I look around the thing, and don't find a battery compartment... but the date never saves anymore.

The Saturn had one; does the Dreamcast?

I believe you can save the date and time to the VMU as well.

Here's a guide (http://devcast.dcemulation.com/mods/batteryreplace/battery.php) to replacing the battery. Perform at own risk.

Depends...have you left your DC plugged in all the time, or is this the first time it's been plugged in for awhile? See, the DC trickle-charges the internal battery while the system's not in use.

Either way, though, your battery's probably screwed.:shrug:
