View Full Version : Family Guy "8 Simple Rules for Buying My Teenage Daughter" - Talkback

Mugen

Summary:

"When Peter runs up a tab at the local pharmacy, the only way out of paying the bill is to sell Meg to the owner’s son, Neil, who has been stalking her for months. But when Neil starts dating another girl, Meg becomes jealous and goes on the hunt to find a boyfriend of her own. Meanwhile, Stewie goes gaga over his hot new babysitter, Liddane."

A new Family Guy episode tonight at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. Sounds interesting.

Neil gets to OWN Meg (well, illegally) and he goes after ANOTHER girl? C'mon Neil, you're a nerd, use that brain of yours.....to get some morals and don't buy people. But if you are, you might as well do the wrong thing the right way :p

My own bad jokes aside, this could either be REALLY good or REALLY bad. Meg already had an episode were she sold herself out (a slightly-below average but okay episode), and she tends to be the butt of alot of jokes.

The teleporter thing was really cliché, but I'm trying to remember where it came from first.

Peter likes Rube Goldberg machines?

Teek

I believe that was a take off of Pee Wee's breakfast machine, if I remember right.

That puke thing was gross but pretty lol.

LOL at Pee-Wee's Big Adventure breakfast machine parody!
EDIT: And while the original PWBA scene was undoubtedly Rube Goldberg-inspired, this was definitely a parody of PWBA because it had the theme song.

Ahh, if it weren't for the few weeks of pre-emption Family Guy woulda beaten Robot Chicken to the Blind Date parody.

Ugh, that puke scene made me wanna puke.

"I can't believe Neil got a girlfriend."

"I can't believe I've been jipped out of $34,000."

"I can't believe it's not butter. Stay tuned, Family Guy will be right back."

I loved those lines.:D

Figures, Neil`s girlfriend has my favorite female name.

For some reason, Peter saying "Come back we`ll have mroe family guy after this" amde me laugh out loud.

Whoa, they finally directly referenced The Simpsons. I guess it takes some of the edge off, what with the B-plot being kind of similar to when Bart fell in love with the babysitter who had a boyfriend. Bart even wore a "Hef" robe like Stewie's wearing. Still more than different enough in execution, though.

The "Rube Goldberg" thing was the Machine that made breakfast in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. Even the music was accurate. Unfortunately it didn't go into detail like it did in the movie. Would've been funny to have made the breakfast and THEN shot Peter.

The puke thing was WAY WAY WAY too long and barely funny. Would've been funnier as a Dairy challenge (Gallon of milk in an hour)

The Herculoids joke with Gleep and Thundro (Yes that was the Rhino mutant's name on the show) was pretty funny.

The Nail gun excuse....my god...hilarious.

The Stewie tirade, I thought was good. Mostly cause I fit that entire tirade.

Kramer vs Preditor. Unexpected, weird, semi-funny.

I think this is the most Pop Culture reference laden episode of all of the family guy episodes that have aired (seasons 1-3 included)

HERCULOIDS!!! That was, without a doubt, THE most unexpected and nonsensical cameo in the history of the show.

The vomiting was completely pointless, boring, and disturbing. I guess that was the point.

The teleporter thing was really cliché, but I'm trying to remember where it came from first.

How could you forget The Fly?!

Now THAT is a GOOD puke scene. Those only work when the show is over-the-top anyway, and/or the animation/etc is simple enough or the atmosphere works (Like South Park being over-the-top and unrealisitc animation, or Team America being over-the-top and done with puppets) and of course the set-up has to be good. The writers of Robot Chicken (including Seth Green, famous comedian and VA of Chris) could take a page from this.

Wow, first Meg's really desperate and now SOLD herself? Sheesh.

The puke, no pie contest was greatness. Proabably the hardest I've ever laughed at FG.

Herculoids refrence with Glop or was that Glep?

Loved Stewie's rant about frat boys.

Meg/Jake, was another plus.

The breast touch after Ladoon was knocked out was perfect.

Lois as Mystique and Neil as Wolverine made this a classic.

I loved the rip at 'Everybody Loves Raymond,' the Breakfast Machine that shoots Peter instead of giving him brekfast, Meg defending herself when Peter tried to sell her to clear his tab, and Stewie's tirade.

