Disney corporate history is full of moments like this. Seemingly small pivot points that ultimately had a huge impact on the company, significantly altered Disney's destiny. Like what would have happened if -- instead of starting up Touchstone Pictures (So that Disney would then finally have a way to release adult-oriented material) -- the company had done what Ron Miller had originally wanted to do back in 1980. Which was to buy the then-hugely-financially troubled 20th Century Fox studios.
Now imagine that: Instead of just being the corporation who has "Star Tours" in its theme parks, Disney could have actually been the company that (through Fox) could have released the "Star Wars" movies to theaters, the two trilogies on videos & DVDs. What sort of impact would an aquisition like that have had on the Walt Disney Company's future?
Oh good gravy, the world would be so worse off it wouldn't be funny.
First, the subject of Star Wars....and Lucas's distribution fee deal. Which might have sat well with the Eisner of 1984, but not the Eisner of 1994 and beyond. Disney would have found a way around it, and then started producing.....STAR WARS DIRECT-TO-VIDEO MOVIES! Lucas, of course, would have no say in what went in such things...driving him to cut off all ties with Disney-Fox altogether. Disney-Fox would still own Star Wars, and instead of three Lucas-made prequels, we'd get one Star Wars film every two years, and if you can believe it, even MORE merchandising. The latest Star Wars film would have starred Raven and a digitally reduced Lindsay Lohan.
If Disney also owned Fox, it's less likely there would have ever been a Fox network. Meaning The Simpsons would have never aired. Meaning the animation revolution that followed would have never happened, meaning....among many other things, there would not be a Toonzone.net!
Chew on THAT for a while....
