Umm... I THINK there's a topic lurking in that thing somewhere...
Anyway, I've been working my way through the Spanish dubs of Mazinger Z. It's an excruciating experience, to be honest. For all the hype, this show is really bad... too bad I have to watch it for part of my thesis.

I remember watching one Super Robot series that I can't remember it's name. I do remember tht it the main charecters could combine their robots into one larger one. They could also become part of a larger robot by docking their robots with it.
I remember the scene in which one guy gets kidnapped, then uses his suit case to self-Destruct and destroy a building I think his son gets involved with a group of guys who pilot Robots. they get attacked by what is discribed as "flying Bannas" in the Dialouge. They then almost get attacked by a big bad robot, get ssaved by little boyt, enter the large robot, beat the bad guy, and then go to a ship and disappear.
Can anyone tell me which series this could be from?

What? Sure it's cheesy, but it's not half bad. Remember it was made in 1972.

I'd like to help, but I need a little more detail. What did the robots look like, and how old is the show? There are so many series like that. It could be Combattler V.

I suggest you look on this AWESOME Italian super robot anime site:Encirobot (www.encirobot.com ). It's got everything.

Well, I can't remember too much detail of it:
-I remember that the team had a blonde girl
-That they were also talking to another group of Mecha pilots in a strange purple place, floating around
-It was dubbed in english
-The Show was on tape, and the last time I saw it was arround 1987.
Thanks Desslar. That Robot looks fimilar. Maybe that could be the series I saw.
Thats what else I can remember. Thanks for your help guys.

Was that English?A most excellent question.
What? Sure it's cheesy, but it's not half bad. Remember it was made in 1972.
Formulaic to the max. Pretty much every episode:
1) Dr. Hell and Ashura (and then Brocken and/or Gorgon) hatch evil plot involving new machine-beast.
2) Comic antics with Kouji, Sayaka, Boss, and Shiro OR Kouji and Sayaka get in a fight.
3) Machine-beast shows up and trashes town/threatens lab, etc.
4) Sayaka runs out and gets enemy's attention.
5) Enemy attacks, Sayaka screams and tries to run away but ends up getting trashed.
6) Kouji launches in Mazinger Z and destroys machine-beast.
Lather, rinse, and repeat. Ninety-two times. With a couple of exceptions.
I'm in hell.

The first thing I thought was Combattler V as well, but I'm pretty sure Chizuru had blue hair. Nia was blonde, but she was one of the enemies.
Er... other combining-robot series... Voltron? Dancougar? Mighty Orbots?:gir:
Edit: Most of my contact with the classic supers comes from the SRW games... I really need to see a couple of these others.

OK, but almost all the classic super robot series are very formulaic. The question is does it stand out or just look like all the others? I think it is rather distinctive.

Just look at those villains. That's pretty creepy stuff for a kids' cartoon. I mean, it had friggin' Nazis!

Nah. Generally I despise ridiculously weak and/or silly female characters. All my feminist English profs may be rubbing off on me...
And Nazis are the easiest villains ever. I swear, In the realm of science fiction neo-Nazis have tried EVERYTHING.
Still, I had to admit it was pretty funny in the second episode when they read Professor Kabuto's story about how Dr. Hell got his army of robots... I mean, really. Here's this guy who's about eight feet tall, with purple skin and a huge white beard, NAMED DR. HELL... and nobody finds this at all strange? That was high comedy.
I mean, it does have that "classic" status... but it doesn't stand up terribly well on its own.
Actually, apart from Getter Robo the other series that I really need to check out for this paper are Raideen and Daitarn 3, so that I can see how Tomino's style for them compares to his work on Gundam.

Forget about the character. That has to be the coolest female robot ever.

But how many kids' cartoons would dare to use them? I don't think they ever showed up on Transformers, Gobots, Orbots, etc.

I recommend Danguard Ace, since the story is by Leiji Matsumoto (Yamato, Harlock).

Watched some old Voltron episodes the other day. Classic.
And yes this topic makes little to no sense.

This topic is like the world. It only makes sense when you force it to.
Speaking of which, has anyone seen Dancougar? That's another one that looks sorta interesting.

I'm looking forward to seeing the unedited version of Gatchaman
I saw G-Force and BOTP before so this will be interesting. It will probably be in comparison to Southern Cross/ Masters Saga and Mospeada/new generation.
all of which I have seen...

I thought it was boring. It had typical 80s designs, and I felt that 80s designs were better suited to "realistic" robot shows. Dancouger was a super-robot show, and it needed more stylized, streamlined design work.

Doesn't the Dancougar robot have a lion's head or something?

Maybe it was a cougar head?
Rubberchicken, since you don't like Mazinger Z, let me tell you this: it was done by Go Nagai, and it was done in the 70's. Add those two, you get pure cheese. Go Nagai likes to do plenty of silly things in his anime.
I like Go Nagai's style and I'm a huge sucker for cheesy 60's and 70's anime. I've seen a couple of fansubbed episodes of Cutey Honey. Yeah, the animation style was severely dated but it was pure campy fun! :)
I'm hoping that ADV will finally green light the distribution of Mazinger Z as they are sitting on that property but are not openly declaring it yet. Maybe they want to finish with Gatchaman first before going into another classic anime.

I love old school anime. I wish I owned more, right now I only own Cutie Honey, which I love so much. I really wanna see Mako, The Little Mermaid, and Majokko Megu-Chan. Too bad the boxsets are out of print, I'm still waiting for Toei to release singles.

There really in'st any proof of them having the rights. If anything they own the dub rights to Tranzor Z (like with Sailor Moon, and Battle of Planets) and can't release a sub version yet.

Oh, I know. That doesn't mean I like it, nor does it make it less repetitive.
But anyway.
Dancougar has a human face. It splits up into four smaller pieces, each of which has a vehicle form, a humanoid form, and an animal form. One of them (Sara's, I think...) does turn into some kind of feline.

I'd kill to see half of the stuff that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel again; most specifically Green Legend Ran, Galaxy Express 999, and Robot Carnival.

Yeah, Dancougar was pretty much a more dramatic animated version of Power Rangers. All the robots were animals, they combine and they fight evil aliens. The whole series is out on VHS from one of Central Park Media's companies.

If it was dubbed, that narrows it down a bit. Try looking into the shows in a block of animation called Force Five.

Both series had Blonde Females
Both had mecha on both sides
Both alien races in the series were featured backgrounds with alot of purple in it

Does anyone remember the Saturday Morning anime block that Sci-Fi had?
I was so young I don't remember the names of any of the shows they showed, I think it was mostly movies anyway.
There was one about Vampires or something and one of the guys had a hand that sucked in or shot out wind and when it got cut off his arm it talked..
The other one reminded me alot of Megaman in a way. The main character was a cyborg or something of the sort with a blaster and had a robotic dog(rushesque)
I never understood these back then mostly cause it was too early in the morning or the fact that I was 6 or 7.

Incredibly early Saturday morning, yes. The vampire movie you speak of is Vampire Hunter D.
Sci-fi's block was actually where I had my first real contact with anime (the first regular contact wouldn't come until half a year later when I discovered the "wonders" of DBZ). I saw part of Iria: Zeiram the animation on the block - then my parents got suspicious and came downstairs to see if I was watching porn. Go figure.
Grabbed the CPM Iria DVD the moment I saw it. It's still one of my favorites.