The only thing I really had negative feelings for was the puking scene.

Still, this is the 2nd best episode of the season, behind 'North by North Quahog' (which, coincidentally, aired right after this episode)... probably the only one so far to come anywhere close to it.

"8 Simple Rules for Buying My Teenage Daughter" gets an 8 out of 10.

I didn't know if something else came before it.>.<;;;

Well, depends on which one you mean. The graphic 80's one with Jeff Goldblum is a remake of the original Vincent Price film, which had a bunch of other sequels and remakes in between.

I guess with the vomit scene I've become a victim of not knowing when they're doing a parody.

Its official: Family Guy has gotten out its recent slump.Whoa, they finally directly referenced The Simpsons. I guess it takes some of the edge off, what with the B-plot being kind of similar to when Bart fell in love with the babysitter who had a boyfriend. Bart even wore a "Hef" robe like Stewie's wearing. Still more than different enough in execution, though.A boy hitting on their babysitter is a cliche by now. (Although maybe Simpsons came up with it first. Anyone know?)Just to let you know that vomiting scene is from the movie Stand By Me.There's always some reference I don't get :p I don't understand 1/2 of the stuff in the first seasons (wether or not its a good thing I get most of the new stuff is a different story :px2)

By now everything else has already been said. Good to see FG back in the groove.

Many quotable lines tonight.

-Stewie: (mid-sentence) "Oop, just belched."
-Raymond: "I'm just tired, Debra. It's been nine seasons and I'm just too tired. Maybe you should just stop being a b*tch." (piano music)
-Stewie: "It's been two weeks. He's.... probably dead. Yep, definitely dead."
-Stewie: "So you know the lyrics to Mr. Plow, BIG DEAL, everyone else does!!!"
-Peter: "We'll be right back with more Family Guy right after this."
-Neil: "You haven't been EATING those suppositories, have you?"
Peter: "No I've been sticking them up my butt, OF COURSE I'm eating them!"
-Neil: "Oh jeez, she's bending it!"

Two flaws: More dignity down the toilet for Meg. Also, I didn't find the Herculoids thing funny at all. Otherwise, very funny. The best Stewie episode so far, no doubt.

GRADE: B+

I'm not sure, but he was already the mayor of a post apocalyptic town.

Carolina Red
07-10-2005, 09:31 PM
Yep, only he didn't have any competition when running for mayor of New Quahog.

The puke scene was great, I know some of you thought it was too long, but I found that to be so great...it's just like something you'd see in a Monty Python sketch. Or at least blood gushing out nonstop. And the greeting cards that they kept on getting were good too, neat that they were so specific. And at least they touched on the guy Stewie locked up at the end.

I would say that if you understood most of the pop stuff like I did then it would be one of the best of the new season. And if not, you can always go to a website to find out explanations. Then I bet you'd like it more.

Other favorite parts:
Everybody Loves Meg (but not Neil)
Brian looking for high schoolers
Breakfast machine
Lois' seduction (what a move :p )
Suppository abuse

-Stewie: "So you know the lyrics to Mr. Plow, BIG DEAL, everyone else does!!!"
Wow, all of a sudden I don't feel so special. They were right on target with that one, but what's with X-Men fans owning segways? Who can afford that AND thirteen titles a month?

I loved the references in this one, Herculoids, Pee Wee, it was great. And as an added bonus, they stuck to the story, too. They kinda left the boyfriend plot dangling, but I guess they thought it'd be funny to just kill him off. That didn't really work for me.

The puke thing was gross to look at, but I liked the sound effects when they were talking...maybe if I watched it with my eyes closed.

Okay, now that was a hilarious episode. The story was great, and it had some of the best gags ever:

-Everybody Loves Raymond parody
-the Pee-Wee breakfast machine joke (I laughed for 5 mintes)
-Herculoids refrence
-Neil and Lois dressed as X-Men (I loved the details like the Wolverine "claws")
-Stewie's amazingly acurate rant on frat boys
-the puking scene

Of course my favorite joke of the night was Brian as Wooderson from Dazed And Confused. I think that's the hardest I've laughed this entire season, and I nearly choked to death on my Mountain Dew. Classic.

