Why did they film the opening theme and bridging sequences in black and white while the closing credits were filmed in color?

They were originally in color, but Cartoon Network does not have copies of them except in B&W (and when the show debuted, most viewers and many independent stations were still incapable of broadcasting in color -- only NBC, CBS and to a lesser extent, ABC, and their larger affiliates were starting to dabble in color television broadcasting in 1960.

Big city independents and network stations in smaller cities that were most likely to carry the H-B shows usually broadcast in black and white, even if the source material was avialble in color, so some prints were made of the originals in B&W.

Thanks J. Lee. I assume the same thing goes for the other show segments at cartoonnewtork.com.

Shouldn't Hanna-Barbera have the original negatives for these things? And are color copies known to exist?

BTW, I also love the opening for the Huckleberry Hound Show, even if it is just one really long Kelloggs commercial...
