I found this talkback through a link in the Batman: Year One talkback, so I hope no one minds if I add a couple comments.
Out of all three sidekick origin stories written by Chuck Dixon and Scott Beatty, this one is my least favorite. It's not bad, but it's just not up to par to what the other two brought to the table. It was great seeing Scott McDaniel return to Robin but I really don't think he was fit for the story. The other two sidekick origin stories used these great, underground artists to tell a story that fit in with the style of Batman: Year One, but here the artist overwhelms the writer.
It is a good story, but I think it would have benefitted by a more quiet, toned down artist. It's a fun retelling, though, and it has some great action sequences. Recommended.

Was that a joke? Yeah, Nightwing Year One is kinda subpar (especially in light of the way Robin Year One was done), but Dixon's run on Nightwing is more or less the best that its seen.

No it wasn't a joke. Dixon's Nightwing is not the same Nightwing who lead the Titans for many years. Dick resolved his daddy issues with Bruce before he became Nightwing, however, Dixon's Nightwing not only had daddy issues but manifested an irrational fear of Two-Face of all people. The Titan's Nightwing has a brilliant strategist and a world-class detective, Dixon's Nightwing wasn't too bright, had no strategy beyond flipping all over the place, and was outshined by Robin as a detective (yeah, Tim was smart but during Dick's stint as Batman, it seemed that Tim outshined Dick at every opportunity). I could go on and on but suffice to say, Dixon's Nightwing was dumbed down from the Nightwing in the Titans (we won't count the final years of the Titans because that was a all-around low point for the Titans). Frankly, putting Nightwing in the Bat Office was the worst thing ever to happen to the character and Chuck Dixon, as chronicler of his adventures during most of the time gets most of the blame (yeah, Devin's Nightwing is bad but I look at him as a logical extension of the Dixon Nightwing).
At least the real Nightwing is seen in The Return of Donna Troy and if rumors are true (although the ball has been dropped many times and I really have no faith in DC right now) Nightwing may regain the prominance he had during the Titans era. I'm tired of crybaby Nightwing.