Great ep loved it. Though they should have waited a little longer to play after what happend with those boys a few weeks ago. There are going to be a few unhappy parents in NJ.
But great ep all around and Lois was hot as Mystique too bad they didn't show her buttcrack. By the way have they ever shown her butt and any female butt on FG I know they love showing man butt just like on Simpsons.

By the way have they ever shown her butt and any female butt on FG I know they love showing man butt just like on Simpsons. I won't comment further on your post, but in regards to your inquiry, yes, they've shown female butt on FG, specifically Lois' butt. The most prominent instance I can remember was when Lois & Peter were nudists-for-a-day to try to make Meg's nudist boyfriend feel welcome. They've also done it on The Simpsons, possibly more than once but I specifically remember that they cut to some foreign country (Sweden?) and there was a nude female crossing guard. Didn't quite get the joke, but it confirmed that yes, they can show full rear nudity of either sex on animated FOX sitcoms.

That was my biggest laugh this season. Good episode overall.

"Ha! I got your hat! Take that, hatless! Now go back to the quad and resume your hackey sack tourney! I’m not gonna lie down for some frat boy bastard with his damn Teva sandals and his Skoal bandits and his Abercrombie and Fitch long-sleeve open-stitched crew-neck henley smoking his sticky buds out of a soda can while watching his favorite downloaded Simpsons episodes every night! Yes, we all love Mr. Plow! Oh, you’ve got the song memorized, do you? So does everyone else! That is exactly the kind of idiot you see at Taco Bell at 1 in the morning. The guy who just whiffed his way down the bar skank ladder."

Good episode.

Big improvement, though they still kinda dump on meg alot, didn't someone say this would be the "Ultimate Meg bashing episode" a while ago?

The Meg plot really didn't do much for me, but most of the sub stuff had me in stiches

The gun shot breakfast maker - laughed my ass off
The whole (excima?) barfing scene .. I don't know why I laughed so hard and long at it, but... I did...

The Hurculoids thing.... kind of out of place, Maybe if they used Rosie the robot or Wilma flinstone or something if
they really needed a reference.

One flaw with this episode... they REALLY went nuts with the cut aways this week.

I guess with the vomit scene I've become a victim of not knowing when they're doing a parody. As was I (I'm not familiar with Herculoids either, so there was ANOTHER confusing scene). Apparently the rules on puke have changed at Fox....in the past when people have vomited, they always ducked and did it off-camera. When Brian did it in "Road to Rhode Island," there was a little bit left, but it was colored blue to pass it off as spit.

"2 Stupid Dogs" is the first cartoon I know of to show puke ("Cornflakes" was the episode, and I'd tell you what happened at the end of that scene, but this is already getting gross enough.)

Finally, an episode where Stewie gets to blast his rhetoric like only he can! That whole shout-down to the babysitter's boyfriend when he discovered him was great. Maybe there hasn't been as much Stewie because of the looming three-parter and expanded movie.

And I think Meg-bashing is funny. I know I'm alone....

Commercials comment: the unrated cut of Dodgeball? Is that supposed to interest me?

Eh, I felt the episode wasn't very good. I didn't like the beginning because everything felt so disjointed, like they didn't know what to do next. Things started running a little more smoother later on, though. There were a few humorous moments, but overall there wasn't much that was funny in this episode.

I give 8 Simple Rules for Buying My Teenage Daughter a C-.

"You wouldn't believe how hard it was to find that card in English". Yes, Pepperidge that was the funniest line ever.

I too enjoyed Stewie's rant on frat boys and I REALLY appreciated The Simpsons ref with all the stuff Al Jean has been spewing about Family Guy. It was a nice peace offering in my opinion.

The Pee-Wee's breakfast machine was the greatest thing ever.

Herculoids thing was too random and not particularly funny, although I did get a smile out of it.

I can't believe it's not butter was too self referencial for it's own good.

