It's official: the boxing career of 'legend' and infamous ear-biter Mike Tyson is over after losing to Irish journeyman Kevin McBride by TKO in the sixth round.
McBride said that he was going to 'shock the world', which he did, but I must say this (I apologize if this is gloating):
I knew it all along.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I didn't see any way Tyson was going to win this one, and i'm not a boxing fan to much of a degree. He was outmatched in height, weight and reach, plus McBride used the common way to defeat Tyson: just outlast him and he'll collapse (The Tyson-in-Tokyo look according to ESPN).

Well, as soon as I get my Mike Tyson's Punch-Out cartridge, I'll give him one final KO.
Well... okay, the guy was slightly certifiable, but sure interesting. One of the few boxing matches my family ever ordered did have an ear being bitten off...

I can't say I'm surprised, considering how quickly he went down to another no-name just about a year ago.
I've never been that big of a Tyson fan, nor have I been a very big boxing fan either. I do sorta feel bad for him, since I don't see him lasting too long after this. I'm also curious as to what this means for the sport of boxing in general, as he was one of the very few guys that non-boxing fans knew by name (mostly due to his tendency to end up in the headlines). When I was a kid, I remember fights on HBO being a HUGE deal. That doesn't seem to happen any more.

I never was a boxing fan but I pretty much know that Mike Tyson bit off Evander Holyfield's ear. I think everyone knows about that incident, though.

Tyson has said he doesn't care if he slips into obscurity or poverty or anything anymore, because in his words "I already made it, man, I felt it. I got there, I won!" It wasn't in response to this though...it was in response to the fact that one of his ex-wives was suing him blind.

I can't tell what time you guys have posted (what with time zones and all), but it seems that this indeed was the end of Tyson's career... after the fight, he announced he's retired from boxing.
Which makes my Tyson-bitten carrot stick TWICE as valuable on eBay!!!

And now he can fade into Bolivia if I remember correctly.

Tyson hasn't been the same since his jail time, and I feel his career officially went down the crapper with the ear incident.
I kinda had a feeling he'd go out that way.
To be honest, Tyson didn't lose the fight. He was winning 3-2 going into the sixth round and was looking pretty sharp. McBride on the other hand looked like crap.
The thing is, Tyson wanted to go for the heavyweight title. If he couldn't take out McBride in 3-4 rounds, there's no way he could have competed with a Klitschko (God I bastardized that) or Ruiz. So in the 6th he basically just gave up, even though he could have still fought and probably would have won. At least he's not crazy anymore. Maybe now he can get some advertising deals with, I don't know, McDonalds? Tyson chicken?

Good, he sucked! When he said he'd murder and pulverize that guy two years ago (don't know) he lost in second minute of first round by knock out! Didn't even make it 3 minutes!
And I think he's speech impaired, on press conference before the match I couldn't understand one thing he said. He was laughing like an imbecile.
They say to be a legend you have to be dead, well he's been dead a long time. Whoever goes bankrupt from a millionaire and starts biting people's ears off isn't supposed to have any fans, and those who liked him from time he was good should find another row model. The worst thing is, unlike in wrestling, boxing is indeed very real, so if someone sucks, it's for a reason. What's with that gnarly (spider web?) tat on his head? He looks like a lunatic.
I'm not a boxing fan, I don't have a favorite boxer, but as of this day I finally don't have the least favorite any more either. I bet last we'll hear of him for some time will be on tonight's Late Night, before he commits a suicide or something to get attention again.

Frankly, I've never cared about Tyson, so this is good news to me. Maybe now we won't have to hear about him every two years. Of course, it could all be a ploy and have him in the ring again in two years.
I don't think some of you realize just how smart Tyson is. After his jail time, he knew he wasn't the best boxer in the world and would have trouble making it back to the top. In most sports, and athlete like that would never get press coverage, never be heard of. But will all of his outlandish comments and ring activity, this guy was constantly in the news. How else do you think an aging fighter at the tailspin of his career got 5 million dollars to fight a nobody? He knows he's worth more as an entertainer than as a fighter, and his actions dictate so. Also, just as Mog said, he was winning on 2 of 3 scorecards going into that last round, so he hardly "sucked", as andyboy put it (also, you might want to fix your spelling and grammar errors before you make posts pointing out the faults in someone's speech and referring to them as an "imbecile").

He's finally retiring? 'Bout time. He was pretty much the only "big name" boxer from the 1980s still in the ring. Then again, he's the only big name boxer from the 80s who's filed for bankrupcy in the past few years because he lost dozens of millions of dollars god-knows-where.

And how can you call someone who loses millions of dollars and bites people's ears off "smart"? That isn't "entertaining" either.

There are far too many list, but I will address your other opinions. Smart is relative. There are scientists that could split the atom, but don't have social skills or common sense. Tyson is smart at what he knows how to do, which is entertain. Realistically, his biting of Holyfield's ear probably prolonged his career by years. If he doesn't do it, he loses to Holyfield twice and drops out as a realistic contender for the title and out of the public eye. However, this move puts a video clip of the incident on ESPN every day for weeks and is national news. Everyone wants to see him fight again, to see what he'll do next. It's pure genius! Ethically it's probably not a good move, and it's not something I would have done, but on an entertainment level it's a classic. That moment, along with the Ron Artest melee in the NBA this year will probably go down as two of the most bizarre (and entertaining) sports incidents EVER. Also, Tyson lost a good portion of his money to rather shady tactics by Don King. Some of this was later recovered in a lawsuit, but how much King actually took is under debate. No denying it though, the 400 million Tyson lost over the course of his career is a huge amount. That people are still even talking about him is a testament to how big of an entertainer he was; most sports fans today couldn't even tell you who the current heavyweight champion is.

As far as I'm concerned, Tyson's career has been over long before he even bit off Holyfield's ear.

Love him or hate him, people know that Tyson is/was a major performer. I agree that he put up a good fight before going down after six rounds. Iron Mike basically gave up at the end, saying that he didn't want to fight anymore. The man's career is done. I truly believe that Saturday's bout was it. I kinda feel bad for him in a way (though I hated a lot of the garbage Tyson was involved in). I'm glad that he's calling it quits, though.

It's also a reflection of the sad state of affairs that boxing in general. Tyson is probably the most recongnized name in Boxing to the causal fan.

I read it a paper today that it was $300 million. Also, I thought King tried to say that it was the people around Tyson that swindled his money and not him. I wonder what he'll do next. Back to wrestling perhaps? Maybe commentating boxing matches. Wouldn't that be fun to hear.

Back to wrestling perhaps? Not likely. He's not big enough anymore to generate the amount of interest long-term compare to the amount of money he would want.

I wonder if Tyson ever finished off that bucket of pig's ears yet...:rolleyes2
