View Full Version : Character Inclusion

I dont know if this has been mentioned be4, as this is my first time on the JL board. Anyways, I have noticed that Martian Manhunter, Superman and the Green Lantern have been on all the episodes, while Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Hawkgirl have been rotating. What's up with that? I know Superman is probably most well known, but Batman is up there too. I wish they would include all the characters in every episode, all though it would be hard to do things like have Batman do stuff in space because he is a human. Just wondering

i think as the series goes on we will see a lot more "worlds finest" type of action than the big teams
and as it stands consider this: Superman is the heart of JL and the MM is the soul-- they almost have to be in most eps
as for GL well its made sense to have him around the past few eps (considering IBN was focused on him, and TEB had a war/military focus to it.)
i personally hope we see more Flash action, but hey bats is cool too

the only thing is that I am a huge Batman fan, so I wanna see him in them as much as possible, but oh well. They are all cool

Because it's very hard to concentrate on developing and advancing a story when you have a lot of main characters competing for screen time.
Neither Flash nor Hawkgirl was in TEB, for instance. But what would they have added to it? Nothing that I could see. They only would have slowed things down.
I hope we do see more in the way of "pairing up" rather than having a mess of JLers running around. It makes sense to have most of them involved in IBN, where one of their own is in trouble. But mostly I think one or two team members should handle each situation, bringing in additional member(s) as events warrant.
For instance, in TEB why did WW have to be with Superman and GL when the sub was in trouble? Superman was needed for his strength and diplomacy, and GL for his ring. WW was completely redundant. She could have been cut from that part of the ep.
It made sense to have Batman show up when he did. It also made sense for JJ to take part in the deception at the end of pt 1, since they needed someone to play Aquaman. Again, WW was mostly redundant.
I could only see her becoming necessary to the plot of TEB at the end, when they needed to muster as much force as possible to defeat the renegade Atlanteans.
Each member should be used only when they are necessary to the plot or action.

I couldn't put it better myself, Maxie.
But yes... there won't be any characters who will be in ALL the episodes. We'll see duos, trios, and occasionally the whole team.
Just remember... we've only seen three storylines so far!

I think what the show does is play up the concept of the League not as an exclusive club that runs around all together for every situation, but as a kind of "on call" mobile response team.
If there is a situation that requires their attention, then whoever can be mobilized the fastest or is in the most proximity to the disaster, or has a unique talent that could aid them for that situation, then thats who will be there.
and as is often the case in real life emergancy situations not all of those above things are going to fall exactly into place everytime.
They probably could've used Batmans detective skills to unravel the mystery with surrounding Johns supposed crime, but for whatever reason he could not be there.
All these heroes have a 24 job as is protecting their own cities and what not, in addition to being "on call" for the JL.

Oh, that is a great characterization. Puts it perfectly. :)

The only thing I can think is that they decide to leave a few JL members out so other characters can shine. Like the GL Corps and Aquaman & Mera.

I have no problem picking and choosing members for episodes as they are needed, but I do think the writers have an obligation to use the characters they choose in a given episode instead of just focussing on one or two.
For example, in TEB Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter had minimal parts that weren't necessary at all. After seeing Secret Origins and IBN I was disappointed in the character development because what those first two stories did is find a way to develop all the characters in a unique way even if they didn't get much screen time, something that wasn't the case in TEB.
I'm really just hoping for more WW myself. I think they did some cool stuff with her origin and her character in Secret Origins and just dumped her totally. She's an important member of the team and the DC Universe that deserves better treatment in my opinion. So I'm looking forward to more WW soon please!

Yeah I know whats up with that? Batman's the best he should be in all of 'em. I'm sure, if they created that spaceship thing that goes into space, they could modify another model of the Batwing to go into space. He would do alright in "In Blackest Night". I'm glad he was in "The Enemy Below" Part 1.
Below is a pic of how he probably is 'cause he's not in any episodes.

He's not in all of the episodes because he doesn't need to be there every time and he's not a full time member anyway by his own choice.
I'd rather have him there and have a function rather than just put there to service our Batman fix.

As stated previously, i totally agree with Maxie and the "on call" reference, we would get no character development with all of these characters, and each superhero has their own domains to worry about.
