Hey everyone. Like Ive said before, Im new to anime, but I have a question for all the anime fans on this board. This doesnt apply to all of you, or even all anime fans, but there are many shows I like and would be interested in collecting on DVD and so Ive scoped out some anime on Amazon.com. Since Ive been watching the reruns of Fullmetal Alchemist (I like it so far :D ), for example, I searched for those DVDs. They were $23 or so a pop, I think and had like 4 episodes I think. Now, my question is, what do most of anime fans do? I mean, that seems pretty steep. Do the prices eventually go down? Do most of you just avoid buying the DVDs or do you suck it up and dish out the cash? I mean, heck, I could be off base here, but they seem pretty expensive to me. FMA is supposed to be 51 episodes I think I heard, so that breaks down to 13 DVDs by my math and at $23 each, that's $300. Wow. Are significantly cheaper season/"box" collections usually made available? What's the general consensus on this, since Im out of the loop? Thanks again everybody

Are significantly cheaper season/"box" collections usually made available?Yeah, they're usually about half the price of buying the volumes individually, and thus are my way to buy anime. The box to keep all the volumes in is cool too.:D

I've been able to find my anime DVDs for $20 instead of the usual $30. If you want to wait for a box set you'll save money though. I wouldn't complain about anime DVD prices. In Japan, most anime DVDs contain 2 episodes and cost $35-$40.

I would suggest you check out DeepdiscountDVD.com and Amazon.com for LEGITMATE domestic anime DVDs for a good price. Beware Ebay unless you know exactly what you are looking for because most of the anime on it is pirated.

Yes yes, do NOT go to any site that has the slightest chance of selling bootlegs, because bootlegs are what you will find. Stick with the big guys and with certain anime sites (like animenation.com) that have a specific non-bootleg policy. Do not use eBay or half.com or similar sites, or at least be really really careful if you do.

For the less "wired" options, Best Buy is probably the... best buy. For example, you can usually get Yu Yu Hakusho boxes there for about $60, which is about as low as they'll get. (Those are 6 or 7 discs each, so that's really cheap.)

The other option if you just want to watch anime rather than keep it is the mail-order DVD rental services like Netflix. For under $20 a month, you can take out up to 3 DVDs at a time, return them and get 3 more. Netflix has a very broad array of recent titles and the classics, too. You order your movies online and they mail them to you. Netflix has local depots around the country so turnaround time is 3-4 days. There are other services that have anime only, but I've used Netflix because they also have other movie categories. If you space out your viewing, you can have a new DVD in your mailbox practically every day. (^_*)

I also endorse Netflix. They have a solid selection and are much cheaper than buying, especially for longer series.

For me, I go the most expensive route. I buy the series I want as soon as they come out and I'll buy the Vol. 1 w/box when it's avalible. I don't buy every series released or anything, but the series I collect, I collect completely. At the moment, I'm buying FMA, Gantz, Chrono Crusade, Gunslinger Girl, and just finished MS Gundam SEED.
