View Full Version : Anyone egerly waiting, War of the Worlds?
Clown Prince says that War of the Worlds will have a more human twist on the invasion, and how people react to it,,,It could be a great film..Of course, the destruction and the war will be fantastic...Anyone else looking forward to it? I am. The first one really had great effects for l953. George Pal, ..Don't count Spielberg out, he really made GCI work with Jurasic Park..Stu

It could be great, but honestly, I'm not getting my hopes up. I've seen three different trailers for this movie and, except for one half-second shot of a tripod, I have seen nothing that remotely resembles anything that H.G.Wells wrote. That doesn't necessarily mean the movie will be bad (Orson Welles' infamous radio play took a lot of liberties with the source material, too), but Speilberg's track record of adapting works of science fiction literature has not been good (A.I., Minority Report).

I can't really see how they colud make the story more "down to Earth". All three previous productions as well as the book were like that.

WAR OF THE WORLDS is one of the few movies I'm eagerly anticipating this year. As much as I hated MINORITY REPORT, I love the idea of a Spielberg/Cruise team-up, so I'm looking forward to it, as well as finally seeing the tripod machines on the big-screen.
Heck, it can't be worse than INDEPENDENCE DAY. :D

To be honest, I might be willing to take BATTLEFIELD EARTH over INDEPENDENCE DAY. Seriously. :)

What's wrong with Minority Report? I thought it was great. Hopefully this one will be too. They should pay CNN to run panicked stories on an alien invasion on opening day.

Well, other than the opening sequence and "Anderton's Great Escape," I was just really disappointed with MINORITY REPORT. It was the first Spielberg movie I'd seen since HOOK that I walked away saying to myself, "Well, that sucked."

Looking forward to it but very curious as to what the ships are going to look like, the old movie is one of my all time favorites.
Does anyone remember that old War of the Worlds TV show that ran in the early 90's?
I'm very eager to see this, another thing is that it looks like Saving Private Ryan with a bunch of aliens. Looking foward to June 29.

I agree with Dresslar on this one..Minority Report was an excellent film..It took on a subject, I had never seen before, and pulled it off.(with a lot of suspence and deep meaning too)..While it was slow at times., it was clearly a lot better than a lot of the other films out there, and I might add, who would have the nerve to even try to deal with a subject like that? There are very few studios, or directors, who would even attempt that project, it wouldn't even get green lighted for pre-preduction work..If you felt uneasy at the end of that film, well, you were supposed to...That is part of of the director was saying..

I'd prefer a more 'classic' take on the book. From all I've seen, it looks more like they're taking some general ideas from the original and that's it. Although, if the war machines look neat, I'll probably go see it. I dont think they'll replace the first movies version of the war machine in my hear though. That was a very nice design, sleek and deadly. And I loved the swan neck turret.

I would have also have prefered a more faithful film set in the Victorian era, but oh well. There is an independent movie version of WAR OF THE WORLDS by Pendragon Films that keeps the original setting and is more faithful to the book. However, I saw the trailer on their website, and everything about the film looked really really bad.

I think adding the little girl will ruin any creepy atmosphere they're trying to get at, it would totally ruin the death of the curate(that is, if they decided to keep him in, because now it's in America). But I'll still see it anyway, but my expectation aren't high at all.

Yeah, the anticpation is high... but too high really because both my parents and my friend want to see it with me... its a moral dilema :ack:

I'm up in the air on this one. Tom Cruise doesn't entice me to see this at all, and just because Spielberg is attached, that doesn't mean it'll automatically be awesome. I'm waiting for the reviews, personally.
It COULD be good, and if that's the case, I'll likely see it - but it's not on my "must see" list at this point.
Actually, only two movies this summer were in that category - one's already come out and one will in...*CHECKS CALENDAR*...one week!

Wow, if you thought Minority Report was predictable you must have me beat by several dozen IQ points. When I saw the film I had all sorts of questions about how the story got from A to B to C, particularly regarding its mysterious conclusion.
A.I. I agree was inconsistent, mixing traditional heartwarming Spielberg moments into hard, bleak sci-fi.

Er, what? Did they they run some sort of hoax story about Contact?

I want to see this movie since I like Steven Spielburg. But I probably wont be able to see it until it comes out on video since my friend thinks it looks too scary and does not like Tom Cruise. And my mom just does not like that kind of movie and I really don't want to go alone for this one. I think I would have a much more fun time seeing this movie with friends. So I'll just anticipate the video release.

It had its good moments, like Samantha Morton's performance, but it has no real resemblance to its source material and turns an interesting concept into a fairly pedestrian whodunit (for anybody who has studied Speilberg's work and knows his attitude toward authority figures, the identity of the film's real villian was pretty obvious almost from the beginning).

I also didn't have any problem following the story. I thought the narrative was pretty average, though I didn't mind that. I agree, the conclusion was a little perplexing, which only hindered my experience of the film even more. Ultimately, I just found the movie boring and very subpar for a Spielberg movie.

I think it had something to do with the use of their logo in CONTACT in conjunction with the President Clinton video footage that was altered to fit the events in the film. It was the last movie to be allowed to use the actually CNN logo, which is why you sometimes see generic news logos now like GNN and ZNN.

Yeah that is what I was talking about. I think after that there was some sort of back lash and CNN decided not to allow their name or anchors to appear in movies. If I'm wrong please let me know.

That's not what I was suggesting though. I meant that the studio could buy some time on CNN (or MSNBC, Fox News, whatever) and have the anchor run purportedly real news stories about an alien invasion using brief clips from the film and real news footage of fires, etc.

Uh...no, that's barely even begun production, so I doubt it'll be out this summer. It would put an amazing strain on the animator's wrist. :p

No, I mean in the middle of CNN's regular 6 o'clock newscast the announcer would suddenly say something like, "We've just gotten word that an alien invasion fleet has landed in New Jersey. (Cue a mix of War of the Worlds and stock news footage)They've been destroying everything in their path and the death toll is staggering. Residents are urged take any firearms they own and make their way to the nearest military base. We now take you live to Newark..."
You know, just like Orson Welles did back in the day.

I noticed in the commercial for the War of the worlds they showed no scenes of pics of the aliens, just explosions and some ships. I beleive they are building up to the actual appearance of the aliens and what they look like. If you ask me its working cause i just gotta see what look like now!
