Who watched The Daily Show tonight? The interview with the "Rev. Al Sharptan" had ot be the best interview on the show since the infamous "Spice Girls" interview where everything went wrong. Comments?

Let's just say that even thought Sharpten didn't show up, they proceeded with the interview. I can't really say anything else without ruining it.

We can't? Dang it. Can I say in a spoiler?
Correction: Can someone else say it in a spoiler? It was really funny!

What was the deal? Was Sharpton "too good" to show up for a cable news show, or did he actually have something else to do? I'm going for choice A.....

We don't know why he didn't show. There was no reason given why he didn't show up. It sounds like Sharpton didn't even have the class to call them to come up with an excuse. Jon Stewart said that when they called Sharpton's phone, they got no answer. I think they got back at him, though.

I'm thinking "A", too. Now I gota post this next thing in a spoiler. After the rerun of the episode tonite as 6, all spoilers are off!
I thought it was hilarious they got Stephen to step in as the Rev. The review was hilarious. The "purple stuff" comment had me floored!

--actually a called and ordained servant of the Word, is my query. I've never seen the man in a collar, and I don't know too many preachers who take to the pulpit in a jogging suit. David Alan Grier did a great take on Sharpton in his In Living Color days...right up there with costar Damon Wayans' Louis Farrakhan. Normally I don't watch TDS much (Jon Stewart irks me), but this one I've got to see for myself....

mainly because I was getting too much irony in my diet and because I was getting the idea of Jon Stewart and crew's sentiments being "Hey, so what if thousands of people died on September 11th and the world changed forever? Let's joke and make like it never happenned. God Bless the terrorists and God (bleep) America!". They probably think that, but not me. I'm supportive of America, and they're not...
I might have to tune in for this "Al Sharpton" interview, though.
Sincerely,
John "Captain Caps" Kilduff
Do you think I was too harsh in my criticism of the show?

Yeah, I don't watch TDS either. I used to watch it regularly back when Kilbourne (sp?) used to host, but after he left and JS took over, i just lost interest in it.

I don't think it's really so much like that. A terrible calamity just happened, we mourned for so many people...yet if we live like that day in, day out, what are we supposed to accomplish? (getting into a large sentimental monologue right here) Yes, we mourn. Yes, we're sad. But that doesn't change what happened. I agree that it's terrible to laugh about the nation, to laugh at the towers falling, but we can laugh at other things (like the Graybar Hotel, if that's what kids call it these days. ;) ). What should we do? Sit inside all day and mourn? We can't. It is physically impossible. Best to laugh and keep our spirits up, because if we don't what can we accomplish?
Finis. If this was off-topic...well, listen to it anyway! I'm not letting something like that go to waste!
Unless I can recycle it...Or perhaps I can send it down the human garbage disposal. :wakko: (I love these smilies!)

Danielle, that statement was lovely, but I don't agree. I prefer depression and anger myself. This world isn't funny, unless you like black humor. I can't be happy and laugh at depressing things at the same time. We accomplished a lot with anger and sadness. Our country was built on it, for God's sake. Sorry, but it's always been difficult for me to laugh.
So, you're saying: Laugh at the sadness. If you don't, you're a lazy bum. Am I getting it right?
Sincerely,

Do you know how depressing everything would be without comedy? I can't picture a word without comedy or satire. It's th eholiday season - everyone shopuld be happy and laughing, not all dark and depressed. I am glad, personally, that shows like THE DAILY SHOW and JAY LENO, etc, are back and running. That comedy shows are in full force.
Yes, a really terrible event happened, but terrible things happen everyday. What makes the human race to exceptional is that there are people who can always work past it, and recover. Granted, there are really evil people, but there are great people that greatly outweight the bad.
Yes, life probably sucks - which is why you need laughter to poke fun at it.
Anyways - back on topic - who watched the rerun of the Daily Show?

Yeah, I caught it. I think they knew he wasn't going to show up, so they made the best of the situation and poked a little fun at him. Good work, TDS crew!!!
God Bless America! God Bless a sense of humor as well!!!

I saw it today and thought it was one of the best shows in a long time. From that segment about that monster, to the "retro" footage (WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?!?!!!! I laughed myself sore!) to the way they put it all together for the interview...it was an awesome show all around.
Just a comment...I don't think for one moment this show trivializes what happened on 9-11. I think John Stewart is as torn up about it as anybody else in this country. The show must go on, and I am glad the Daily Show is still there to help me find some humor with all this crap with Bin Laden. Why bust the Daily Show for their comic relief? Many people are offering great comic relief at Bin Laden's expense. I don't think to do so shows disrepsect to the victims of 9-11.

Best. Interview. Ever. Even better than the full hour I saw Joan Rivers devote to interviewing Sam Kinison and he didn't show. Thought I was going to die when they started in on the fake fruit drinks.
TDS, like all the New York comedy shows, came back on with a from-the-heart talk about how they really didn't feel like trying to be funny, but this was what Giuliani had requested and it would be part of the healing process. The only part I recall was the opening: "My apartment used to have a view of the World Trade Center. Now it looks out on the Statue of Liberty." These past three months would have been a lot more unbearable without flashes of humor. The body takes depression only so long before it'll force a change.
