Here's another post about a recent murder that just happened. Anyone hear the Queen Washington story yet?

A 9 year old girl stabs her 11 year old best friend in the chest with a kitchen knife all because they are fighting over a stupid ball. That's just terrible.......................

Should we have a "tragic news story" thread? One place where all the 'young person is killed' or 'young person kills someone' stories go?
And that could also be the place for 'What is the world coming to?' comments.

I'd like to see a scientific study on the rates of murders of children, and murders committed by children comparing now to say 50 years ago. Is the world really going down the tubes, or are some of us just now realizing how nasty it can be?

General rule of thumb I learned in Criminology is that the more uncommon a crime is, the more media exposure it will get. Traffic violations? Ehh. Robbery and shoplifting? Expensive to employers, but still pretty common. Rape (particularly in poor urban neighborhoods and even college campuses)? Sadly, it doesn't get that much media attention, unless there was something exceptional about the situation (IE Serial rapist or the victim was a virtuous, straight-A student).

Homicide? Oh man. Child kills child? Whoa nelly, stop the presses!

"She was a little thug," neighbor Diva McPhatter told the Daily News. "I always asked her to behave, but she was rude. She fought all the time. She was out of control. I'd confront her, but she'd just roll her eyes." Of course nothing is included about WHY the 9 year-old behaved as she did. No family interviews or investigations into neglect by the parents. Where is the info that really matters?

I sure don't know. But,
veriables would be, population, vs media coverage, vs, percentage of poulation to children...It would not be easy to find out even for a seasond research person...Also, since there is so much more Media competition now as compared to l955, in every area except one, (number of daily newspapers) and percentage of peple reading a newspaper), it would be most difficult to discover the real truth in question...There might actually have been more violence l00 years ago,(proportionally) then today. Because of lack of police, lack of media, besides newspapers, lack of sources, lack of reporting the death of the poor. ..One of the greatest mass murders in history took place during the l893 world's fair period..The guy stuffed bodies in the walls of his house...I think they counted over l00. I'll bet no one here has even heard of it...so finding out child murders 50 years ago would be easier, but still very difficult..
