashes of Kirby.

If you enjoyed this issue, then you might enjoy reading the first few Avengers issues like I did... it's a fun read, and you can see a lot of the homages Timm made. Again, this was a great exercise in seeing how Timm might approach these characters for animation.
