According to www.askmen.com, in a listings of the 10 best comic heroes, Batman is the 2nd best hero created, bested only by the wall crawling Spider-Man. This is the site's description on what make's Batman great:

Bob Kane and Bill Finger created Batman in 1939. Kane wished to create a "sinister good guy" but struggled to convince readers why a hero could display such sinister, dark and at times irrational tendencies. In the background, Batman's setting was gloomy. At the forefront, Batman's character was even darker.

Seeking to justify how a superhero would lash out so violently at the bad guys, the authors made Batman's alter ego Bruce Wayne suffer a traumatic episode when he was only 8. Witnessing his parents getting brutally assaulted before his eyes scarred the young Bruce and formed Batman's deep desire and convictions.

The grownup Wayne was a wealthy industrialist and natural play..boy who used his extensive wealth and vast resources to fight against the forces of evil. Unlike most superheroes, Batman was more interested in defeating evil than he was in seeing good prevail. Kane and Finger effectively gave Batman carte blanche to narcissistically inflict pain and destruction at the source of his wrath.