I laughed pretty hard at the puking scene even though it went on for too long. I'm sure however that it was NOT a parody of Stand By Me as the situation (other than pie being involved) was totally different. In SBM Lard Ass eats eggs and Milk of Magnesia before he enters a pie eating contest. His plan is to puke when he gets too full causing EVERYONE at the contest and in the audience to puke as well as revenge for being called Lard Ass. In FG it was simply a contest to see who could avoid puking longest. And if it were TRULY a parody of SBM the vomit would have been purple. (The pie was blueberry, not apple).:ack: I think people are looking for parody connections where none exist. It seemed to me to just be lowbrow toilet humor that we were supposed to be shocked at how long it went on for.

A really good episode and yes, Family Guy is starting to get out of it's slump. ****.

I forgot to mention the Primetime Glick parody. They nailed that. "Now my wife tells me that you're not a very good actor, and of course I believed her. What's your response to that?"

Commercials comment: the unrated cut of Dodgeball? Is that supposed to interest me? Not really. Unless you don't already own the previous Dodgeball DVD, don't buy this. All they add is one minute of extra footage, and of that one minute Post 5,000!!! , only 30 seconds of it is "unrated" material that would have gotten the movie an "R'- the rest is filler material. Not worth buying it back.

Oh man, I laughed so hard at the breakfast machine bit I couldn't breathe and I fell off my couch. They got the music right! Yes!! I haven't laughed that hard since that thing about the firetrucks. God, now I want to go watch Pee Wee's Big Adventure again.

Stewie was awesome in this ep.

"You know Meg, if you were to commit suicide right now it'd get you a full page in the year book. Just something to think about."

"And here's you iPod so you can listen to the Streaks while you gasp for air!"
*tied up guy mumbles through the gag*
"Oh yes, the Strokes. Sorry."

"Oh thank god you're home Lois! A bunch of teenagers came and they were doing mary joo wana and heroeeeeen and excema!" (sorry if I'm misquoting)

I think the barfing scene was brilliant. I mean, it was funny for a bit, then it got too long, but then it got so absurdly long that it was funny again.

This episode seem funny and weird. First Meg was a slave to Neil, and not the kind I thought she would be. Stewie hitting on his babysitter and framing her of drug use was funny and killing off the Babysitter BF was funny never happened in any cartoon in which invovled the crush on the sitter, especially the line that took place during the credits. He forgot about him and who's car was that again, Brain's? Peter doesn't know what a tab was and abusing those meds seem to be Peter. I wonder what happened to his inside for abusing those meds? The Raymond with his wife about ready to gut him after Meg interuption, and the Breakfast maker scene with the gun was funny. I say it deserves an 8/10.

Ironically enough, in the October 2004 issue of EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthly), the "Grudge Match" article, which compares stuff to stuff (like PSP vs. Reading or Burnout 3 vs. a burnout), compared Alien vs. Predator vs. Kramer vs. Kramer.
Just some random trivia.

Great episode, by the way. The Pee-Wee parody ruled, as did Everybody Loves Raymond and Peter's "I can't believe it's not butter" routine. And to top it all off, we got "North by North Quahog" afterwards!

I'm just now realizing how insightful the Everybody Loves Raymond parody was. Because the 9th season, specifically, wasn't too far from that. Everyone seemed either tired of doing the show or just angry and mean; the charm was totally gone.

As was I (I'm not familiar with Herculoids either, so there was ANOTHER confusing scene)

Used to be shown CONSTANTLY on Cartoon Network along with the original Space Ghost, Birdman, and dozens of less popular HB action toons such as Shazan, Dinoboy, Mightor, Frankenstein jr, the Impossibles...I forget the rest. But I also consistently forget that not everyone had the old CN like I did. It just randomly showed up one day on our basic cable when it was only a few months old.

Yet another great episode. Family Guy is pulling themselves out of the mudd and are getting back into their old groove. Plus the continuity with the brief mention of Brian's car gets an extra plus for me becuase Seth usually leaves details like that out.

The best gags were the Herculoids, Breakfast Machine, and Everybody Loves Ramond.

Third-best episode of the season. Like many episodes this season tend to do, I feel that the plot felt kind of disjointed in the 2nd half (As did a lot of the jokes), but the first half was excellent.

I thought the puke scene would have been awful if not for the great dialogue. Stewie's lines kind of sum out how someone feels during a particularly bad vomiting fit.
