After watching random episodes of both english and japanese yu gi oh (4kids version) Im still baffled why all theese plans and stuff have to be stelled through dueling? why does Dartz need to defeat the guys in a duel to steal their souls? or is he just being a very good sport?

But in the other cases, Marik is just stupid. Dub Marik is a bit more intellegent (he acually has some form of motivation to defeat the pharoh in a duel, instead of hiring a sniper to murder him). Pegasus also could have just stolen the freakin' puzzle. (If some random street punk can steal it, he sure as heck can)

So there really is no reason other than wanting to "play fair".

Not sure if the Japanese version is the same, but I beleive I remember hearing something in the English that said that they could steal the puzzle, but the powers wouldn't work for them unless they beated Yuugi/Yami in a duel. And technically, I don't think they even said "fair" duel.

Everyone in shonen has to learn that ability is strongest when it is developed out of friendship. Friendship with other people, things possessing your body, cards, cutesy monsters, beyblades, etc. ("You'll never beat me, Beysharks! Me and my beyblade are bestest friends! I even buy it ice cream and pocky and ice cream and takoyaki!"

Bakura stole Pegasus's eye, and it still worked as part of "all seven".

So in the end:
They just think it's funny to humiliate them, even if it gets in the way of their mission.

Because villians need money to fund their evil schemes. And signing a contract to play a random card game or two pays them much more than robbing a bank or participating in a fighting tournament.

YGO does tend to draw things out. I mean, Dungeondice anyone?

The threat of another store selling games? *gasp* You mean, no other store besides Grandpa's sold games before Otogi's opened? And then it's all about Yugi fighting to free Joey from that kinky dogsuit, promoting DDM, and Otogi whining about Pegasus ("And he took me to Neverland and said I looked like his wife if she had been a gothy Japanese teenage boy blah blah blah and was going to sell my game."). Anyway, Yugi wins and then *presto* another gameshop isn't so bad, blah blah blah, Yugi has a new fwiend.

what? those are weird explanations.

I was mostly wondering why Dartz has to duel yugi and seto before he steals their souls.

Plot contrivance. I think it's more that it has to be done throuigh that method...ie the way the the oricalcos(sp) seal works is that the user has to risk their own soul, in exchange for the opportunity to take anothers, hence, the only way to decide between the two is a challenge of some sort, and since it's Yu Gi Oh, it just so happens to be Duel Mon, however, this would make sense with it being a popular game, within theYu Gi Oh universe.

It had an evil clown, and people burning each other's faces off. :D

And the anime let things go with a dogsuit and a game tutorial. Figures. Man, I'm glad the manga comes out monthly now
